Chapter 295: I Will Always Keep My Word

Holding her breath, Wendy blinked as she watched Jill, who was by now standing right behind Timothy, giving her an OK signal. She then started talking again to distract Timothy.

"Come on, it’s just two years," she said. "I promise you that if she has not accomplished anything in two years, I will personally bring her back here. Then, I will take her under my wings and personally teach her everything about designing, mentoring her until she becomes a full-fledged designer. Will that do?"

Now, this was what Timothy had always wanted, that Wendy would personally mentor Jill.

That was also why he had made Jill join her as her personal assistant when Wendy moved to MC.

In fact, during her stint as Wendy’s personal assistant, Jill had toed the line and done well.

She had worked hard at all the tasks assigned to her and was a capable personal assistant.

However, since Wendy’s departure to HG, Jill acted up and did not take her job seriously, often defying Ronald’s orders.

Jill was, by nature, an opinionated and proud person who would not even listen to her own father.

But Wendy was an exception. She would always hear Wendy out and heed her advice.

And right now, Wendy was not standing on Timothy’s side.

It might have helped a little if she were on his side, trying to dissuade Jill from her wild escapade.

"You should think this through very carefully. If you insist on forcing Jill to go with you, I will not keep my promise to mentor her, regardless of how she turns out in the end."

"You are using scare tactics again," Timothy rebutted. Despite being threatened yet again, he did not seem so upset anymore.

Actually, he had sensed that Jill had crept up behind him and was unzipping his backpack.

In fact, he had known from the time he caught sight of her sneaking away from behind Wendy.

He was also aware that Wendy had been talking continuously to distract him.

Timothy sighed to himself.

"No, as I’ve said before, this is not a scare tactic," Wendy countered. "It’s just that I understand where Jill’s coming from."

At that moment, Jill once again gave Wendy an OK sign.

Following that, she waved her travel documents at her and smiled.

In the next instant, Jill moved a short distance away and yelled to Timothy, "Dad, I’ll be off then. Don’t you worry, I will not let you down. In two years, I will definitely be crowned the most popular singer. When that happens, I will come back to see you."

Timothy swung around immediately when he heard Jill’s voice, only to find that she had already moved some distance away from him.

Then, he saw Jill waving goodbye to him, "So long, Dad!"

"That ingrate!" Timothy raged, stomping his feet.

To prevent Timothy from going after Jill, Wendy quickly grabbed his arm and smiled, "Leave her be and stop chasing her. Come with me to send Michael and the kids off."

In fact, Timothy had no intention of going after Jill.

Hearing what Wendy had just said, Timothy simply sighed.

He stood and watched his daughter walking further and further away from him until, eventually, she had disappeared into the airport crowd.

As he watched her melding into the sea of people at the airport, Timothy could not help but feel a little heartache and sadness at her departure.

She was his one and only daughter. He would never have acted out his threats so heartlessly.

It was just that his idea of protecting her, his perfect plan for her, was not what she wanted.

"Come on, Timothy. Let’s go. Their flight’s ready for boarding," Wendy urged him, dragging him along.

"Now that you have successfully freed her, you must not forget what you promised me earlier," Timothy reminded her.

He had never doubted Wendy’s capability. So, if she were to keep her word and be willing to mentor Jill in the future, it would be of some comfort to him.

"Stop fretting. I always keep my promises," Wendy smiled. "However, I have faith in Jill. I know that she will carve out a place for herself as a singer."

...

Wendy and Timothy walked Michael and the kids to the boarding gate where the announcement over the PA system was reminding all passengers to board the plane.

Leah was, as expected, looking teary-eyed. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

And, while Jake did not cry, Wendy could tell that he looked like he did not want to leave her.

Lowering her head, she kissed each child on the cheek and said a little sadly, "Mummy will be back very soon. Meanwhile, be good and don’t skive off school."

"Mummy, you must come back soon, OK?" Leah choked as she wrapped her arms around Wendy’s leg.

"Sure, I promise," Wendy barely managed a smile as she caressed Leah’s head.

Then, she looked at Michael and spread her arms, intending to give him a goodbye hug.

On his part, Michael extended his long arm and pulled Wendy close. Then he lowered his head and kissed her on the lips.

The sudden kiss stunned Wendy.

Eyes wide open, she excessively blushed as she remembered that they were at the airport and their two kids were present as well.

Just when she was about to push him away, Michael released her.

Michael saw the embarrassment written all over her face and felt a surge of sadness at their imminent separation. Deliberately trying to lighten up the mood, he smiled, "Since you’ve already kissed the kids, you should not neglect me."

"But I kissed the kids on their cheeks!" Wendy mumbled softly in protest.

"Oh, are you reminding me that I haven’t kissed you on the cheek?" Michael made it as though he was going to reach out for her again.

To which Wendy immediately reacted by stepping back.

Leah, who had been sobbing, saw her Mummy and Daddy kissing and smiled suddenly.

Wendy glanced at Leah and cleared her throat delicately, saying, "Stop kidding around. Time to board the plane."

"Are you sure you don’t want to leave with us?" Michael stopped being playful and was suddenly serious.

Timothy, who had been standing silently to one side, had heard what Michael said.

