Chapter 159: We’re Both Going To Hell
It was the middle of night when everyone was sound asleep and where the only sounds that permeated the night air came from the frogs in the fields and the chirping crickets.
At that time, a few shadows appeared in the dark of the night.
Both Wendy’s and Michael’s cars were parked side by side outside Mary’s house.
Knowing which car belonged to Michael, Yvonne focused her attention on Wendy’s car. Since the car was locked, she was unable to get inside. However, the thugs that she had brought along with her, the ones that Christian had hired, were right behind her.
Although they weren’t exceptionally talented, they were highly capable of petty tactics aimed at causing harm and damage.
Wendy woke up the following day and began to pack up. She had planned to return to Lake City that day.
Because both Michael and Todd had gone to bed pretty late, they did not wake up until after 10 AM.
After breakfast, Mary persuaded them to stay for lunch before departing.
Having had lunch, a teary Mary patted Wendy gently on the back and urged, "Don’t forget to bring the kids back here again when you have the time."
"Mom, why are you persisting in not coming with me?" Wendy asked. Squeezing Mary’s hands gently, reluctant to leave her, she repeated her offer. "Why don’t you come to Lake City and live with us, together with Jake and Leah. Won’t that be nice?"
"I have been a teacher all my life. I cannot just up and leave the children," Mary said, sniffling and mopping at her tears. "Just make sure you bring the kids back to visit whenever you have the time."
Wendy knew that Mary would not agree to leave with them.
Reaching out to hug her mom, Wendy choked up as she uttered, "Take care of yourself."
"I will. Now go," Mary released Wendy and waved her away.
It was a matter of time before they had to leave. Any delay would just increase the pain of separation.
Taking each child by the hand, Wendy nodded goodbye to Mary. Then, she turned and got into her car.
Leah had initially wanted to ride with Wendy and Jake. However, Michael scooped her up in his arms and told her, "Why don’t you and your Daddy ride in Uncle Michael’s car?"
Leah looked at Wendy in disappointment, not wishing to be separated from her. But as a child, she didn’t have much say in the matter. In a matter of seconds, she was safely seated in Michael’s car.
Smiling helplessly, Todd took the hint and got into Michael’s car.
Michael waved goodbye to Mary, saying, "See you, Mom. We’ll come back again soon. Take care."
"Sure," Mary nodded and waved back.
As she watched them driving off, Mary suddenly felt empty. The laughter and noise of yesterday had suddenly dissipated, leaving only a cold void. It was just as well that she had a class that afternoon to get her out of the empty house and help her get over the empty feeling.
Wendy had just settled into her seat when she received a call from Zen.
In fact, Zen had hesitated for a long time before mustering up the courage to call Wendy. After having overheard Christian’s phone conversation on the previous day, she wanted to call Wendy and warn her. However, she knew nothing about what Christian was planning or what his objective was.
Initially, she had planned to first find that out before calling to warn Wendy.
Unfortunately, Christian had made sure that she found out absolutely nothing.
Worried for Wendy, she called her anyway.
On her part, Wendy was a little surprised when Zen called. They had only met up once, when she returned to Lake City, and had not kept in touch since.
Although they had been very close in the past, they were now on opposing sides since Zen was now in Christian’s camp. It was why their relationship was now a tad strained.
Securing her seat belt, Wendy turned on her Bluetooth function. Using the handsfree function, she spoke as she drove, "Zen..."
"Wendy, where are you right now?" Zen demanded, getting straight to the point.
"I’ve been in Linton. I’m on my way back to Lake City now. Why do you ask?" Wendy questioned. Noting that Michael was already driving off, she put the car into gear and drove out as well.
"There’s something I think you ought to know," Zen gripped her phone tightly, her lips trembling in trepidation as her tone became increasingly serious.
"Tell me."
"Someone might be planning to harm you, so please be careful," Zen replied.
She had initially wanted to ask Wendy if she was doing OK lately. However, from Wendy’s tone, she gathered that nothing unusual had happened and figured that Christian’s plan had not been executed as yet. Knowing that, she heaved a secret sigh of relief.
"Did you just say that someone might be trying to harm me?" Wendy frowned, not quite understanding what Zen meant.
"I can’t tell you more because I don’t know the specifics. In any case, you should be careful," Zen sighed, feeling very conflicted.
The last thing she wanted was to have Christian and Wendy at loggerheads with each other. In fact, she did not want them to have any interaction at all.
"OK," Wendy replied, adding, "Thank you for warning me."
Suddenly, Wendy heard a shriek of distress from the other end of the line.
"Zen?" Wendy yelled out to her. "Hey Zen, what’s happened?"
"Who was that on the phone?" Wendy heard Christian asking Zen.
In the next second, she heard Zen saying, "I’m fine. Later." After that brief explanation, all Wendy heard was an engaged tone.
Fearing for Zen, Wendy called her back immediately, but it went unanswered.
At the other end, Christian held Zen’s hand in an iron grip as he hissed menacingly, "What did you say to Wendy? Were you warning her about me?"
