Chapter 333: Was I Indebted To You In My Previous Life

"Who knows if it’s really personally handwritten." Jake spoke with a cold tone. He lowered his head and looked at the notebook in his hand. After a moment, he returned the notebook to Wendy.

"I can recognize your daddy’s handwriting," Wendy said with a sigh. "This is indeed handwritten by him."

Jake also knew Michael’s handwriting. However, Jake was still hateful towards him. His feelings made it impossible to rationally understand the situation.

If they were in the past when their family of four was happy and prosperous, Jake would have felt that this was the best present. But it was a shame that was not the case. freewebnovёl.ƈom

"So what if it was." Jake lifted his head and looked at Wendy doubtfully. He asked, "Mommy, could you have forgiven him? You know even better than me what he has done. Mommy, you’re a person who doesn’t tolerate betrayal. How could you tolerate him betraying you twice?"

"Jake? What are you guys talking about?" Leah Stewart still had a smile on her face and the present in her arms.

Wendy lowered her head slightly as she spoke to Leah. "Leah, you go shower and sleep first. Daddy has recorded a bedtime story for you. You can play it and listen to it before you sleep." Leah nodded and very obediently left.

The moment Leah left, Wendy pulled Jake along and walked to the sofa. Once they sat, she turned her head and looked at her son. "Jake, I know you’re standing up for mommy, but mommy doesn’t need it," she said sincerely. "Mommy hopes that you and Leah grow up happily, and do grow up full of vengefulness. Leah is still young and she doesn’t know many things. You, as her big brother, know much more than her. Don’t mention these bad things about him in front of her. You don’t wish for Leah to be like how she was in the past when she didn’t smile."

Hearing Wendy’s words, Jake lowered his head slightly, feeling guilty. "Sorry mommy, I wasn’t aware of myself just now."

Jake was too angry. Leah did not know anything and she had nothing to be concerned about. Furthermore, she was so close to Michael. Now, even Wendy was personally sending Michael to the airport. Michael was clearly the one who had betrayed Wendy, but it seemed as if Wendy and Leah had forgiven him. This made Jake very confused.

Wendy reached out and caressed Jake’s little head. "Mommy doesn’t want you to feel guilty," she said with a sigh. "And mommy also hopes that you won’t be too judgmental towards Michael."

"This isn’t judgement. It’s the plain truth." Jake shook his head. "He and that woman even have a child and they’ll be engaged in half a month. Mommy, just what are you thinking? Could you really have forgiven him?"

Wendy shook her head. "I don’t know myself. I don’t know if I should forgive him. I don’t even fully understand what is really going on."

"What do you mean, mommy?" Jake was intelligent. Hearing this, he knew that something felt off.

Wendy initially did not want to say too much to Jake. But seeing that Jake had so much hate for Michael, Wendy decided to tell him.

"Michael told me something. He asked me to wait half a year for him." Wendy pinched her lips as she spoke. "Yesterday at the birthday party, he told me that. He specially emphasized this today before he left as well. I feel weird like he’s hiding something from me."

"Half a year?" Jake whispered. "Why do you need to wait half a year for him? What is he doing? Or is he forcing us to leave Lake City?"

Wendy shook her head. "I don’t know. That’s all he said. He didn’t say anything else."

"He said nothing else, and you just believed him?" Jake reached his little hand over to hold Wendy’s bigger hand. "Mommy, no matter what he says, what happened between him and Yonina is the truth. Even if you’re swayed and don’t hate him, can you still accept what happened between them? Furthermore, Yonina is already pregnant. How could you and he go back to what you were before?"

"We can’t," Wendy smiled impatiently as she had already clearly explained herself. "But this matter is ultimately a little strange. I’m only telling you these things only in the hopes that you won’t be full of vengefulness and hatred in your heart. I’m not asking you to do something about it. You’re so young. You shouldn’t carry the weight of adult matters. You and Leah just have to grow up happily. No matter what happens to Michael and I next time, we’re still your mommy and daddy. This one thing will never change forever. And you have to trust that Michael loves you and Leah."

"I don’t need his love," Jake said coolly.

"It’s not about whether you need it..." Wendy had not finished when, from the corner of her eye, she noticed that the door to the room at the side had opened a little.

