Chapter 146: Last Trick

Wendy became so angry with Jil, she felt like she was about to have a heart attack. But Jill stood there and waited for her reply. Jill was laughing at Wendy’s reaction inside and thought to herself, "Let’s see how long you can keep this up for!"

"Wendy, I’ll count to three. If you don’t reply to me by the time I finish counting, I’ll take it that you don’t want to be with him anymore."

She started, "Three!"

"Two!"

Jill’s counting down reminded Wendy of the time she had been kidnapped five years ago.

The kidnapper had also given Michael three seconds to choose. But he chose Yvonne in the end.

She began to clench her fists tightly. She had returned to Lake City to take revenge. She had even tried to run Michael over with her car. For the sake of her twins, she could put this hatred aside and return to Rheinsville City. But she simply couldn’t put aside what happened five years ago and would never forget what happened either.

"One!" freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

After Jill finished her countdown, Wendy raised her voice and said shrilly, "Impossible! I can never be with Michael ever again!"

Jill raised an eyebrow at the change in Wendy’s countenance. Wendy looked highly agitated now.

"Jill, listen to me. Michael Lucas is not a good man. Since you haven’t really fallen for him, then you can still let go of him now before it’s too late," Wendy began to persuade Jill. "l loved him too much back then and that’s how I ended up in such dire straits. I was lucky to have been saved by your father and gave birth to my twins. But you might not be as lucky as I was. I will not stand by the sidelines and watch you get hurt."

"How do you know if I’d get hurt?" Jill looked back innocently at Wendy. "It wasn’t easy for me to find a man I’m even remotely interested in. So, even if I get hurt in the end, I’m willing to give it a shot."

With that, Jill turned and walked towards the office door, deliberately leaving one last comment, "I’ll call you out for a celebration once I get together with Michael."

After Jill walked out, Wendy felt at a loss. Jill was clearly refusing to listen to her.

Should she tell Timothy about it? But Jill wasn’t together with Michael at all. If she told Timothy about this now, he would probably fly straight to Lake City to knock some sense into Jill.

If this matter blew up, it’ll be very bad for Jill’s reputation as well. Jill didn’t seem to care, so Wendy felt obliged to care about it for her.

Also, Timothy and Jill weren’t on the best terms to begin with. Wendy didn’t want to worsen their relationship.

She really didn’t know what to do at all.

After Jill walked out of Wendy’s office, she continued with her move.

Once she had finished moving all her things into her new office, she walked into Michael’s office.

After closing the door behind her, she said, "Wendy was so angry and tried so hard to talk me out of it."

"Then what happened?" Honestly, Michael didn’t really think it was a good idea to provoke Wendy like that. But he couldn’t come up with a better idea either. No matter what he did, Wendy’s attitude towards him never changed. And after that incident with Yonina at the mansion as well as that paternity test report fiasco, she might not even entertain his grandmother anymore.

He didn’t have a choice but to take a gamble. He was hoping that Wendy would get jealous. But if she didn’t get jealous. then he really didn’t know what else to do.

"So, I just made her even angrier," said Jill. "But she’s a real stubborn one. Despite being so angry, she still insisted that it’s impossible between the two of you."

Michael’s expression fell after hearing that.

"I’ve got one last trick up my sleeve. If even this one doesn’t work, then I think you should really give up," Jill said to Michael before sighing quietly.

Jill didn’t really understand Wendy. It didn’t help that Wendy was so much older as well. But Wendy had no lack of suitors during her five years in Rheinsville City. Todd was so outstanding too, but Wendy never gave him a chance.

That alone made Jill feel that someone else was occupying that special place in Wendy’s heart. Back then, she didn’t know who it was. After coming to Lake City, she realized that this person was Michael.

She didn’t know what happened between the two of them back then that made their relationship so complicated, but since Wendy was willing to return to Lake City and Michael was still in love with her and wanted her back, she decided to help them out.

As for how this supposed help would turn out. she wasn’t sure either.

After she moved desks, Jill turned up her bold behavior by a notch.

Everyone in the office gossiped about Michael and Jill often and noticed that Jill would often walk into Michael’s office for no apparent reason. At lunchtime, Jill would pull Michael out of his office to eat.

After work, Jill would get Michael to send her home.

Also, Jill would prepare tea and cut some fruits for Michael in the afternoons. Once she brought those things into Michael’s office, she wouldn’t come out again until at least half an hour or even an hour later.

Wendy was right next door, so she knew that Jill had been entering Michael’s office very frequently and constantly felt the urge to haul Jill right out. But so what if she did that? She would end up saying the same things to Jill as she did the last time, and Jill wasn’t having any of it.

At the same time, Michael behaved like he didn’t know how to say no to Jill.

When Jill called him out to lunch, he went with her. When she took his car home after work, he followed her home. When she brought him tea, he never chased her away.

After some time, Wendy finally couldn’t take it anymore. She slammed her documents down on the table and stormed into Michael’s office angrily.

