Chapter 27: Mrs. Lucas’s Remarks
Even though Wendy was married to an extremely wealthy man, the truth was that she was even poorer than the average employee at the company.
Christian’s promise that he would pay her a salary ten times higher than Michael did make her feel moved beyond words. After all, she was going to leave Michael in two months.
Her fetus would be almost four months old by then. Pregnancy, childbirth, and childrearing were all processes that required money. If she could smoothly obtain one hundred thousand dollars over the next two months, it would be enough money to last her for a while, provided she saved up and spent wisely. Therefore, she did not pretend to refuse Christian’s offer.
"Thank you very much, Mr. Lucas," said Wendy as she bowed slightly.
"Alright, go ahead and do your own things," said Christian as he opened another game and stared at his screen once again.
Wendy spent the entire afternoon without anything to do. Time went by leisurely. But just when it was nearing the end of the workday, she received a call from Mrs. Lucas.
"Wendy, come here after work," said Madam Lucas. Her tone was not as overly sweet as it usually was toward Wendy, and in fact, Mrs. Lucas sounded rather displeased. She continued, "Ask Michael and Christian to come back as well."
"What’s the matter, Grandmother?" asked Wendy.
"Does something have to happen for the three of you to come back and see me?"
No matter how stupid Wendy was, Madam Lucas’s tone made it obvious that there was something wrong. She quickly explained herself, "That’s not what I meant, Grandmother, I just..."
Wendy had guessed that something must have happened, and it was likely to be an unhappy affair. She did not continue to explain herself. Instead, she took another approach and replied, "Understood, we’ll come over right away."
After hanging up the phone, Wendy went to Christian and told him, "Grandmother wants us to return to the mansion along with Michael."
Christian did not seem surprised to hear this. He merely acknowledged her words with a small smile on his face.
Wendy was starting to feel increasingly weird about this. She thought, Mrs. Lucas rarely asks us to go back if nothing significant has happened. Most importantly, she knows that Christian and Michael are not on good terms.
Why would she ask them to go back together?
Perhaps the scandal involving me, Michael, and Christian at the cafeteria today has reached her.
And now Mrs. Lucas wants us to go back and explain this to her. Even though she had guessed what was going on, Wendy could not refuse to go.
She did not want to approach Michael, but she dared not disobey Mrs. Lucas either. After arriving at the president’s office, Wendy knocked on the door. Michael announced his permission for her to enter.
Upon entering the room, Wendy said, "Mr. Lucas, Mrs. Lucas wants us to go back to the mansion."
Michael felt slightly surprised to see Wendy. He replied, "What happened?
"We’ll know when we get there," said Wendy calmly, "I’ve conveyed the message, so I’ll leave now."
"You don’t even want to talk to me now?"
Michael put down the pen in his hand and looked up at the woman standing before him. She had already turned her back to him. He said, "Are you in such a rush to go back to Christian?" freēwebnovel.com
When Wendy recalled how much she loved Michael in the past, she felt that she must have been blind. She thought, this man doesn’t trust me at all. He has already made up his mind about me being a fickle, promiscuous woman.
On top of that, he has such a poisonous mouth, capable of saying just about anything.
"You’re right about that. Christian is all smiling when he looks at me. I don’t need to talk about anything else but watching him smile at me makes me feel so good," Wendy retorted in anger.
With that, she turned around and walked out of the office proudly without caring about Michael’s reaction.
This was not her first time challenging Michael like this. Yet, each time she did so felt more refreshing than the last.
Wendy reached out and touched her belly. The corners of her lips curled. She suddenly felt grateful for her pregnancy. Her child had given her a reason to leave Michael instead of following him blindly like a shadow, as she did in the past.
She could already imagine the happiness and freedom she would regain after leaving Michael.
...
Wendy and Christian arrived at the carpark at the same time. She initially planned to drive herself there, but Christian told her, "Let’s go together. After all, we’re going the same way."
"I don’t think that’s a good idea," Wendy rejected him, "I’m sure you have guessed the reason why Grandmother wants to see us. If we go back together, I’m afraid that it will only aggravate the problem."
"What are you afraid of?" Christian suddenly reached out and grabbed Wendy’s hand. Then, he took her car keys.
Wendy instinctively tried to retract her hand, but Christian was holding her firmly.
"The two of you even want to go back to the mansion together. Don’t you think it’s wiser to go separately right now?" Michael suddenly appeared. In a sarcastic tone, he insulted Wendy, "Why are you such a s**t? Are you that needy?"
When Wendy heard Michael’s voice, she glanced over at him. She thought, Christian only insisted on going back with me because he saw Michael before I did. Initially, Wendy had no plans of returning to the mansion with Christian.
However, Michael had already insulted her anyway. She thought, it won’t be worth getting insulted if I don’t do what he’s accusing me of. Retracting her hand, she opened the car door and sat in the passenger seat. She said, "Christian, in that case, I’ll have to trouble you to drive us there."
Christian just wanted to provoke Michael at first, but now he saw that Wendy was serious about it. Since that was the case, Christian handed the car keys back to Wendy. He said, "You’re my assistant, you should drive."
The Lucas family members probably already knew about Wendy becoming Christian’s assistant. Since Wendy was Christian’s personal assistant, no one could say anything about her driving him to the mansion. She just had to tell them that this fell within the scope of her responsibility. Wendy understood what Christian was trying to do. She received the car keys and went over to the driver’s seat.
Michael watched as the two of them entered the car before him and drove away. He slammed his clenched fist into the car. Then, he got in, started the engine, and followed behind Wendy.
After they arrived at the mansion, they drove in one after another. Wendy got out of the car and personally opened the car door for Christian.