It was Zen Tanner’s room. Exposed at the door, was a bit of clothing, indicating Zen’s figure standing beside the door. Wendy furrowed her brows slightly. Was Zen eavesdropping on them?

Wendy was a little suspicious of the reason behind Zen coming to her home in the first place. Could this behavior of her’s now be a coincidence? Noticing that Wendy had looked away, Jake followed her line of sight and looked over as well.

Hearing that the voices that were speaking had gradually softened and had become inaudible at the end, Zen subconsciously walked one step forward. But this step had pushed the door straight open and she was entirely exposed standing at the door.

Zen saw Wendy and Jake and at the moment she did, she saw that they had already been looking at her. Zen became flustered in an instant. She had been caught eavesdropping. Anyone would feel awkward.

Zen laughed out loud and immediately thought of an excuse. "I...well, the water dispenser in the room has run out of water," she said. "I’ve come out to get a cup of water."

Then under Wendy’s gaze, she awkwardly poured a big cup of water and walked back toward her room.

When she entered her room, she said "goodnight" with a smile. This time, the door shut completely.

Wendy and Jake exchanged glances. "Mommy, this Mrs. Tanner is a bit problematic," Jake said softly.

Wendy nodded. The reason for her believing in Michael’s so-called "half a year" was actually partially because of Zen. Zen was working under Christian Lucas, and she had come here due to her pregnancy.

And now, Michael was to be engaged with Yonina Collins.

It seemed like two separate matters on the surface, especially since the two people had no relation. Despite that, Wendy felt that with these two strange situations happening at once, it was very possibly they were not coincidences. They might have some relation that she did not know about. But Michael did not tell her the truth. Wendy did not dare to confirm if what she was thinking was right. Neither did she dare to trust Michael. However, in her heart, she definitely had her suspicions.

"Then why do you still keep her around?" Jake asked.

"I’m afraid that if I don’t let her stay, something could really happen to her," Wendy said. "You just pretend that you don’t know anything."

"Let’s not talk anymore. It’s late. You go shower and sleep too," Wendy said to Jake. He nodded his head and left.

Seeing Jake go to the washroom, Wendy turned and went to the kitchen. She heated up a cup of milk and walked to Zen’s room.

Reaching out, Wendy knocked lightly on the door. "Are you sleeping, Zen?" Wendy asked.

Hearing Wendy’s voice, Zen jumped. At that moment, she had been sending a text message. She immediately put her phone aside, took in a deep breath and answered, "Not yet, but I’m preparing to. What’s up?"

"I’ve brought you hot milk. It’ll be good to sleep after drinking some of it," Wendy said.

Zen immediately got down from her bed to open the door for Wendy. Seeing that Wendy was really holding hot milk, Zen felt awkward and also a little guilty. Zen reached out to receive the milk, but she did not have a chance to say thanks since Wendy did not give it to her.

Instead, Wendy moved to the side and walked past Zen. She placed the milk on the side table beside Zen’s bed. Her gaze looked towards the water dispenser at the side of the room. There was clearly still water in the dispenser which meant that Zen was really lying. Although Wendy had already guessed it, she still felt miserable after checking it out herself.

When Zen saw that Wendy had looked towards the water dispenser, she opened her mouth and wanted to explain herself. But she realized that she did not know how to explain. It was her who had said that there was no water, and now Wendy had discovered that there was water. What could she say then? Explaining was more difficult than saying nothing.

"Sorry, Wendy," Zen lowered her head slightly as she spoke.

"Could you tell me why you’re sorry?" Wendy looked at Zen as she questioned her.

"I lied to you just now. I’m sorry." Zen did not expect Wendy to come in and bring her milk. She thought that the matter would be over just like that.

"You know that I’m not talking about that." Wendy’s tone was a little cold, with a bit of anger. "I’ll only ask once. Since you’re not willing to answer, I won’t ask you anymore."

Finishing, Wendy turned away and walked towards the exit. She had just reached the door when Zen’s voice sounded from behind.

"You probably already guessed it." Zen swallowed as she spoke. "It’s Christian who sent me here, but not everything I’ve said is a lie. If you don’t let me stay, Christian will definitely force me to proceed with the abortion. The only way he will allow me to keep this child is if I think of a way to stay by your side. Wendy, I have no choice. I really can’t lose this child."

