Chapter 130: Letter Of Resignation
But no matter how intelligent Jake was, he was only a child. Wendy had not shared with others about her revenge plans because she did not want to involve anybody. Moreover, Jake was her son. She was even more unwilling to get him involved.
But from what Jake had said, it had become clear to Wendy that her revenge was not only hurting Leah, but also Jake.
She was allowing him to follow her and live in her bitterness.
The scariest part was that Jake had never let on how much he already knew to Wendy. She had no idea.
Wendy reached out to hold Jake’s hand. She pursed her lips and for a while, she did not know what to say.
After a long pause, Wendy asked, "Jake, so did you know from the very start who Michael Lucas is?"
Jake nodded. Since he had already told her that he knew, there was no need to hide from her. "I know that he is my and Leah’s father."
"Well then, what do you think of him as your father?" Wendy asked. But what she really wanted to ask was whether Jake had ever wanted to acknowledge Michael as his father.
Jake had never said in front of her that he missed his father, but Leah had often asked who their father was. Jake might not have asked because he was more mature, but that did not mean the thought did not cross his mind.
Wendy thought, there should not be anyone who did not want their father.
"I have always said, I will like whatever you like, Mommy. And I will hate whatever you hate," Jake replied. His voice sounded like a child’s but also determined. "Mommy, don’t worry, I will not acknowledge him."
Wendy felt a huge weight lifted off her heart when Jake said that last line. But at the same time, her sense of guilt also deepened.
She began to wonder, what had she gained from taking revenge? To be separated from her daughter and for her son to live in hate? Those qualities were not what she wanted. But, when she thought about all that Michael had done to her five years ago, she was unable to take it lying down.
She held Jake’s small body in her arms and started to have an emotional breakdown. Her tears kept flowing while she held Jake tightly. "Jake, tell me, what should I do?" she asked.
"Mommy, are you really asking me for my opinion?" Jake asked.
"Um..." There were not many people Wendy could confide in.
While Jake was young, he was the only person Wendy could confide in now.
"To be honest, I don’t want you to continue taking revenge," Jake said. He continued with his serious analysis. "While we were still in Rheinsville City, you were very busy, but I know that you were living life to the fullest. Every weekend, you would take Leah and me out to play and the smile on your face was genuine. But since moving to Lake City, I haven’t seen you smile like you used to. If taking revenge cannot bring you happiness, I want you to give it up."
Jake had already said this earlier Hearing it twice still did not help to clear the messy emotions in Wendy’s heart.
Five years ago, it was revenge that had given Wendy the motivation to continue living after she was rescued from the ocean.
After having her son and daughter, these two precious little angels were the ones who had become her motivation to live. frёewebηovel.cѳm
Perhaps none of this was worth it?
She let go of Jake. She looked at his eyes which were deep and heavy. He was becoming more and more like Michael.
Michael’s words sprang into her mind. How he had found out about his father’s affair when he was ten years old.
If she continued with her revenge, would Jake follow in Michael’s footsteps and grow up in hatred and bitterness too?
Wendy had spent the entire night thinking.
Perhaps she had been wrong from the start. It was her obsession with revenge that dragged her down. If it were just her, she did not mind, but she could not let her obsession affect her two children.
Wendy did not sleep at all.
The next day, she sent an email to HG Enterprise’s headquarters.
In that email, she wrote about quitting her role as MC Enterprise’s partner.
She wished to return to HG Enterprise.
She wished to be with Leah and Jake and watch them grow up.
She did not wish for her children to be affected by her own hatred and bitterness.
In less than an hour after she sent the email, Wendy received a call from Timothy Woods. "Mr. Woods..." Wendy’s voice was filled with respect.
She was filled with gratitude to Timothy for saving her and her children, and for being her mentor and grooming her.
"You don’t want to continue working together with MC Enterprise anymore?" Timothy asked. He was surprised after reading her email.
"I am sorry to disappoint you." Wendy’s voice was sorry.
"You were the one who wanted to work with MC Enterprise. But you’ve only been there for two months, and you want to quit? Corrine, you should not take our mentor relationship for granted and be so unprofessional." Over the phone, Timothy sounded a little angry.
Wendy had offered to work with MC Enterprise at first as part of her revenge plan.
Based on her capabilities, she should have had no problems bringing MC Enterprise’s design department up another notch within two years. And the partnership between HG and MC was to monopolize the local market.
They had believed in Wendy’s abilities and agreed that she was the most suitable person for the job. But barely two months had passed, and things had only just gotten on track and Wendy wanted to quit her position.
How could Timothy not be angry?
