Chapter 114: Always Run Into The Person You Most Want To Avoid

"Grandmother..." Michael spoke up the moment the call went through. freēwēbηovel.c૦m

"Michael, how is your relationship with Wendy now?" said Mrs. Lucas, who still missed Wendy very much. "When can I see her and my grandson?"

She already knew that Wendy had returned to Lake City with a child, and that Michael was indeed the biological father. Even though she did not understand what exactly had happened five years ago, she believed both Wendy and Michael.

Since her grandson had claimed that the child belonged to him, there was no doubt in her mind that the boy was a true descendant of the Lucas family. The truth was that Mrs. Lucas would never have suspected Wendy of cheating on Michael if she had not personally admitted it to her five years ago.

She believed in her own judgment and had always known Wendy to be a good and respectable woman.

Her question put Michael in a difficult position.

Pursing his lips, he said in a low voice, "Grandmother, I’m still not really on good terms with Wendy yet. It might take a long time."

Mrs. Lucas was heard sighing. She said, "Why don’t you pass the phone to Wendy? Let me talk to her on your behalf."

"Alright, Grandmother, give me a moment," said Michael. Since his grandmother had personally made such a request, he saw no choice but to comply. Holding his phone, he walked into the adjacent office. In any case, it was convenient to do so since their offices were right beside each other.

When Wendy spotted Michael, she said unhappily, "Mr. Lucas, don’t you know how to knock on the door before entering?"

When Michael heard her, he took a few steps back until he was outside her office. Knocking on the door, he said politely, "Miss Corrine, can I please enter?"

"If it’s not regarding an official business matter, I urge you not to disturb me during working hours," said Wendy as she glanced at the time and saw that it was almost time to get off work.

She figured that Michael was probably here at this time because he was waiting for her to go back to the apartment together. Even though they drove in their own respective cars, he always followed behind her, which she found annoying.

Michael took big strides into her office. Holding up his phone, he said, "Grandmother wants to talk to you."

When Wendy heard that, she swallowed her insults. It had been some time since she returned to Lake City, but she had not gone to visit Mrs. Lucas at all. Looking up at Michael, she said, "Who’s that?"

The truth was that she really did want to talk to Mrs. Lucas. However, she had previously told Michael that she was suffering from amnesia.

She could lie her way out of this and tell him that she still remembered some things from her past, but she was sure that Michael would only become more convinced that she was faking her amnesia if she admitted to knowing who Mrs. Lucas was. Although she had met up with Zen Tanner, her friend now worked in Christian Lucas’s company and was unlikely to tell Michael about anything they discussed.

On the other hand, Mrs. Lucas was a completely different story. She would definitely take her grandson’s side.

"Wendy, you don’t even remember who Grandmother is even though she cares about you so much?" said Michael with an incomprehensible expression on his face.

"Michael, you can put me on loudspeaker," Mrs. Lucas’s voice was heard through the phone. Michael did as requested and turned the loudspeaker on.

"Wendy..." Mrs. Lucas’s voice immediately rang out. "My dear Wendy, I know that we let you down back then. You must have suffered a lot over the past five years. I’ve been thinking about going over to your apartment to see you for a few days now, but I haven’t been in good health recently, and it’s hard for me to travel. I really want to see you, can you please come and visit me at the mansion?"

Wendy found it difficult to reject Mrs. Lucas’s request. However, she was standing here today as Corrine, not Wendy. She knew that Mrs. Lucas would be devastated if she rejected her, but at the same time, agreeing to go back to the mansion was akin to admitting who she really was.

Just as Wendy was deliberating on what to say, Mrs. Lucas’s voice came over the phone again. She said, "it’s my birthday next Monday. At this age, I don’t think I have many years left ahead of me. I’d be so happy if you could visit me next Monday. But if you’re not able, I can go to you. I’m so happy to know that you’re still alive, and I just wanted to see for myself whether you’re doing well."

Wendy did remember when Mrs. Lucas’s birthday was. The elderly woman was turning 80 years old the next week. The way Mrs. Lucas had phrased her request made it impossible for Wendy to refuse, especially since she even offered to come to Wendy if she did not want to go back to the mansion. Wendy still remembered just how much the elderly woman had cared for her in the past when no one else did. Moreover, it did not seem like a good idea for Mrs. Lucas to travel out of her house at this age.

Glancing at Michael, she said, "Mrs. Lucas, my name is Corrine. I think you must be mistaken about my identity, just like Mr. Lucas is. But if you don’t mind, I will attend your birthday party next Monday."

"Why would I mind? I’ve been longing to see you again," said Mrs. Lucas, sounding so clearly more emotional and relaxed after hearing Wendy’s response. "I’ll wait for you next week"

"Sure."

Since Wendy had already promised to come over to the mansion to celebrate her birthday, Mrs. Lucas decided not to say anything else. She was afraid that Wendy might change her mind about her decision.

After hanging up, Michael studied Wendy carefully. Smiling, he said, "Wendy, did you really lose your memories?" This was not the first time he had asked her this question.

Wendy knew that her agreeing to go back to the mansion would surely arouse Michael’s suspicion.

