Chapter 173: Traumatic

"Conference?" Zen was dumbfounded since she hadn’t been informed about Wendy’s situation yet.

The doctor explained, "Mrs. Lucas can’t remember anything that happened after she turned twenty-one and you were her best friend in college during her sophomore year. Can you recall any significant conference Mrs. Lucas attended that year?"

Zen thought about the doctor’s question. Then, she glanced at Michael.

He couldn’t help feeling anxious when he saw Zen peeking at him.

"Could... could it be the thing I fear the most?" he thought.

The last thing he wanted was Wendy’s selective amnesia to be because of him. Zen pursed her lips as she wasn’t sure if she should say it or not.

"Zen, can you remember anything?" Wendy asked her worriedly.

"The speaker is Michael Lucas from the MC Group. Do you still remember our dream to join the MC Group after graduation, Wendy?" Zen still wasn’t sure what was happening, but she was willing to do everything to help Wendy recover.

"Michael Lucas?" Suddenly, Wendy recalled the image of a man, yet she wasn’t able to remember what he looked like no matter how hard she tried.

Her head started to hurt again as she struggled with her memory and she began hitting her head in frustration.

Zen grabbed her hand and said, "It’s alright, it’s alright. I’ll fill you in with the details later."

Both the doctor and Michael could understand the situation after Zen’s brief yet messy conversation with Wendy.

The doctor turned to Michael and Zen. "Mr. Lucas, Zen, please come to my office."

After arriving at the doctor’s office, he asked Zen, "You’re Mrs. Lucas’s college friend, so I bet you know how much that meeting meant to her, don’t you?"

"Yes, I do..." Zen answered awkwardly as she glanced at Michael. "That was when Wendy met Mr. Lucas for the first time."

One day during Wendy’s sophomore year in college, Michael went to her college campus as a conference guest, and that was the first time Wendy met Michael.

Love at first sight was the perfect description for Wendy’s feelings for Michael at the conference. After that, Wendy devoted all her energy and time to him.

Coincidentally, she also bumped into Yvonne Taylor who tried to seduce Michael by drugging him. However, Wendy accidentally slept with him that night. After which, she married Michael.

For Michael, he used to go to many college conferences as a keynote speaker in the past, so he couldn’t remember any details of the event Zen mentioned. However, Zen’s elaboration of that day sent him in despair.

People who suffered from selective amnesia usually lost memories of the most traumatic events in their lives. In Wendy’s case, it seemed that Michael was the most disastrous thing that had ever happened to her since eight years worth of memories were erased because of him.

Michael was on the verge of crying while staring at the floor.

He had always known that he caused Wendy a lot of pain and suffering and he tried to make up for it. But he didn’t know, until today, how incredible the extent of the damage he caused was.

It was so traumatic, that her brain completely shut out eight years of her life just so that she could forget Michael.

"Mr. Lucas, you don’t need to beat yourself up like this," the doctor started to try to console Michael. "In many cases, selective amnesia is temporary, and chances are she will recall what happened. It wasn’t necessarily Mrs. Lucas’s personal choice to forget what happened in the past eight years. It might be a self-defense mechanism in her subconscious. Didn’t Mrs. Lucas forget about her children as well? Stop being so hard on yourself. We’ll try to get her memories back."

Unfortunately, the doctor’s comforting words worked the other way around and only made Michael blame himself more.

Michael raised his hand and struck his own face hard.

’Screw you, Michael!’ He thought to himself. ’How dare you hurt her like that?!’

Despite knowing that her blindness was only temporary, Wendy was still scared as she could see nothing but darkness.

Nevertheless, she didn’t want to let anyone know of her fear because she didn’t want to worry those who cared about her.

Mary and Wendy’s kids kept talking to Wendy when Michael and Zen were in the doctor’s office since the doctor said it would help jog her memory if she was told more stories from her past.

Jake and Leah were more upset than anyone else since their mother had forgotten about them.

Leah held Wendy’s hands as tears were about to burst from her eyes, "Mommy, please remember me and my brother. Please don’t forget about us."

Wendy would’ve been shocked to find out that she had had two children if Mary hadn’t explained to her that she had been married with kids.

Wendy smiled and raised her hand, trying to figure out where Leah’s face was.

Leah grasped Wendy’s hand after seeing how lost Wendy was and put it on her face.

"Mommy, you used to love stroking my face, remember?" Leah said. "You used to tell me how soft my face is, remember? You’ll definitely remember me!"

"Leah. Give mommy some time," Jake tried to comfort her seeing how red Wendy’s eyes were. "Mommy will definitely get there. She just needs some more time."

Leah sniffed, wiped away her tears, and nodded.

As they were talking to Wendy, Michael and Zen came back from the doctor’s office.

"How’s my mom?" Jake wasted no time asking Michael as he couldn’t stop worrying about Wendy. "What did the doctor say?"

Michael suddenly didn’t have the guts to face Wendy. He looked down at his son who was just a kid, his own heart filled with guilt.

Zen interjected, "The doctor has assured us that your mommy will get her memories back if she cooperates well. Don’t worry too much."

Wendy was the most important thing in everyone’s mind, so they dropped everything that was on their plates and spent the entire afternoon chatting with her.

As dusk drew near, Michael asked the others to go take a break since he wanted to spend some time alone with Wendy.

Mary was concerned about his health as he had been exerting so much energy for days while still recovering from his own injury. "You’d better take tonight off, Michael. I’ll look after Wendy tonight," she said.

"It’s alright, Ms. Stewart. There’s a spare bed right there and I’ll take a nap if I’m tired," Michael rejected her offer because he wanted to take care of Wendy himself.

"No, I won’t allow it. All of us had a good night’s sleep yesterday, except you. I know how concerned you are about Wendy, but I’m her mother. You can trust me more than anyone else to take care of her. I’ll call you right away if anything happens. Does that sound alright?"

Mary had witnessed Michael protecting Wendy for almost a week straight.

She didn’t know what happened between Wendy and Michael in the past few years,

but she had confidence in her eyes, and what she saw told her that Wendy was in good hands with Michael. freewёbnoνel.com

Michael started pushing Mary away seeing how determined she was. "Ms. Stewart, please just help me and Wendy by taking care of Jake," he said with a smile. "The doctor said that Wendy needs to be on a light diet for now. Would you mind making some veggie porridge for her?" He then took out a set of keys and handed them to Mary. "I have a house that’s close to the hospital. I’ll have Mr. York lead you there."

Michael then took a look at Todd and Leah and spoke, "The house is large enough for you and Leah to sleep there as well."

Mary sighed as she saw how exhausted Michael was and the bandages on his chest.

’Impressive,’ Mary thought. ’He’s a patient himself, yet he still insists on staying and looking after Wendy.’
