Chapter 136: The Biggest Laughing Stock Of The City
Wendy’s gaze soon fell on Yonina. Why was she here?
Everyone was at a loss when they saw Wendy.
"Yonina happened to pass by, so she thought she’d say hello. She’s leaving already," Mrs. Lucas quickly explained the situation first as she forced herself to smile. But Mrs. Lucas’ explanation only made Wendy’s expression slowly darken.
Yonina happened to pass by? What sort of reason was that?
The Lucas mansion was deep within an area filled with other large mansions. Driving in from the main road alone took quite a long time.
How could anybody possibly be just passing by? But Wendy wasn’t going to point out these obvious loopholes. What the Lucas family did had nothing to do with her in the first place.
Winnie was surprised to see Wendy in the house and couldn’t help but glance at Michael. No wonder he had agreed to come home so readily when she called him the day before and came back first thing this morning. So, it was all for the sake of Wendy.
Since there was a threat in the house, Winnie took hold of Yonina’s hand and deliberately said with a smile, "Yonina’s my guest."
Wendy detected the provoking tone in Winnie’s voice and smiled amusedly. She said flatly, "There’s no need for anybody to explain anything to me since I’m just a guest. I’ve already baked the cake I promised Grandmother, and you’ve got another guest here, so Jake and I shall take our leave now."
She stretched her hand out towards Jake, and he immediately let go of Mrs. Lucas and ran over to take his mother’s hand.
"Wendy..." Michael and Mrs. Lucas called out at the same time.
Michael explained, "Wendy, I didn’t know Miss Collins would be coming today. Since she’s my mother’s guest, she should be the one in charge of entertaining her. You’re not a guest. You’re a member of the Lucas family, so there’s no reason for you to leave."
"He’s right, Wendy," Mrs. Lucas chimed in. "It wasn’t easy for me to finally see little Jake. If you leave just like that, I’d be so upset."
"If she wants to leave, she can go ahead," snorted Winnie. "If she doesn’t like staying here, then it’s not appropriate for you to force her to stay."
"Mom!" Michael was thoroughly disappointed with his mother and stared at her frostily. "I’ve said this many times before stop interfering in my matters!"
"Michael Lucas! How dare you speak to me like this! You... " Winnie pointed a finger at Michael and was ready to give him a good dressing down. But before she could continue, Yonina said, "I really have another appointment, so I’ll take my leave first."
The situation was so awkward she didn’t want to stay here even one second longer. This time, she turned so quickly that Winnie couldn’t grab hold of her and walked out as fast as she could. freewēbnoveℓ.com
Winnie ran after her and said, "Yonina, let me walk you out."
Once she had caught up with Yonina, she started apologizing, "I’m so sorry, Yonina. I didn’t know Wendy Stewart was in the house today. If I had known about it, I wouldn’t have allowed her to upset you like this."
"Auntie Winnie, I can see that Mr. Lucas is still very devoted to Corrine. Since he still loves Corrine so much, I think we should stop talking about making both of us an item," said Yonina as she shook her head.
"That’s not true. Michael is just bewitched by Wendy," said Winnie. "Wendy hid in another country for five whole years, and now she’s suddenly back? She even tried to knock Michael down the last time! This woman is clearly back to take revenge on Michael. As his mother, I can’t possibly just sit and watch as Wendy hurts my son, can I? Yonina, you’re my ideal daughter-in-law. Wendy Stewart simply can’t compare to you."
Yonina had heard a little about what happened between Wendy and Michael back then. In fact, she had paid the Lucas family a visit precisely because she knew about how Wendy had tried to knock Michael down.
She thought that after this incident, Michael would completely give up on Wendy. But to her surprise, Michael didn’t give up and became even more protective of Wendy instead.
Before Wendy had come out and seen all of them in the living room, Michael had even taken the trouble to speak to her personally.
She understood very clearly at that point that it was going to be very difficult for her to break their relationship. So, she sighed and said, "I think it’s better not to force anyone to love someone they don’t. Since Corrine is indeed Wendy, then that means his wife has returned. So, I think it’s best that you accept her instead. After all, she has a child with Mr. Lucas too."
"Who cares about that child?!" Winnie’s tone of voice turned harsh. "I don’t know whose bastard child is that! When she got pregnant five years ago, Michael brought her home so happily. But after he saw the report from the gynecologist, he fell out with her immediately. Michael never told me the details, but I can tell that he reacted that way because the child isn’t his. "
The child isn’t his? Yonina was surprised by this revelation.
If that was the case, Yonina could understand why Winnie didn’t like Wendy. So, it turned out that Wendy had an extramarital affair back then. And if that was true, perhaps she stood a chance after all.
"Wendy Stewart is a wicked woman, to begin with. She got to marry Michael only because she drugged him. Otherwise, how would someone with her status possibly marry my son? My son was one of the most sought-after bachelors in this city, so he really ought to have married a daughter from a family that’s just as wealthy and influential as ours." Winnie decided that since she had already dropped one bombshell on Yonina, she might as well tell her the entire story.
Winnie’s words certainly flabbergasted Yonina. Before this, she hadn’t really taken note of Michael and Wendy’s past. She had only started to take note of Michael after Winnie began trying to matchmake the two of them. But by the time that happened, Michael was supposed to be a widower, so she didn’t hear much about what happened before that.
