Chapter 37: Did You Ever Truly Love Me?

Yvonne did not actually faint, she was just faking it. Since things had gone this far, she had no better solution besides feigning unconsciousness. She thought that Michael would immediately send her to the hospital after seeing her taint.

Indeed, she heard Michael instruct Mr. York, "Send Yvonne to the hospital."

With that, Michael grabbed Wendy’s hand and pulled her toward the elevator. As he walked, his cold voice rang out, "Everyone in the lobby right now will incur consequences for being late." ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

MC Enterprise treated late arrivals very sternly. An employee’s entire bonus for that month would be canceled if they were late just once.

The employees in the lobby never expected that this would happen to them. However, they did not dare to resist Michael’s decision.

Christian’s smile grew more meaningful as he watched Michael’s recede from his view as he walked away. Then, he entered the other elevator.

The first elevator quickly arrived at the story of the president’s office. Michael did not release his grip on Wendy. Wendy felt pain in her wrist.

In a low voice, she screeched, "Michael Lucas, let go of me right now"

"Let go of you?" Michael threw Wendy onto the couch and sneered, "Do you want me to let go of you so you can go to Christian?"

"Michael, you are a lunatic!" Wendy wanted to get up from the couch, but Michael ended up dragging her back again.

This time, he did not release his grip on Wendy. Instead, he pinned her down with his body. His breath fanned across her face as he said, "Do you want to divorce me that badly? You won’t even leave room for discussion in front of so many employees? Wendy Stewart, have you ever thought about what would happen if Christian doesn’t want you after our divorce?"

Wendy was not pushing for the divorce so that she could get together with Christian. Whether their divorce went through or not, she would never be with Christian. However, Wendy did not wish to explain herself. After all, Michael would not believe her anyway. Right now, Michael stubbornly believed that Wendy wanted to get a divorce just because of Christian.

This was just like three years ago when he believed that she was the one who had drugged him.

Observing Wendy’s silence, Michael grew even more enraged, "Let me tell you, Wendy Stewart: you forced me into this marriage, so I’m the only one who can decide to get divorced."

"If that’s the case, Mr. Lucas, please enlighten me-what exactly must I do to get you to agree?" asked Wendy calmly. There was a cold smile playing on her lips.

Michael saw her expression and felt it was mocking him. He grabbed her chin and forced her to meet his gaze. He said, "Thať’s not going to happen no matter what."

"Don’t you love your precious Yvonne anymore? Don’t you want to give her an official status?" Wendy questioned him.

Regarding Yvonne, it was true that Michael did not love her anymore. In fact, he was starting to feel like he never did. In the past, all he did was indulge her, spoil her, and accommodate her.

After all, he felt like he owed it to Yvonne to do so. Even more than that, since he hated Wendy, he often made use of Yvonne to anger her. He used to think of Yvonne as a kind and lovely person. But when he thought about how she had behaved in the lobby earlier, he felt extremely unfamiliar and disgusted. Of course, Michael would never tell Wendy this.

"What’s so important about having an official status?" said Michael, "You’ve been Mrs. Lucas for the past three years, but have you gotten anything out of it? I want to keep you by my side and let you see how I treat the woman that I love."

"Do you think that I still care?" Even though Wendy felt extreme pain in her chin, she did not cry out. She said, "Michael, I don’t love you anymore, so I don’t care who you’re in love with. If you really don’t want to get divorced, then so be it. I don’t care."

Wendy had made up her mind to leave Lake City; just one more month. When that happened, she would make sure that even Michael could not find her. Hence, whether they got divorced or not was of little significance.

Wendy did not plan on getting married again in the future. She just wanted to have her baby and raise them well. As for something as naive as love’, she would never subject herself to it again.

Michael looked into Wendy’s eyes and saw determination, firmness, and seriousness. The only thing that was missing was the ardent love she had for him in the past. In an instant, Michael eased the force of his grip.

He thought, does Wendy really not love me anymore?

He could not believe it. How could a woman who had loved him for three years suddenly fall out of love?