When Michael caught sight of that, his chest burned with rage.
Inside the mansion, Mrs. Lucas was sitting on the couch with a solemn look on her face. She did not look as kind and benevolent as she always did.
Wendy approached her first, "Grandmother, we’re back."
Mrs. Lucas glanced at the trio. In an angry tone which lacked her usual calmness, she said, "Kneel down."
Those two words were bewildering for all three of them.
"Do you need me to repeat myself!" Mrs. Lucas slammed her hand against the table surface With great force, causing herself some pain.
Wendy did not hesitate any further. She immediately kneeled before Mrs. Lucas. Michael had always treated his grandmother with respect. Even though he was slightly reluctant, he followed suit. However, Christian had no affection for the Lucas family. Having to kneel before Mrs. Lucas was difficult for him to accept.
Mrs. Lucas stared at Christian and said coldly, "If you don’t consider yourself a descendant of the Lucas family, you can leave the mansion right now."
This was obviously a threat. After all, Christian only received public acknowledgment of his ties to this family due to Mrs. Lucas’s recognition of him. Naturally, Mrs. Lucas also had the authority to kick him out of the family.
As there was no way around this, all Christian could do was kneel as well. He never expected his grandmother to be so furious. Christian had already guessed why their grandmother had summoned them, and he knew that she would surely be angry. He thought that she would just reprimand them and be done with it. Even though Christian acted like he was very close to Wendy when they were at work, the truth was that nothing had ever happened between them.
He had already thought of his excuse. When his grandmother interrogated him, he would simply say that he just wanted to help his sister-in-law because he did not like to see her get bullied by Michael all the time. After all, Mrs. Lucas had always been biased toward Wendy regarding this matter. She knew that Michael treated her poorly. Moreover, there was no romantic relationship between him and Wendy. He believed that Mrs. Lucas would have nothing to say about them.
Christian now realized that the situation had developed beyond his control. He needed to figure out a way to deal with it immediately.
"Do you know why I summoned you here?" asked Mrs. Lucas while sitting on the couch, looking at the three individuals kneeling before her. She had always been fond of Wendy, but she did not expect her to be so immature this time.
Christian and Michael remained quiet. Only Wendy spoke up, "Is this because I’m working as Christian’s personal assistant now?"
"It’s because news of the scandal between you and Christian in the company has started spreading!" Mrs. Lucas slammed her hand against the table again in a moment of rage.
Her face was flushed, and her pitch was raised as she said, "Wendy, I always thought that you were sensible. I did not expect you to be so foolish now. You are still Michael’s wife for the time being. I can turn a blind eye to it if you want to be Christian’s assistant, but you overstepped your boundaries by eating with him in the cafeteria. Do you know that everyone is gossiping about what the both of you did within the company? Do you know what others are saying about you? They said that you went to seduce Christian because you failed to get Michael. These outsiders do not even know about the real relationship between you and Michael, but they’re already saying such nasty things. I can only imagine how much worse it will be if they find out that you are married to Michael. I used to dote on you in the past
because I felt that Michael did not treat you fairly. I tried my best to help you keep Yvonne in her place. You were the one who told me not to interfere in your affairs and just turn a blind eye to Yvonne’s presence. What about now? What is going on with you? Do you have a grudge against us? Is that why you are trying to tarnish the reputation of the Lucas family?"
Mrs. Lucas’s top priority was to maintain the family’s pristine reputation. Although the Lucas family had not been as wealthy during her generation, they had excellent family traditions.
There was never any negative gossip about them. But the next generation failed her-her son did not live up to her expectations. The company’s value went up, but Anthony Lucas got involved in an extramarital affair. Rather than change for the better, her grandsons ended up learning from Anthony’s bad habits.
Wendy did not know how to react to Mrs. Lucas’s scolding. Even after a long time passed, all she could do was bow her head and apologize. She could not explain herself. She needed to protect the baby she was carrying.
Even if this caused everyone to misunderstand her, she just had to persist for two more months before she could leave Lake City.
"Grandmother, it was me who asked Wendy to be my assistant," Christian spoke up, "Wendy.."
It would have been better if Christian remained silent. The moment he spoke, Michael grew enraged. He said, "You do know that Wendy is your sister-in-law. Clearly, you should have kept your distance."
"Michael, Wendy leads a very difficult life all by herself, she..."
"So, you wanted to help take care of Wendy for the rest of her life?" frёewebηovel.cѳm
"Michael, you know that’s not what I meant. You say that, but it is precisely what you did."
"Enough!" Mrs. Lucas interrupted her two grandsons as they started fighting. "Aren’t the both of you embarrassed enough already? You’re equally at fault, and even more so than Wendy is!"
Mrs. Lucas pointed at Michael and said, "You’ve been married for three years, but how many times have you gone home? You spent every single day with Yvonne and even brought her into the company. Fortunately, your employees do not know about your real relationship with Wendy, but if they did, what would they say? Instead of cultivating good habits, you picked up your father’s worst traits!"
Tilting her head slightly, she started reprimanding Christian. "And you! How long have you been back? l allowed you to join the company, and I let you take on the position of vice-president immediately. What else are you unhappy about? Ah? Why did you feel the need to do all these things? Is this the only way you will be happy? Let me tell you, I might not care much about what goes on within the company, but I’m still the matriarch of the Lucas family!"
After Mrs. Lucas’s remarks, nobody dared to say anything else. The incident at the company cafeteria had caused quite a big stir among the employees. If Mrs. Lucas had not summoned all three of them back to the mansion today to reprimand them, there was no telling what kind of trouble they would get into next.
