Chapter 312: Take Responsibility Where Necessary

When Wendy was outside Michael’s room, she had still harbored some hopeTake Responsibility Where Necessary.

Perhaps everything was a misunderstanding.

Perhaps Michael had reasons for doing what he did.

However, he had insisted it was her who stabbed him when he was the one who had moved toward the knife himself.

Wendy’s eyes were already red and swollen from crying.

She wiped the tears off her face with a sad smile. Her expression as she gazed upon the man opposite her was full of despair and disappointment.

This was a man she had loved at the expense of her life.

Even though she had regained her memories and remembered the past, she was still worried about him. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

At this moment, she felt that everything she had done was in vain.

All the years of effort, all the feelings she had invested in this man had been misplaced.

Michael watched as Wendy turned from him. Hanging by his side, his hands slowly curled into tight fists.

He wanted nothing more than to reach out and pull Wendy back, to explain and ask for her forgiveness.

But he could not.

His fight against Christian was bound to be a bloody one.

He would not let Wendy get implicated.

"Wendy Stewart!" Winnie Quinn shouted as she entered the room. The moment she saw Wendy, her eyes blazed angrily. "Wendy Stewart, why did you try to kill Michael?" she demanded.

Christian had told her yesterday that it was Wendy who had stabbed Michael.

Winnie’s mental state was unstable, and she hated Wendy. It was inevitable that she would pin the blame squarely on Wendy.

Stepping up to Wendy, Winnie grabbed hold of her shoulders and shook her violently. "Why did you try to kill my son? You’re vicious! How can someone as vicious as you exist in this world?"

Wendy suddenly burst out in laughter.

Everyone thought that she was the one who had stabbed Michael.

However, even as she laughed, her tears fell uncontrollably.

Why did she feel so terrible inside?

The feeling of being wrongly accused was excruciatingly painful.

"How can you still laugh?" Winnie questioned Wendy hotly, her eyes wide and accusing. "Why have you come to my son’s room? Have you not given up? Have you come to stab him a few more times because he’s still alive?"

Michael was taken aback by his mother’s response to seeing Wendy.

Quickly grabbing Winnie’s hand, he explained, "Mom, stop it. She just happened to pass by and came in to see me."

"Pass by?" Winnie replied, unconvinced. She shook Michael’s hand off forcefully and continued to scream at Wendy, "I don’t believe that. She must have come to kill you!

Michael, run! Mom will hold her back!"

Michael was already injured and weak. Winnie had used quite a bit of strength getting loose from him, and he ended up losing his balance and falling heavily on the ground.

The fall aggravated his wound and sweat beaded on his forehead from the pain.

As he struggled to get up he gritted out through angrily clenched teeth, "Mom!" Why did his mother return just at that time? Just a little more and Wendy would have left.

"I said, she was just passing by. Let her go!"

"If I let her go, she will hurt you. I cannot let her go, I cannot!" Winnie muttered to herself.

Todd had heard the commotion and returned to the room. He saw Wendy in Winnie’s clutches and immediately tried to pry her hands off Wendy.

As Todd was not injured like Michael was, it was easy for him to get Winnie off Wendy.

It didn’t take him long. After getting Wendy loose, he gave Winnie a shove which sent her sprawling on the ground next to Michael.

Standing protectively next to Wendy, Todd gave the two people on the ground a warning look. "Mr. Lucas, don’t go overboard. Corrine only came by today to talk to you. You shouldn’t get physical!"

It was not Michael’s intention to resort to violence.

All he wanted was to let Wendy leave safely.

Getting off the floor with much difficulty, Michael glanced at Wendy and waved his hand at her and Todd. "Leave."

With a huff, Todd immediately reached for Wendy and pulled her toward the door.

Winnie suddenly noticed the paring knife on the ground. Her anger peaked.

She screamed, "You were really here to kill Michael!"

Eyes red and crazed with anger, Winnie picked herself off the ground and picked up the knife. She charged at Wendy screeching, "I’m going to kill you! I’m going to kill you!"

Desperately, Michael tried to stop his mother but he was injured and weak. He took only one step before he stumbled and fell again.

There was nothing he could do except watch helplessly as Winnie plunged the knife toward Wendy.

"Mum!" shouted Michael, "Stop! Stop it now!"

Lost in her anger, Winnie was not capable of listening to reason.

Wendy heard Winnie screaming and turned around to see her with a knife in her hand and headed straight for her.

She tried to dodge, but it was too late.

Pupils dilating in an instant, Wendy only saw Winnie’s incensed face.

Just as it seemed inevitable that she would get stabbed, she felt a shove from the side.

The next instant, the knife in Winne’s hands plunged into Todd.

Eyes wide, Wendy stared at the knife embedded in Todd’s chest in shock. Blood was slowly welling out of the wound and dripping off the handle.

It was exactly like the day before when Michael had been stabbed.