"Wendy Stewart, did you ever truly love me?" asked Michael. In the past, he never cared about whether Wendy genuinely loved him. However, he found himself feeling slightly afraid to hear her answer. He was scared that she would say no, but he was also scared that she would say yes.

Before Wendy could reply, Michael covered her mouth with his hand. He shook his head, and with a smile on his face, said, "Forget it, don’t answer that question."

Michael’s present behavior made him appear like a complete lunatic in Wendy’s eyes. She shoved Michael aside forcefully. Feeling afraid that he would do something to hurt her baby in his rage, Wendy quickly stood up and ran out of the office. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ

She ran all the way back to the vice-president’s office downstairs. The moment she entered the room, she saw Christian on the phone.

"Don’t thank me, grandmother, this is what should do..."

When Wendy heard those words, her fluctuating emotions reached a peak. She thought, is he talking to grandmother on the phone? What business do they have between them? And didn’t he just return from abroad? When did he grow so close to his grandmother?

When Christian spotted Wendy’s entrance, panic flashed in his eyes. But he quickly feigned nonchalance and continued speaking, "Like I told you, there is no need to thank me, I didn’t do much. Why don’t you go ahead and get busy, there’s someone waiting to see me."

With that, he quickly hung up.

Frowning, Wendy asked him suspiciously, "Who were you talking to on the phone?"

Wendy now felt a little uncertain about whether Christian had been talking to Madam Lucas on the phone. Even though she had heard him address the recipient as "grandmother", she might have been mistaken about it.

"Just a friend from abroad," said Christian without explaining too much. Since it was a lie, he thought he should keep it simple. Otherwise, he might get exposed easily.

"A friend?" Wendy asked, "I thought I heard you addressing them as your grandmother."

"You must have heard wrong," replied Christian without changing his expression, "He’s around the same age as me, so there’s no way I would do that."

Wendy did not know if she should believe Christian’s explanation, but judging from his disposition, he did not appear to be lying. Yet, Wendy knew very well what kind of person Christian really was. Hence, she did not believe him immediately.

"Mr. Lucas, there’s something that I’ve always wanted to ask you."

"Go ahead, Wendy, I’ll tell you all that I know," replied Christian as he remained seated on a chair and took a sip of his water. He looked very calm.

"What exactly did you tell grandmother in private when we were at the mansion that day?" Wendy had not asked about this before

"What exactly did you tell Grandmother in private when we were at the mansion that day? Wendy had not asked about this before because she felt that Christian would not tell her the truth. But now, she did not even know if he was speaking on the phone with Mrs. Lucas. Something just felt strange.

"I didn’t say anything much, I just told her about your situation in the company. I never expected her to dote on you so much. When she heard how Michael has been mistreating you and docking your pay, she felt heartbroken for you" Christian was telling the truth, just an incomplete version of it.

"That’s all?" Wendy did not believe that things were as simple as he claimed.

Indeed, Grandmother did dote on her very much, but she cared more about the family’s reputation. Wendy thought, Grandmother had summoned us back in a rage that day, how was

Is it possible for Christian to resolve the matter so easily?

Wendy awaited his response with suspicion. She felt that Christian would not tell her the truth. But now, she did not even know if he was speaking on the phone with Madam Lucas. Something just felt strange.

Christian’s smile deepened when he looked into Wendy’s disbelieving eyes. "Wendy, it’s better for women to not be so smart," he said.

Knowing that Wendy would not easily be placated with perfunctory responses, and since he had nothing else to tell her, he decided to stop coming up with excuses. Instead, Christian simply said, "A woman should be more simple-minded if she wants to lead a happy life."

Wendy could not comment any further on what Michael had said. She also knew that even if she pursued the topic further, Christian would not reveal anything else.

The truth behind Christian’s secrecy was not for Wendy’s sake. He was afraid that Wendy would betray him and tell Michael about it.

"Let me know if you have work for me to do. If there’s nothing for now, I’ll leave your office for now," said Wendy. With that, she turned around and entered her own office next door.