Jill was just saying very suggestively to Michael, "After you send me home today, don’t leave."

She heard Wendy come in, so she turned to look at Wendy. But there was no trace of guilt on her face at all. Instead, she was beaming from ear to ear.

She was also leaning very close to Michael and was even holding out a slice of orange as if to feed him. But when Michael saw Wendy come in, he stood up immediately and moved away from Jill, as if he had been caught doing something he shouldn’t have.

"Looks like the two of you have advanced so quickly, someone’s staying the night?" Wendy scoffed angrily and pointed a finger at Michael. "Michael Lucas, I’m warning you, don’t you dare lay a finger on Jill. If her father finds out, he won’t let you off either."

"Wendy, I really don’t understand why you’re so angry," Jill tried to trap Wendy with her words again. "Just like what I said before, if you want him back, I’ll leave him alone. But if you don’t then I don’t think it’s reasonable for you to force us apart."

"Be quiet!" shouted Wendy furiously. "If you weren’t like a sister to me, I wouldn’t have cared!"

"It’ll be better if you didn’t treat me like your sister then," Jill sighed unhappily.

She looked at Wendy and said, "Tell you what. Since we’re as close as sisters, I’ll give you one last chance. Michael is still going to send me home after work today. If you come to my place and take him away, I won’t harass him anymore. But if you don’t come, I’m not giving you any more chances."

Wendy turned to look at Michael and thought that he might say something. But he seemed to be in agreement with Jill and just hung his head quietly.

Jill was slowly trying to corner Wendy with every step she took.

Since her attempts at flirting and spending time with Michael hadn’t worked out, she decided to pull this one last trick.

If Wendy didn’t appear at her place, then there was nothing else Jill could do for Michael. She would persuade Michael to give up if this didn’t work.

***

After work that day, Jill still got into Michael’s car.

Wendy was surprised that things had gotten to this point so quickly, but Jill had been very aggressive, so it made sense.

The strange part was why Michael never refused her advances even once.

Wendy had thought about whether these two were trying to trick her, but she didn’t want to bet on that and didn’t dare to just leave Jill to her own devices either.

Jill was only 23. If it turned out that Jill was serious about Michael and dived straight into this relationship, she was definitely going to get hurt.

Timothy had saved her and her two children, and he had put in so much effort to teach and train her. That’s how she had gotten so far in life in the first place.

Jill was Timothy’s only daughter, so she really couldn’t just watch Jill walk into the fire like that.

So, even though she felt that things might not really be what they seemed, she followed them anyway.

Her car followed them all the way until Michael’s car turned into the estate where Jill was living. Wendy knew Jill’s address. It wasn’t far from where she was living herself. She just hadn’t had the time to visit her place.

She didn’t expect her first visit to Jill’s place to be under such circumstances.

Then, she watched Jill get out of the car, hooked her arm around Michael’s and smiled brightly at him.

She kept her distance from them and waited till they had walked into the elevator before pressing the button for the next one.

Once upstairs, she stood outside Jill’s door and stared at the shut door in front of her.

She raised a hand to press the doorbell, then put it down again.

Should she go in or not? But on what grounds? As Jill’s older sister? But she wasn’t really Jill’s older sister, so that might not work out.

As Michael’s wife? Was that the only way?

After she had fallen into the sea five years ago, she had decided to forsake that identity forever.

She was now Corrine Swift, a woman who had no ties to Michael.

Inside the house, Jill poured two glasses of red wine and passed one to Michael.

She smiled and said, "Let’s celebrate our upcoming success."

But Michael couldn’t seem to squeeze a smile out. He felt bad lying to Wendy and felt even more apologetic toward her.

"Why aren’t you drinking?" Jill seemed to be able to read his mind and said, "Don’t feel bad about lying to Wendy. She’s the stubborn sort, so if you don’t push her into a corner, she’s never admitting her feelings. But of course, she might still choose to stubbornly refuse to admit her true feelings. In any case, this is our last shot, so we’ll just play by ear."

His expression was still grim as he picked up the wine glass and took a big gulp.

Jill knew that Wendy was right outside her door. But even after a long time had passed, Wendy still hadn’t pressed that doorbell yet.

Jill took her phone out and took a picture of herself drinking with Michael and sent it to Wendy.

Since Wendy was outside the door, it meant that she did intend to come into the house. She just needed that extra push, so Jill was going to give her that.

When Wendy received the photo, her already grim expression grew even grimmer.

She raised her hand and hit that doorbell.

"Coming..." Jill put her glass down and walked Over to open the door.

Wendy breathed a sigh of relief when she saw that Jill was still properly clothed.

"Hello, Wendy. You came after all." Jill moved aside to let Wendy walk in and said, "Since you’re here, I’ll keep my end of the bargain and I won’t go after Michael Lucas anymore."

Wendy peered into the house, but she was blocked by one of the walls and couldn’t see Michael.
