Chapter 189: Show Some Respect!
"Besides, aren’t you and senior Mr Lucas father and son? Working with him is also considered working with the Lucas family." Mr. Nathan justified himself.
He was just trying to find an excuse to make what he was doing reasonable.
"Mr. Nathan, to be honest," Michael sat himself down next to Mr. Nathan, "I am here about that contract today."
He had only just finished speaking when Mr. York brought the contract to them.
Michael put the contract down in front of Mr. Nathan and said, "If there are any terms you find unsatisfactory, we can change them."
"Well..." Mr. Nathan glanced at Anthony and answered, "The problem does not lie with the terms of the contract. To tell you the truth, your father is an old friend of my father’s. He’s already getting on in years and yet has come to personally discuss working together with me. I can’t possibly reject him on account of his relationship with my father."
"You can’t reject him?" Michael looked at Anthony and his lips curved up in a half smile.
"I wonder how much their relationship is worth? Quote a price."
It was obvious Michael had every intention of going against Anthony. When Anthony heard Michael’s offer, his face blanched.
"Mr. Lucas, aren’t you making things difficult for me?" Mr Nathan said uncomfortably.
"What did my father offer you?" Michael was intent upon clinching the deal that day.
He no longer cared about profit.
If he lost the deal today, Anthony would be behind him every step of the way, trying to take back every customer he poached.
"Well..." Mr. Nathan was in a difficult position.
"Didn’t you say you have to put the company interests first? Since it’s for the sake of your company, we’ll talk about profit." Michael inclined his head slightly as he narrowed his eyes at Mr. Nathan.
This was round one between him, Anthony and Christian.
He would win it at all costs!
"Michael, don’t make things difficult for Mr. Nathan." Anthony finally spoke up. "You have so many other potential clients in your hands, one less will not make any difference to you. Let me have Mr. Nathan’s contract."
"Does the senior Mr. Lucas mean to say that I should give in to you on account of our relationship?" Michael said as he replied with a smile that did not reach his eyes, "How much do you think our relationship is worth to me?"
"You!" Anthony was so angry his face had gone pale.
The two men were obviously on the verge of a major fallout.
Mr. Nathan stood aside, watching them fearfully. As far as he was concerned. He could not afford to offend any of the three of them, whether it was Michael, Christian or Anthony.
"Mr. Lucas..." Mr. Nathan said.
"Ten percent!" Micheal called out. "I will add another ten percent on top of the five percent we agreed upon!"
"Ten..." Mr. Nathan was completely taken aback.
His goods were worth two hundred million. Ten percent would be twenty million.
Including the previously agreed upon five percent, that was a total of thirty million!
The profit margin for him was traditionally low.
In previous deals, getting five percent was already a big deal.
This time, Michael was offering fifteen percent?
That would leave Michael with no profit at all!
"Mr. Lucas, are you familiar with the market rate?" Mr. Nathan thought Michael was just fooling around with him and did not dare take his words seriously.
Michael replied calmly, "If I give you fifteen percent of the profit, I earn nothing. In fact, I might make a loss, right?"
"Since you know that, why are you..." Mr. Nathan did not complete his question, but it was obvious what he wanted to ask.
Michael glanced at Anthony and said, "It’s pointless to add one percent at a time."
If he had done that Anthony would definitely counter every offer Michael made with a slightly higher offer. Michael was in no mood to entertain Anthony. What he wanted was the final victory.
Mr. Nathan was ecstatic when he heard Michael’s offer. His eyes lit up and his disbelief turned into elation. "Let’s sign the contract, Mr. Lucas. Let’s sign it now!"
"Mr Nathan does not need to consider more?" Michael smiled and said, "You don’t need to bother about the senior Mr. Lucas’s feelings anymore?"
"Mr. Lucas is the most powerful businessman in Lake City. You are the best choice for a long term business partner!" Mr. Nathan would be profiting greatly from the new terms of the contract and didn’t care about Anthony anymore.
"Senior Mr. Lucas, aren’t you going to make an offer? Perhaps offer another percent or two more than me?" asked Michael, deliberately looking at Anthony.
Christian was still in the remand center and Anthony dared not offer fifteen percent of the profits like Michael had without Christian’s approval. If he did that, DR would make a huge loss! Besides, Anthony knew that it was not just this one deal that Michael was targeting.
He had his eye on all of Christian’s deals.
The fact that Michael was willing to go to such lengths to secure this deal meant that he would be willing to do the same for all future contracts.
If Anthony chose to match Michael’s offer and go one up, it was inevitable that either DR or MC would go down.
Both Michael and Christian were his sons. Although Anthony had agreed to help Christian, he had no wish for either son’s business to fail.
However, Michael’s actions had made Anthony furious.
He slammed the table hard with one hand, growling angrily, "Michael, I am your father, shouldn’t you at least show some respect?"
"My father?" Michael burst out laughing at the words. It was a while before he stopped. His face abnormally grim, he said, "If you are my father, why did you try to take my deal from me? If you really cared about my feelings, why did you choose to help Christian? After everything you’ve done, you dare claim to be my father?"
"Michael, I didn’t have a choice." Anthony realised that it was no use going head on with Michael and decided to change his approach to a gentler one. "Lily threatened me with her life. If I didn’t agree to help her, she would have killed herself."
"You’re laughable." Michael shook his head.
"Can’t you see that Lily was saying that so you would give in?"
"What if she really killed herself?" Anthony reached out for Michael’s hand. "Michael, can’t you give way this once? If what happened here today is made known, people will lose all respect for me!"
Out of the corner of his eye, Michael saw a fruit knife on the side table. He stood up, picked up the knife and held it threateningly to his own throat. "If you take this deal from me today, I will kill myself in front of you!"
"What are you doing!" Anthony immediately stood up and reached out for the knife in Michael’s hand.
The moment Anthony’s hand reached for the knife, Michael calmly gave it to him.
Knife in hand, Anthony was flabbergasted. Even if Michael was just putting on an act, he should have made it more realistic!
"Is that how Lily threatened you?" Michael asked as he looked at Anthony’s confused face.
Anthony swallowed with some difficulty, his face contorting strangely. freewebnøvel.com
Mr. Nathan, who had watched their exchange quietly, immediately said to MIchael, smiling, "Mr. Lucas, I have decided to work with MC. Don’t worry, as long as your terms do not change, I will not change my mind."
After all , where else would he find a company which would sell his goods for him without earning any profit?
If he had to, Mr. Nathan would do anything for Michael so long as he kept his word.
Turning to Anthony, Mr. Nathan said to him solemnly, "Senior Mr. Lucas, you should leave first."
Anthony’s face flashed in shades of red and white, partly due to anger and partly due to embarrassment.
Michael totally did not show him any respect at all.
