Chapter 124: Buy Jake Some Toys

"No, you can’t" Winnie refused the request right away. "I... my son is very busy. He won’t have the time to come."

Wendy was not intimidated by Winnie, neither would she be by Michael. On the day of the accident, it was true that she ran him over. But it was also true that Michael was harassing Wendy. She had apologized to Mrs. Lucas in the hospital because she felt indebted to Mrs. Lucas, not because she felt that she had done something wrong.

The harm and damage Michael had caused her was not something that could be reversed with a minor car accident.

"We..." the police officer said. "We can’t really determine much just by watching the surveillance footage. It would be best if all the people involved were here to verify the facts."

The moment the police officer finished his sentence, Michael walked into the police station.

He looked solemn as he glanced at Wendy and Winnie. He did not expect Winnie to make an official police report. He pursed his lips as he looked at Wendy. He thought Wendy must be thinking that he was the one who instructed Winnie to make a report.

"Mr. Lucas..." The police officer smiled as he saw Michael. "I’m glad that you are here. This matter..."

"There is nothing more to this case. That night, there was a minor personal dispute between us," Michael said. "My mother was not fully aware of the situation, which is why she filed a report. Sorry to have caused any trouble."

"Not at all, not at all." The police officer wiped the sweat off of his forehead. It was best that the victim did not press any charges, otherwise, they would have a hard time processing this case. The main offense of Wendy having committed a hit-and-run was true.

But if they were to pursue the matter, Michael would not be let off either for harassing Wendy in the first place. They would then have to prosecute them both by law. The most ideal option would be for them to resolve their conflict privately to avoid any major consequences. This case was not that easy to handle. If not for Winnie’s status, they would have asked her to drop the case.

Michael turned and faced Wendy. He looked solemn, though his true emotions were buried deep down inside him. He bowed slightly at her and said, "Apologies." Michael owed the apology to Wendy. It was not just for the night of the accident that had caused her an inconvenience.

It was also for the hurt he had caused her five years ago. With that, Michael turned around to pull Winnie by the hand and left the police station.

"Mother, didn’t I tell you before to not pursue this case anymore?" Michael rubbed the crease between his eyebrows as a headache was forming. He thought Winnie had put things behind her since she had not taken any action for the past few days. Who knew she would come to the police station to make a report after a week?

"Michael, why are you protecting that woman, Wendy?" Winnie had already guessed that Michael would stop her if he knew about it, but she did not expect him to catch wind of it and come so soon. "Do you not know, she was the one who hit you with her car? It almost cost you your life! Why on earth are you still covering for Such a woman?"

"This is my personal matter and I will handle it myself." Michael looked at Winnie and said with a commanding tone, "I hope this does not happen again." After saying his peace, Michael turned and left.

Looking at Michael as he left, Winnie stomped in frustration.

Wendy stepped out of the police station and saw Winnie who was in a rage. She kept a stern expression on her face as she walked past Winnie.

"Wendy Steward, don’t you think that we are done with this matter." Winnie threatened out of fury.

"Of course. It’s not over yet." Wendy gave a faint smile. It seemed like the words were directed at Winnie, but it was actually directed at Michael’s departing figure.

...

By the time Wendy came out of the police station, it was already past working hours so she did not return to the office and instead went straight home.

Zess had already prepared dinner and Jake had returned home from school.

Seated at the dining table, Jake placed some vegetables on Wendy’s plate. "Mummy, you look like you’ve lost weight. Please have another serving."

Wendy smiled at him and nodded. She then took Jake’s favorite chicken wing and placed it on his plate. Jake did not say anything as he peered up at Wendy a few times as they ate. Soon after, Jake tried to probe Wendy, "Mummy, how is the uncle you hit last time?"

Jake had been curious about Michael’s condition but did not get to ask directly as he was afraid that Wendy would be upset with him.

He only dared to ask after a few days. He thought, even if his mother was angry back then, she should feel better by now. Whenever Jake thought back to the accident, he felt a little guilty because he was the one who told Wendy about Michael and Yonina holding hands. He did not expect things to be so serious. Jake was worried about Michael’s condition. If anything was to happen to him, he would feel as if he had committed a sin.

Wendy’s smile faded upon hearing Jake’s question. "Why are you concerned about him?"

Wendy had been denying the fact that Michael was Jake’s biological father. So every time he asked about Michael, she would get anxious that Jake had found out the truth.

Jake looked down at his plate and mumbled, "I... I just thought about him so l asked. After all, mummy hit him last time. I was afraid he was seriously injured."

"Don’t ask too much about adult matters in the future," Wendy added more vegetables onto Jake’s plate and did not continue the conversation.