"So what does Christian want you by my side for?" Wendy laughed coldly, "To poison me? Kidnap me? Monitor me?"

Zen shook her head. "I don’t know either. He just told me to listen to his instructions. I’ve only been here for a day. As of now, he has not said anything about what he wants me to do." As she said this, Zen had her head lowered. She clearly did not dare to look into Wendy’s eyes.

"What about you then? You intend to do his bidding?" Wendy questioned one after the other.

"I don’t know either." Zen walked a few steps forward and took hold of Wendy’s hand. "But don’t worry, Wendy. I definitely won’t do anything to hurt you. I just want to keep this child. If what Christian wants me to do is against the law, I won’t put the future of me and my child on the line either."

Wendy looked at Zen holding her hand with glistening eyes. She felt very miserable.

Wendy did not know if what Zen was saying now was the truth. But what she could confirm was that her suspicions before were not incorrect. Zen had really come to her place with ulterior motives.

Seeing that Wendy did not speak, Zen felt a bit panicky and tightened her hold on Wendy’s hand. "Wendy, I beg you not to chase me away. If I leave you, Christian will force me to abort my child. Without my child, I wouldn’t be able to continue living either. Wendy, you’re a mother as well. You should be able to understand my reasoning to keep this child with all that I have."

"This is not your first time betraying me for Christian." Wendy withdrew her hand. "Zen, after all these years, is our relationship not worth more than a man? Furthermore, a man who doesn’t love you."

"I’m sorry," Zen lowered her head and tears fell down her face.

"It’s late today, but you need to leave tomorrow," Wendy said coldly.

After speaking, Wendy turned and intended to leave the room. She had just taken one step when she heard a thud from behind. Zen had knelt down.

"Wendy, chasing me away is really like taking my life." Zen knelt on the ground and lifted her head as she looked at Wendy’s silhouette. "At this point, I’m begging you. Save me and my child. I have so much to be apologetic to you for. As long as you can allow me to stay, once I safely give birth to this child, I’ll even give you my life if you want."

"What would I want your life for?" Wendy laughed mockingly. "Once you’ve given birth to your child, you’ll have no life. Do you think I’ll help you raise your child?"

"I..." Zen was stuck for a moment.

"Zen, was I indebted to you in my previous life?" Wendy’s laugh was strained with agony. "In the past, I thought that it was a blessing that I met such a university classmate like you in this life. I didn’t expect that in the end, it would wind up in misfortune."

"Wendy..." Zen was miserable hearing Wendy’s words.

But she knew that what Wendy said was correct. She had no way of rebutting, neither did she have a way to explain herself. She just wanted to keep her child. No matter what, she would do anything to keep her child.

"Wendy, I’m begging you, don’t chase me away. I beg you..." Zen gritted her teeth as she kowtowed, the sound crisp as her head connected to the ground. In an instant, crimson blood spilled out from Zen’s forehead.

Wendy shut her eyes. Ultimately, she had a soft heart. Wendy could understand Zen’s feelings of wanting to protect her child, because she was a mother too. To be able to do come this far, it really could just be for the sake of the child in her womb. It seemed like if she had really chased her away, her child would be lost. In the end, Wendy could not bear the thought of it.

"Stop it!" Wendy gritted her teeth as she said the two words.

"If you don’t let me stay here, I’ll still die even if I don’t beg," Zen’s tone was harsh, as she had long run out of tears to cry.

"I’ll let you stay." Wendy really felt that this was all too funny and shook her head. "I’ve really must have owed you in my previous life."

Hearing that Wendy was allowing her to stay, the weight in Zen’s chest in her heart was quickly lessened.

"Thank you, Wendy," Zen sniffed as she spoke with a smile.

"Go to sleep early," Wendy finished speaking and turned to leave the room.

"Goodnight, Wendy," Zen said to Wendy’s disappearing silhouette.

Since the day before, Zen had been jittery and afraid that Wendy would realize that she had gotten close to her with ulterior motives. Zen did not expect that Wendy would see through her so quickly. However, this had rather made Zen more relaxed. She finally no longer had the need to tirelessly act in front of Wendy.