"Yeah, I’ve told her everything," Zen replied, staring defiantly at him.
In fact, she had not mentioned who was trying to harm Wendy. Even at this critical moment, she was still trying to protect Christian.
Unfortunately, her efforts were futile because Christian had never trusted her.
"Haha..." Christian sneered. Increasing the strength of his grip on her hand, he continued, "Do you want to know what I am planning? Well, let me tell you. With the men that I had sent to her, Yvonne has instructed them to tamper with the brakes in Wendy’s car. Do you get it now?"
"Are you nuts?" Zen looked at him in utter disbelief. In her panic, she shrieked, "Are you a monster, Christian? How could you help Yvonne to get Wendy killed? I thought you loved Wendy! Why are you doing this?"
Enraged by the word ’love’, Christian slapped Zen across the face with the back of his hand.
The sheer force of his slap sent Zen reeling as she fell backwards onto the floor, a trickle of blood flowing from the corner of her mouth.
Stooping down in front of her, he gripped her chin and forced her to look up at him.
With an evil smile, he jeered. "Love? I don’t need love and I will never love!"
At that, Zen suddenly burst out laughing bitterly, "Christian Lucas, you are one heartless man!"
When Zen first fell in love with Christian, she had no idea how evil he really was. After all, she had not been privy to what exactly had transpired between Wendy and him.
So when had she found out about them? It might have been four years ago, when he had slept with her, having mistaken her for Wendy. At that time, Zen had naively assumed that, with Wendy dead and gone, it did not matter if Christian had seen her as Wendy’s replacement.
She had thought that, in time, he would fall in love with her.
The irony of it all was that despite having seen for herself how Wendy’s steadfast love for one man had transformed her into a pathetic laughing stock, Zen had followed in her footsteps.
She had fallen in love with that monster Christian Lucas!
"Heartless?" Christian sneered as though he had just heard a joke. "How do you think I have survived till this day if I have not been heartless?"
The look in his eyes made Zen shudder in fear. He looked like a monster, his bloodshot eyes emitting evil and an insatiable thirst for blood.
Supporting herself on the floor with her hands, Zen began retreating slowly from him. When she noticed her phone where Christian had thrown it, she crawled desperately to reach it, intending to call Wendy.

Unfortunately, she was no match for Christian, who was way more agile than her.
Before she could grab at the phone, he had already stepped on her outstretched hand, crushing it with his foot.
Zen inhaled sharply at the pain. She knew that the Christian that she was dealing with now was not the man that she had known him to be.
"Why must you insist on having Wendy killed?" Zen asked, not understanding his real motive.
Although Christian had always denied that he loved Wendy, Zen knew better. All these years, he would make frequent trips to Rheinsville City just to watch her.
There was also that time, four years ago, when he had been blind drunk and uttering Wendy’s name. Unbeknownst to everyone around him, he had fallen in love with his sister-in-law.
It was common knowledge that Christian hated Michael and Zen would understand if he wished to have Michael killed. But why did Christian have to drag Wendy into his war with his brother?
"Won’t it upset you if something bad happens to Wendy?" Zen looked him in the eye,
attempting to dissuade him from harming Wendy. freewebnøvel.coɱ
Alas, she was not someone that Christian would listen to.
"If Wendy dies, the person who would be most affected would be my brother," Christian replied, his eyes gleaming brightly with evil satisfaction.
He looked like the devil, save for his angelic smile. It was a sight that sent shivers down Zen’s spine.
"You really are insane!" Zen shook her head in disbelief.
"Hey, you said you love me, right?" Christian asked, adding, "So I’ll give you a chance..."
Not knowing what he meant, Zen kept quiet, waiting for what he was about to say next.
Removing his foot from her hand, Christian pointed to the phone, "You have two options. One, call Wendy and warn her about the tampered brakes. Or two, say nothing and wait for something bad to happen to her. Once she’s dead, I will marry you."
Zen was stunned by what he had just said.
"Are you forcing me to end up in hell with you?"
The physical pain on the back of her hand, caused by him stepping on it, was nothing compared to the pain inflicted by his words.
This was one crazy, scary man. Zen deeply regretted falling in love with him. But then, love was not something that she could control.
"Well, how about it? Would you be willing to end up in hell with me? Once Wendy is dead, my brother will be devastated, and have no will to do anything. The end result would be that the MC Group will be ultimately taken over by me. Marrying me would make you the wife of the boss of Lake City’s Alpha Group, giving you wealth and social status. Also, with Wendy dead and gone, you will no longer have a rival in love, right?"
Zen had to admit that the temptation was just too great. And she did love Christian.
The only reason she had joined him in his organization was to be closer to him.
In the past, believing that Wendy was dead, she had stayed by Christian’s side,
harboring a sliver of hope. She had hoped that, one day, he might fall in love with her. But now, Wendy had come back alive. Although Christian loved Wendy, he hated Michael more.
To make Michael suffer, he was even willing to sacrifice the woman he loved by personally scheming to send her to her death.
Now, if Wendy were really dead...