Dazed, Wendy stared at the knife sticking out of Todd for a long time, Winnie suddenly started laughing again. "I will kill you. I will kill you!" she repeated over and over again.

Wendy finally came to her senses and reached out to support Todd, Her vision was by now blurred by more tears.

Swiping at her tears, she cried, "I’ll send you to the hospital! I’ll send you to the hospital now!"

"We are at the hospital." Todd was weak but still managed to crack a joke.

He didn’t want Wendy to worry too much.

"Right, we are at the hospital..." Wendy’s brain was at the moment like mush, it took a while before she fully registered Todd’s words. When it finally clicked, she cried, "I will call for a doctor now. Wait for me, Todd! I’ll get a doctor!"

Then, she supported Todd to a nearby chair before running out of the room.

Other than Todd, only Michael and Winne were left in the room now.

Michael was injured and afraid that he wouldn’t be able to stop Winnie should she act up again, he called out, "Security! Get in here!"

His security guards, who were standing guard outside the room, heard him and came running in.

They had heard the commotion earlier but their boss had not called for them so they had remained where they were.

Now that Michael had called for them, they hurried in.

"Restrain my mother, don’t let her loose!" he ordered.

The bodyguards did not know the full story, but simply followed Michael’s instructions.

Just then, Yonina returned. She had left to buy some food after she left the room earlier.

When she returned and saw the room in a mess, she was surprised.

Noticing that Todd was injured, she exclaimed, "What happened? I was gone for only a little while!"

If she had known, she would have stayed put outside the door instead of leaving.

However, there was no way she could have known this would happen.

Glancing around, Yonina did not see Wendy. Curiously, she asked, "Where is Wendy?

Had she left?"

She had left Michael and Wendy to talk. If they had fallen out and got into a fight, Michael should have gotten into a tussle with Wendy. How was it that Todd was the one injured instead?

No one answered Yonina’s question.

Neither Michael nor Todd was in the mood to reply to her.

Wendy soon returned with a doctor in tow.

"That’s him. He’s hurt!" Wendy told the doctor anxiously in tears. "Save him, doctor, you must save him!"

Wendy had not expected that Todd would allow himself to be stabbed in her defence.

The doctor immediately examined Todd’s wound before he called for a trolley bed.

A nurse attendant soon came with a bed. As they wheeled Todd to the operating theatre, the doctor turned to reassure Wendy, "Don’t worry, I checked him earlier and it’s just a flesh wound. None of his vital organs were injured therefore he is not in any mortal danger."

Wendy nodded in relief upon hearing that.

Michael, Yonina and Wendy remained outside the operating theatre as they waited anxiously for updates on Todd’s situation.

The atmosphere was grim and the silence scarily deafening.

Michael was the first to break the silence this time.

Inclining his head at Wendy, he tried to explain, "I’m sorry, my mother..."

"Are you going to say that your mother is mentally unstable and she did not do it on purpose?" Wendy scoffed. "Michael, she was going to stab me with that knife. Todd is injured because of me."

"I know..." Michael was unhappy with the situation.

If he could he would have taken the knife in her stead too.

However, he was injured and had trouble getting around. Even if he wanted to, he could not get to her in time to shield her.

When he saw Todd putting himself between Wendy and the knife in his mother’s hands, Michael’s feeling’s were conflicted.

On the one hand, he was glad that Wendy was safe.

On the other hand, he was afraid. Todd had subconsciously shielded Wendy in her time of danger. Wendy would definitely feel beholden to him because of it.

Michael dared not think further.

"So?" Wendy sneered, "Are you trying to make excuses for her?"

"I am not trying to make excuses for her. I will take responsibility where necessary," stated Michael.

"Is that so?" Wendy took out her phone. Flatly, she said, "Since you know that someone has to take responsibility, let’s call the police."

"You can’t call the police!" Yonina interjected the moment she heard Wendy say she wanted to call the police. "Mrs. Lucas is not well. We know she did not mean it. If you call the police and this gets out, it will be terrible. The Lucases are well known in Lake City and their reputation must be protected. There aren’t many people who know about Mrs. Lucas’ illness yet."

"So?" Wendy asked. "Todd got stabbed for nothing?"

From Wendy’s tone of voice, Yonina knew Wendy was not about to back down.

The police had already answered the phone. From the handset in Wendy’s hand, a police officer could be heard saying, " Hello-" Yonina reached out and snatched the phone from Wendy. "I’m sorry, I dialled the wrong number!" she said quickly before hanging up.

She levelled a gaze at Wendy and said apologetically, "You can’t call the police, Wendy. The doctor said earlier that Todd is not seriously injured. Don’t worry, we will be responsible and we will compensate you, but you cannot call the police."

"You... and him..." Wendy lifted a finger and pointed it shakily at Michael and Yonina, "will compensate me?"

Yonina understood Wendy’s unspoken accusation and hesitated for a while before nodding.

Wendy laughed and looked down despondently when she saw Yonina nod her head.

She, Wendy Stewart, had become the outsider.