Jake held on to his spoon in hand as he raised his head to sneak another glance at Wendy. It seemed that Wendy would not tell him anything.

He thought, if that was the case, he needed to find a way to sneak out to visit Michael.

The next day, Jake did not wait for school to end. He said he had a stomach ache and needed to go to the washroom. He played hooky and snuck out of school. He even called Zess, who would pick him up from school daily without fail, to pick him up at a later time. He told her over the phone that he had some activities in school and that he would be released later than usual.

After Jake successfully snuck out, he stood by the road to flag a taxi so that he could go to MC Group. Before he managed to get one, he saw a familiar face. It was the woman who wanted the same dress as Mummy at the mall. It seemed the woman was waiting for him as she started coming towards him.

Yvonne had been loitering around Jake’s school for a few days. She was annoyed by the incident at the mall. She knew she would not have a chance to bring Wendy down anytime soon, so she shifted her focus to Jake. She managed to find out which school Jake was in.

But for the past few days, there was a woman who fetched Jake from school every day so she did not have any chance to get to him. At last, her opportunity came when Jake snuck out before school ended. Jake guessed that Yvonne was after him when he saw her. But he did not want to waste his time on her as he wanted to go to MC to visit Michael.

The moment he saw Yvonne quickening her pace towards him, he waved his hand frantically for a taxi. Finally, a taxi slowed down in front of him. Jake used all his might to open the door.

Just as he was about to climb into the taxi, Yvonne caught up with him. She slammed the taxi door shut and carried him away from the car. freewёbnoνel.com

"Are you boarding or not?" The taxi driver looked at their interactions and asked in an irritated tone.

"No, we are not." Yvonne shook her head and waved him off. "You may go."

"Are you too free? If you are not boarding, then why flag a taxi?" The driver murmured under his breath.

Jake watched as the taxi drove away. He put his hands on his waist unhappily and looked up at the annoying woman in front of him. "What are you doing?" freeweɓnovel.cøm

"Where are you going? Let me send you there, all right?" Yvonne flashed a smile at him. She fished out a lollipop she had prepared from her purse. "Look, what do we have here?"

Jake almost rolled his eyes. She even prepared a lollipop to "lure’ him. Her objective could not be more obvious.

"I am not three years old." Jake raised his hand and signaled with four fingers. "I am already four years old. I don’t eat lollipops."

"Then what do you like?" Yvonne took out a small bag of chips from her purse. Jake shook his head. Yvonne continued bringing out different snacks, biscuits, jelly, gummies, etc.

Jake could tell this lady was well prepared just to entice him. Jake thought he could play along so as to not disappoint her. He looked down at the array of snacks and picked a bag of chips. "I like this one."

Seeing there was finally a snack that Jake liked, Yvonne beamed. She was one step closer to luring Jake away. Soon, Wendy would be on her knees to beg her to return her kid to her. She would then get even with Wendy for the embarrassment Wendy had put her through.

"Oh, you like this one?" Yvonne asked and smiled at Jake. Jake nodded as he turned to look in the direction of the school. He should not be standing outside the school for too long, otherwise, he would risk getting caught.

Jake took the bag of chips and asked while walking away from the gate, "You are so nice. My mummy would not let me eat these snacks. Mummy is bad."

"Yeah, that’s bad. Kids should be given what they like to eat. Why did your mother not let you eat these?" Yvonne followed behind Jake. "Do you want to come to my house? I have a lot more goodies for you!"

"Really?" Jake’s eyes lit up as he looked up at her. Yvonne nodded immediately, "Yup, for real. Then, do you have toys at your house?" Jake asked gleefully. "My favorite is Transformers But Mummy doesn’t buy them for me."

"I have. I have all the toys in my house."

"I don’t believe it," Jake frowned. "How can your house have all the toys?"

"I’m telling the truth. You will know when we reach my house."

"I still don’t believe you. Unless we buy some toys now, I won’t go to your house," Jake pouted intentionally.

Yvonne was annoyed by Jake’s request, but she kept it hidden. She smiled at Jake and said, "Okay. I take you to a toy store."

"I know of a store that sells the toys I want." Jake was elated when Yvonne agreed to buy toys for him. He clapped enthusiastically and tugged on Yvonne’s hand. "I can bring you there."

Jake brought Yvonne to a high-end toy empire.

He picked out many toys that were mostly pricey and filled the shopping cart to the brim. The owner of the store was delighted when he saw the young paymaster. At the cashier, the owner said, "Hello. The total would be seven thousand two hundred dollars. How would you like to Pay?"

Yvonne’s eyes widened when she heard the final amount for the toys. This brat picked out seven thousand two hundred dollars worth of toys?