"I see... " Yonina looked down slightly as if she was in deep thought.
"Now you know why I don’t like Wendy Stewart. Which mother-in-law would like a daughter-in-law like her?" said Winnie patiently as she held onto Yonina’s hand.
"I didn’t know there was so much more to the story," said Yonina. "But Mr. Lucas clearly still has feelings for Wendy. That’s a fact that will be hard to change."
"What’s so hard about that? Michael is just feeling guilty towards Wendy, that’s all. But given Wendy’s current attitude towards him, I’m sure his guilt will be worn down sooner or later," said Winnie. "Come to think of it, I really don’t understand why Michael feels so apologetic and guilty towards her in the first place. I really don’t understand what my son is thinking about at all."
"I think I’d better go. I’ll talk to you another day," Yonina smiled faintly and spoke in a polite yet distant manner
"Of course, of course! The next time you come here, I’ll make sure you don’t run into Wendy," promised Winnie.
Yonina was feeling increasingly awkward by the second. Winnie made it sound like Yonina was a mistress afraid of running into her lover’s spouse.
She had never had to suffer such an insult in her life. But when she thought about what her father had told her before she left the ho
She sighed inwardly. She wasn’t going to be able to carry out the mission her father had given her.
Her smile faded as she nodded quietly and walked away.
When Winnie went back into the house, she saw that Wendy and Mrs. Lucas were still in the living room.
It seemed like Mrs. Lucas had successfully persuaded Wendy to stay behind after all. Actually, Wendy didn’t want to stay at all. Mrs. Lucas had held her back.
Michael didn’t dare to pull her back since he knew Wendy would get angry, so Mrs. Lucas did it for him instead and refused to let Wendy leave.
Wendy didn’t know what to do either.
When she saw Yonina earlier, her heart was thrown into confusion.
Mrs. Lucas had invited her to the mansion, but Yonina turned up as well.
Many people had now quietly acknowledged the fact that Corrine was actually Wendy, Michael’s ex-wife. At the same time, Yonina was someone whom Winnie had been trying to matchmake Michael with for the longest time. But today, both of them had run into each other in the same house.
Wendy believed that Mrs. Lucas and Michael really didn’t know Yonina would turn up today. They wouldn’t have wanted something this embarrassing to happen.
In fact, she believed even Winnie had no idea that she was going to turn up today either. But this happened anyway.
She really didn’t think it was appropriate for her to stay on after that awkward situation. But now, Yonina ended up leaving first, while Mrs. Lucas insisted on getting her to stay, so she had no choice but to follow Mrs. Lucas back into the living room.
Winnie saw that Wendy and Jake were seated on both sides of Mrs. Lucas and her expression instantly darkened. She said in a sarcastic voice, "So, your guest gets to stay because she’s a guest, but my guest ends up storming out because she’s so angry. I’m the wife of the head of the family, but I don’t get to call any shots at all. How pathetic!"
It was better if she hadn’t said anything at all. Mrs. Lucas slammed the coffee table with her palm and reprimanded her, "For as long as I’m still alive, you don’t get to call any shots in this house!"
Winnie was shocked. She didn’t expect Mrs. Lucas to react so violently.
"Michael has a wife and a son, so why must you insist on dragging a completely unrelated person into the picture? If you want to matchmake Yonina and Michael, you should ask the two of them what they think first! You’ve made us a laughing stock today!"
"If others find out what happened today, everyone is going to laugh at us! Do you know what they’d say? The wife and another potential partner were in the house at the same time! They’d think that the men of the Lucas family have a habit of fooling around!"
"Also, Yonina is the precious daughter of the Collins family! Even if you’re alright about your son having a mistress, you’d better pick the right woman to be a mistress! Did you think Yonina’s in the same league as that vamp that Anthony keeps? How does offending the Collins family do us any good?!"
"When my son had an affair, I felt really bad for you and I always stood up for you because you are Anthony’s lawfully wedded wife. Why aren’t you the same when it comes to your own son?"
"Wendy is Michael’s lawfully wedded wife too! So why do you keep trying to separate them?"
"Besides, Jake is already five. Even if you don’t care about your son, you ought to show some concern for your grandson. Would you rather your grandson grows up in a broken family?"
Winnie fell silent for a long time after Mrs. Lucas finished speaking.
Just when everyone thought Winnie had been persuaded by Mrs. Lucas, she suddenly looked up very solemnly at Mrs. Lucas and said, "Mother, since we’ve come to this point, then let’s settle this once and for all."
Winnie glared at Wendy and Jake with great displeasure in her eyes and said, "You and Michael believe that this boy is a descendant of the Lucas family. That’s your personal opinion, so I can’t change your mind if you continue to think that way. But five years ago, we were all present. Michael’s reaction clearly showed that this boy isn’t his. I don’t know why all of you suddenly think that this boy is Michael’s five years later! If you want me to acknowledge this child, then I want to see the paternity test that proves their relationship! The Lucas family is one of the most prominent families in this city! If we end up acknowledging some kid from absolutely nowhere as our own, we’d definitely become the biggest laughing stock of the city!"
