Chapter 269: Can’t Reach Him

Wendy only realized that her birthday was the next day after Leah mentioned it.

Michael was bringing the two children along to see her too, and that made her happy.

"Mommy, did you forget your birthday?" Jake’s little face appeared on her screen as well. "We initially thought of giving you a surprise, but we were afraid that you would be working on your birthday, so we decided to tell you about it in advance instead. Remember, take a leave for tomorrow and don’t go to work."

"Sure, Mommy will make a phone call right now." Wendy was beaming from ear to ear as she started feeling excited.

"We’ll see you tomorrow then!" Jake waved at her.

After she hung up, Wendy called Timothy immediately.

She didn’t need to inform Timothy if she was going to the office or not. She was leading an independent team after all. Thus, even though they were part of HG, they ran autonomously.

However, she decided to inform him out of respect.

Everyone in the company knew how hard Wendy had been working for the past month, and this was the first time she was asking for a leave, so Timothy had no reason to reject her request.

Once she had successfully applied for leave, she lay back down on her bed and could only think of her children and Michael.

It had been a whole month since she last saw them, and she was about to see them the next day. She was too excited to even sleep.

Shortly after that, she got a text message from Michael: [We’re at the airport.]

She replied [Sure, I’ll pick you guys up at the airport tomorrow.]

Then she continued to hold onto her phone excitedly the entire night and couldn’t fall asleep at all. She only managed to do so after the sun had already risen.

Her alarm clock went off on time.

She immediately jumped out of bed, washed up, and put on her prettiest dress.

After she applied lipstick and was satisfied with how she looked, she grabbed her car keys and handbag and headed for the door.

However, to her surprise, a huge bouquet of lilies greeted her as she opened the door.

"Happy birthday, Corrine!" Todd peeked out from behind the flowers.

She was about to close the door initially, but since it was Todd, she took a step back to let him into the house.

The lilies smelled great, and it lifted her mood. She laughed and asked, "Oh my, you still remember my birthday?"

"I’m the one who’s celebrated your birthday with you for the past five years." Todd shook his head as if he was disappointed and teased her, "How could you forget that?"

"Thank you," Wendy said as she took the flowers from him and placed them in the living room. "I’m sorry, but I can’t invite you to stay for a chat today."

Todd raised an eyebrow. "You’ve got plans?"

"Uh-huh." Wendy’s gaze was gentle and filled with happiness. "Michael’s bringing Jake and Leah over, so I’m headed to the airport to pick them up now."

"They’re here?" It had occurred to Todd that they might come over since it was Wendy’s birthday, but his expression still faltered when he heard her confirm it.

Then again, his expression fell for just half a second before reverting to a smile. He said flatly, "I’ll go with you to pick them up then. I haven’t seen Jake and Leah in a long time, and I’m beginning to miss them."

"It’s alright, you’re so busy anyway. I can pick them up myself." She nodded at him to thank him, then said, "I’ll treat you to a meal next time."

Todd could tell that Wendy was trying to turn him away.

It was her birthday and Michael was here with the kids, so they were planning to celebrate her birthday as a family.

The birthday surprise he had prepared for Wendy wasn’t going to be necessary after all.

However, it wasn’t a bad thing. With Michael and the children around, Wendy would be even happier.

....

Wendy got to the airport extra early.

As long as there were no flight delays, then Michael, Leah, and Jake would arrive in about an hour or so as scheduled.

This hour was filled with much joy and anticipation.

She felt a little impatient, but the thought of seeing the three of them soon made her feel that all her hard work over the past month was worth it.

She smiled as she started looking through their photos on her phone, wondering if they had been well over the past month. Would Jake and Leah be taller? Was Michael less busy now?

A hundred questions popped up in her head as she thought about the three of them.

Time passed, but the three of them hadn’t arrived even though it was already past 10 AM.

She tiptoed and tried her best to look for them among the stream of passengers coming through the arrival gate, but none of the faces were familiar to her.

She waited until 11 AM, but there was no sign of them walking out.

The longer she waited, the more anxious she became. She took her phone out and called Michael’s number, only to hear an automated message informing her that the phone was switched off. freёwebnovel.com

She licked her slightly dry lips as a bad feeling crept over her.

She ran over to the information counter to ask the staff to help her check on the flight.

The staff confirmed that their flight hadn’t been delayed at all. It had arrived at 10 AM as scheduled.

However, it had been more than an hour past the arrival time, and she still hadn’t spotted any of her family members. On top of that, she couldn’t contact Michael either.

She tried Michael’s number one more time.

It was still off.

Just when she was about to break down in panic, her phone suddenly rang.

She picked it up without even looking at the screen to see who was calling. "Michael, are you guys here?"

Todd frowned when he heard the panic in her voice and said, "Corrine, it’s Todd."

"Oh. Hello, Todd." Wendy took a deep breath as she clutched her head with her other hand and continued to look for the three of them in the crowded airport with a heavy heart.

"What happened? Mr. Lucas hasn’t arrived yet?" Todd was calling precisely to ask about this.

He didn’t know what time Michael’s flight was, but it was clear that something had gone terribly wrong from Wendy’s voice.

"The flight they were supposed to arrive at 10 AM, but I haven’t seen them come out until now. I tried calling Michael, but his phone was off." Wendy’s voice sounded more and more anxious. "I’m afraid something bad might have happened to them."

"Calm down, I’ll go to the airport right now," Todd comforted her. "Tell me exactly where you are, and I’ll be right there."

She wanted to tell him that she could handle it, but before she could say anything, Todd added, "I’m not busy today, so don’t worry about holding my work back."

He reached the airport quickly and spotted her, looking left and right with a panicked and helpless expression on her face. He quickly walked over to her.

Meanwhile, Wendy was on the phone with Zess. "Michael brought the two children out of the house?"

"That’s right. You mean they haven’t arrived yet? They’ve left early for the flight," Zess replied, puzzled. "They should have arrived by now."

Zess had no idea what happened to the three of them, which made Wendy even more worried.