Immediately, he grabbed Wendy by the hand and stepped in front of her, saying with animosity, "Mr. Lucas, this is inappropriate. Corinne has not completed her project yet. Besides, she had also committed to following through with the project even after the groundwork has been laid. Taking her away now, from right under my eyes, is too much."

"If she was in Lake City, I would have no issues with her following through with this project," Michael replied. "But she’s now in Rheinsville City."

All he wanted was for Wendy to stay by his side so that he could watch over her constantly. That would be ideal.

But she was in a faraway place now.

In fact, Michael had initially considered coming to Rheinsville City with Wendy.

But the MC Group had no branches in Rheinsville City.

And since Wendy was going to be at HG for only about three months, he would not have enough time to transfer his company’s core operations to Rheinsville City.

Wendy would have already returned to Lake City even before the proceedings to set up a branch for MC could be completed.

As for working remotely from Rheinsville City, Michael had concluded that it was not feasible.

The MC Group was not only the biggest organization in Lake City but also globally ranked as a leading organization.

With his heavy workload, Michael simply did not have the time to commute between Lake City and Rheinsville City.

Wendy was only leading one project, and Timothy had not allowed her to do so remotely, precisely because productivity would be adversely affected.

If operations at MC were smooth sailing, Michael could have just focused on the critical aspects of the business.

But since Christian’s company had not collapsed, Michael had to stay vigilant.

If Christian had not been held in the detention center for one month, Michael would not have had the chance to acquire half of DR’s assets within a short time.

"Time to board," Wendy said with a sigh.

Sighing also, Michael took the kids by their hands and walked reluctantly through the gate to board the plane.

He had known that Wendy would disagree.

...

Having sent off Michael and the kids, Wendy felt a deep sense of emptiness.

Timothy, worried that Wendy might have a change of heart, wanted reassurance from her after Michael had departed. "Corinne, about what you promised me earlier, did you mean it? Or did you say it just so I could let Jill go?"

"Now, when have I ever lied to you?" Wendy reassured him. "Stop fretting. I gave you my word that I will lay the groundwork for this project before leaving, and I will keep my promise.

"And I will also oversee the project through to its launch, as long as you don’t make me stay in Rheinsville City.

"As for Jill, if she has not made her mark as a singer in two years, I will convince her to come back here, and I will personally mentor her.

"I will always keep my word."

Timothy had never doubted that Wendy would make good on her promise.

However, he was wary of Michael.

"But Michael had never agreed to your working on this project in the first place.

What if he were to object to you continuing on this project?" he asked.

"Well, Michael had also objected to me coming to HG, didn’t he?" Wendy countered, sounding a bit frustrated.

She and Michael had discussed this matter many times over and even had heated arguments over it.

"That’s it then." Wendy looked at her watch and suggested, "Todd’s almost done for the day. I’ll call and ask him to join us for dinner."

She knew that Timothy would definitely be in a bad mood today.

And she needed Todd to share her burden and try to talk some sense into Timothy.

Timothy had only mentored two people in his career. One of them was Todd and the other, Wendy.

And he had high aspirations for them both.

"Todd and I will have a good drinking session with you tonight," Wendy smiled, looking serene and elegant.

At that moment, her phone rang. Looking at the caller ID, she noted that Todd was calling her.

"Are you almost done for the day?" Wendy asked. "Timothy is back in town. Shall we have dinner with him?"

Actually, Todd had a pre-scheduled meeting to attend that evening.

However, according to Wendy, their mentor Timothy was back in town. Also, this was a rare occasion where Wendy had taken the initiative to ask him out for dinner.

As a result, Todd felt compelled to accept the invitation and agreed.

Hanging up, Wendy smiled and reached out to tug at Timothy’s arm. "Come on, Timothy. You’re the boss tonight. What do you feel like eating? Pick your restaurant.

My treat."

"Well, let me see. I will go for the most expensive food," Timothy responded.

Deliberately putting on an angry face, he added, "I’m going to spend your entire month’s salary on food."

"Sure, no problem. You can eat whatever you want," Wendy replied without hesitation. "If you like, you could even up it to three months’ worth of my salary!"

After all, she did not need the money.

"OK, then, I should think carefully about where I want to go," Timothy responded, taking some time to look for a good place.

Of course, he did not really search for the most expensive place to eat at.

Instead, he selected a restaurant that they frequented.

By the time they arrived at the restaurant, Todd was already there.

When he saw Wendy and Timothy, Todd said, "I’ve ordered some items that we usually eat. Check it out and see if there’s any need to add more?"

Todd was familiar with what Wendy and Timothy liked to eat.

And that was why Wendy did not even look at what he ordered, saying, "There’s no need. You have always ordered what we like to eat."

Todd nodded and then looked up at Wendy and asked, "Has Mr. Lucas left?"

"How did you know he was in town?" Wendy asked him back.

"I’m not the only one who knows," Todd smiled. "Everybody at HG knows. In fact, the gossip mill has been buzzing continuously for these past two days about you and Mr. Lucas."

Wendy, who had been drinking water from her glass, suddenly choked.

Reminded of the content and gossipy chat group, she looked a little embarrassed.
