Chapter 219: Just For Show For My Mother

Wendy searched the entire bedroom but could not find the marriage certificate. She went to the other rooms and ransacked every possible place but nothing could be found. After one round of searching in all the rooms, she went back to the bedroom.

She rationalized that something as important as the marriage certificate should be kept in the bedroom. Did she miss a spot?

Wendy searched high and low in the bedroom again but still could not find a hint of it.

She sat on her bed. Her forehead had little beads of sweat and she rumbled, "How come it is nowhere to be found?"

Michael walked into the bedroom. He briefly glanced at the phone Wendy threw on the bed. With a more agitated tone, he said, "I knew it, Wendy. The marriage certificate was never intended to be found by you. This little trick of yours... if I, Michael Lucas, cannot see through it, then I have wasted my years of experience in the competitive corporate world, encountering all the tricks people could pull when they are desperate."

"The little trick of mine?" Wendy looked at Michael unbelievably. The Michael that was standing in front of her now was a totally different person from the Michael yesterday. He was also a different person from this morning. A mere phone call had the power to change him entirely?

Wendy laughed coldly, "Explain yourself. What do you mean by the ’little trick of mine’?"

"I found out about your adultery and then you insisted on having a divorce. But yet you hid the marriage certificate because you did not intend to have a divorce in the first place. You are enjoying your status and luxury now. How can you possibly bear to let go of them all?"

Wendy was very disappointed in Michael. She grabbed the pillow on the bed and threw it at Michael. She shouted, "Yes, that is right! It is as per what you said. I, Wendy Stewart, cannot let go of what I have currently."

"You finally admitted it, Wendy." Michael looked at Wendy’s despair and disappointment. The pain in his heart pierced through his soul. It was unbearable.

He did not dodge from the pillow flying in his direction as that was what he deserved. Wendy was suffering more than he was now.

"isn’t it just a marriage certificate? Even if we can’t find it, we can apply for a backup copy. It can be done at the marriage registry anyway. Once we get the official duplicated copy, we waste no time in settling the divorce there and then." Wendy stood up and turned towards the door. She said coldly, "Let’s go now, right away."

Looking at Wendy’s back view, he picked up Wendy’s mobile phone that was still on the bed.

The screen lit up, showing that the call had gone past half an hour now. The caller was reflected as Mrs. Lucas. Michael scoffed as he stared at the phone. If he could choose, he would not wish to be born into such a family.

He was forced to endure immense pressure and responsibility from a young age. His father having an adultery, his half-brother who was fathered by the same person as he was, the broken family... none of these had let him live carefree.

On top of these, his own mother having gone through a broken family was now directing her son to go the same route.

He knew what Winnie had in mind. She had been trying to matchmake Yonina with himself, likely because of the family background Yonina had.

She had been belittled by Lily her whole life. She could not hold her husband back from flings and hence she was venting it out on her son by controlling him. The ultimate goal was to take revenge by taking out Christian’s company with the strong collaboration between Michael’s company and the Collins Group.

Anthony had retired so Lily was dependent on Christian. To Winnie, she could defeat Lily if Christian’s business failed. It was the reason why she was determined to do it at the expense of her son’s family, even if it meant to destroy his happiness and disown her grandchildren.

All these just to win Lily. How hilarious. Michael ended the call and gripped onto the phone. He was feeling suffocated within. Who would have known, the greatest saboteur would be his own biological mother?

"What are you waiting for? We set off now!"

Wendy was initially still in pajamas. She quickly changed into a simple outfit and saw Michael standing in the living room with no intention to move.

Her gaze shifted down to her phone that Michael was holding onto. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

Wendy reached out and snatched her phone back. She looked furiously at Michael, "Aren’t we getting a divorce? Didn’t you see through my tricks? Then why does it seem like you don’t want to leave the house now?" freēwebnovel.com

"Wendy..." Michael reached his hand out towards Wendy as he called out.

As she had not got over their argument earlier, she smacked his hand away and shouted, "Don’t touch me!"

Wendy took two steps back to distant herself from Michael and retorted, "Michael, whoever backs out from this is a mouse!"

Michael remained silent for a while and said, "Squeak squeak..."

Wendy was dumbfounded. Her eyes were filled with suspicion and shock.

"Michael, are you mad?" Wendy was clueless what Michael had in mind. Didn’t he insist on getting a divorce? He did not say a thing when she ransacked the rooms for the marriage certificate. And now he was admitting that he was a ’mouse’? Did he change his mind again?

"I’m sorry, Wendy." Michael apologized for his actions earlier. He lowered his head as his guilty conscious made him unable to look at her in the eyes.

"What do you mean exactly?" Wendy was getting all confused by Michael’s contradicting actions.

Michael took a deep breath and explained.

"Wendy, hear me out first, would you?"

Michael continued, "I knew the call earlier was from my mother. I said I wanted the divorce so as to spike you and get into an argument with you. All those are just for show for my mother. I know you lost your memory. You forgot about our past and you forgot about the kind of relationship you had with my mother. You want to recover your lost memories and find out what happened between us. I wouldn’t tell you but you heard things from my mother and you trusted the words she said to you. Or perhaps you didn’t believe it entirely, but you losing your memories made it impossible for you to verify if what she said was true.

And because of these, you would not believe me. Furthermore, she is my mother, so you won’t suspect that she is doing all these to break up our marriage. Hence, I made use of the opportunity to let her believe that we were at loggerheads. From now on, if my mother asks you out or ask you to do anything, just do it to appease her. If my mother says things to worsen our relationship, you can show your displeasure towards me. The worse our relationship looks to her, the better. I’ll prove to you my mother’s intentions for her doings and actions."

Michael understood that his explanations were merely words and would not prove anything.

Even if Wendy believed his words now, it would be inevitable that Winnie would bring up old scores to stir things up. Of course, Michael was indeed guilty of all that he had done to Wendy in the past. Even if so, he could not let Winnie continue to rub salt onto the wounds or meddle the wounds to make them worse.

He did not expect to fight head-on with his own mother like that. As much as he did not want to put his own mother in bad light, he knew he had to do it eventually.

After hearing Michael out, Wendy was not sure if she should trust him.

Michael saw her expression of disbelief and sighed. He laid both hands on her shoulders and pleaded, "I know you don’t trust me, but just this once? Trust me this time."

She raised her head and looked into Michael’s sincere eyes. She gave in and just nodded.