"I am really sorry. This is because of my own personal problems," Wendy said in a low voice. She did not know how to face her mentor. "I am willing to accept the consequences from the company." Wendy added, "I will accept any consequence."
"You should be very clear about what the partnership between HG and MC entails. This is not a small matter. Though I love you, I don’t have the authority to accept your request directly," Timothy said.
"I understand," Wendy replied.
This partnership was one of the most important deals to the company. Such a decision would need to go through the board of directors.
Timothy was in charge of HG Enterprise, but he alone could not make a decision on behalf of the board of directors.
"Before a decision is made, you are to stay with MC first, all right?" Timothy was starting to sound disappointed in Wendy.
"All right" Wendy nodded.
Wendy did not let her personal emotions affect the company’s partnership. She had also been working hard over the past two months. Under her leadership, MC Enterprise’s design department had improved a lot.
Disappointed as he was, Timothy had groomed her as his mentee. He sighed, "This is such a good chance that you are throwing away. I really don’t understand what you are thinking."
"I am sorry," Wendy apologized again. "Don’t worry. Before the board of directors reaches a decision, I will not let this affect my work."
"I know I don’t have to worry about your work," Timothy said. He sighed again. "Do you know how I felt when I read your email? I was very shocked. But I also know you. I know you must have had your reason for quitting. I will not say anymore. Do your job well and wait for the board of directors’ decision."
"Thank you," she said. Wendy had full trust and gratitude toward her mentor.
Though Wendy had sent out her resignation email, she still had to return to MC Enterprise and continue working there till the board of directors had reached a decision.
She stayed in Rheinsville City for two days as planned, and then brought Jake back to Lake City.
After her leave had ended, Wendy went to work as usual.
She was surprised to find Michael sitting on the sofa waiting for her when she entered her office. Wendy put her bag down and looked at him. "Mr. Lucas, I think you’re in the wrong office," she said.
"l am waiting for you," Michael answered honestly.
Wendy’s eyebrows moved a little when she heard that he was waiting for her. "So, why are you waiting for me?" she asked.
Wendy had sent her resignation email because her determination for taking revenge had wavered. But that did not mean her hatred toward Michael was gone.
She would always remember the hurt he had inflicted on her.
"I received an email from HG," Michael said from the sofa. He raised his head to look at her. He controlled his emotions as best as he could but the tone in his voice betrayed him. "You want to leave MC?" he asked. ƒrēewebnovel.com
Two days ago, Michael had followed Wendy to Rheinsville City out of fear she might disappear with Jake. Now, he was not merely afraid. Because Wendy had officially resigned, it was clear that she intended to leave Lake City.
Michael had received the email from HG last night. After reading it, he could not sleep. He kept thinking about how he could stop her from leaving. He could stay out of her life and not interfere with her personal matters. As long as she remained in MC, remained in Lake City, they could run into each other in the company or somewhere in town.
Even a small nod would satisfy him. But if she were to leave Lake City, it would mean her leaving him completely.
Michael replayed that scenario in his head all night and he refused to accept it.
Wendy laughed at the panic in Michael’s eyes. "Yes, I have tendered my resignation to HG’s headquarters," she said. "There are so many talented people in HG, and I am sure they will send someone better and more suitable than me to work with MC. Mr. Lucas, you do not have to worry about the partnership."
"Wendy..." Michael had lowered his voice further.
There was a very slight trace of fear in his voice.
"You know that is not what I am worried about."
Michael had placed a lot of importance on the partnership with HG Enterprise because when two giants work together, MC Enterprise’s design department would be able to move up to a larger stage. But when he found out that their partner was Wendy, the partnership itself was no longer that important anymore.
Finding the wife he had once lost, she was more important to him than anything else in the world.
Except that he had not considered Wendy’s feelings, and had pursued her too selfishly, causing her to be filled with disdain and dislike toward him.
He had lost his chance to make up to her.
"I am not concerned with what you are worried about," Wendy said without looking at Michael. She continued in an impassioned voice, "Though I am working together with MC Enterprise, my head office is still HG Enterprise, and I will follow whatever is HG’s deployment of manpower."
Wendy then pointed her finger to the door. "Mr. Lucas," she said, "if you have no other matters, please do not disturb me while I work."
Since she had made herself clear that he had overstayed his welcome, if he were to continue staying, she would only be more disgusted by him.
On the other hand, Michael did not wish to leave just like that.
Michael clenched his fists and stood up, looking at her in all seriousness. "Wendy," he said, "l will not let you leave."
"I said, I will follow HG’s manpower deployment," Wendy repeated. "Mr. Lucas, please leave," she said.
Michael had no choice but leave.