However, she was still determined to continue lying about her amnesia. She didn’t see any other way forward.

Looking up at Michael, she said with a sullen face, "I don’t believe that’s any of your business, Mr. Lucas. After all, we are nothing more than colleagues. My design skills should be the only thing that matter to you, right?"

The truth was that Michael did not believe Wendy about her amnesia. But since she was resolved to keep her identity a secret, he decided to play along.

"Yes," said Michael, who understood that he had hurt her just too much. The fact that she had agreed to return to the mansion next week for his grandmother’s birthday was already a step in the right direction. He would continue to work on things between them.

"In that case, please don’t disturb me anymore, Mr. Lucas," said Wendy as she gestured at the door. "I’m very busy."

Michael did not leave. Instead, he took out a credit card and placed it on Wendy’s desk. He said, "Here, you can use this card."

He had given her this card in the past to purchase a birthday present for Mrs. Lucas.

Back then, she had no choice but to take it because she was too broke to afford anything on her own. But now, she no longer needed it.

A shallow smile appeared on her face. She said mockingly, "I earn plenty myself, I don’t need a single cent from you."

"Wendy, what’s mine is also yours. You shouldn’t say that," said Michael in a deep voice. He sounded very sentimental.

However, Wendy treated this as nothing more than a joke. She said, "You can take your credit card back with you, Mr. Lucas. I don’t need it."

Michael did not do as she instructed. He hastily informed her that he had other urgent matters to attend to before turning around and walking out of the room. Wendy looked down at the credit card and found it to be rather ironic.

Dialing Jill’s extension, she said, "Come to my office."

Jill arrived soon after. Wendy pointed at the card on her desk and said, "Take this to Mr. Michael Lucas."

Jill picked up the black card and examined it.

Even though she did not understand the extent of its power, she could tell that it looked exceedingly elegant and clearly indicated wealth. But since Wendy did not want it, she could only take it away.

...

It was already Wednesday, just a few days away from Mrs. Lucas’s birthday. When the weekend came around, Wendy took Jake out to shop for the elderly woman’s birthday present.

Since Mrs. Lucas was fond of jade accessories, she went to Chaumet jewelry shop and picked out a pair of jade earrings. After purchasing Mrs. Lucas’s present, she went to the mall to buy some clothes for Jake. They did not bring too many clothes with them to Lake City. Since Jake was about to start attending kindergarten, Wendy decided to buy a few new outfits for him.

Jake, on the other hand, was picking out clothes for his mother. He saw a dress that he thought suited her perfectly and was just about to call Out to her when someone else took it away.

Looking up, he saw that the culprit was a woman. He said politely, "Excuse me, I saw this dress first."

"You’re just a kid, why are you looking at women’s clothes?" the woman snorted and said coldly. She sounded extremely displeased.

"Why are you so rude?" Jake planted his hands on his hips and was just about to give the woman a piece of his mind when she suddenly screamed out, "Wendy Stewart!"

Wendy was casually looking through the clothes on display when she heard her name being called. She turned around and saw Yvonne Taylor. Just like the old saying went, you always run into the person you most want to avoid, indeed. However, Wendy was no longer the same person that she was five years ago. She did not fear Yvonne in the least bit.

"Mummy, do you know her?" said Jake unhappily. "She’s so rude, she took away the dress that I wanted to get for you."

When Yvonne heard Jake address Wendy as his mother, she stared at her, and then at him. Her eyes were filled with disbelief as she said, "You managed to keep the child?"

Wendy was alone at MC Enterprise the last time Yvonne came by the office. She firmly believed that it was impossible for Wendy’s baby to survive the kidnapping ordeal, even if his mother did. It was simply a miracle for both mother and son to be alive right now.

Yvonne hated Wendy more than anything for taking Michael away from her and giving birth to his child. if this went on, it was only a matter of time before they would reunite as a family. She glanced at the dress she was holding and barked angrily, "I want this dress!"

She was not genuinely interested in this dress, but since Wendy wanted it, she felt obligated to take it away from her. Wendy was suddenly reminded of how Yvonne tried to snatch the jade bracelet she picked out at Chaumet jewelry shop five years ago. She had been shopping for Mrs. Lucas’s birthday present that day, too. The truth was that Wendy could not really be bothered with Yvonne because she was simply too insignificant. In her perspective, Yvonne did not even possess the qualifications to be treated as her rival. However, she would not back off if Yvonne tried to provoke her.

"Jake, let’s try other dresses," said Wendy as she took Jake’s hand. "These ones over here look great, too." ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

Wendy picked out a few dresses, planning to try them on. Still fuming, Yvonne reached out and snatched the dresses from her hands. She handed everything to the sales assistant and said, "I want these dresses too."

"Go ahead, I don’t like them that much anyway," said Wendy, pretending to look upset. Then, she casually grabbed a few other dresses. This time, Yvonne took them from her immediately.

A delighted smile appeared on Yvonne’s face when she saw Wendy’s disappointed look. However, Yvonne was behaving like a complete lunatic in Wendy’s eyes.

Wendy continued to act like she felt bothered about this situation. She picked out a few other dresses. Just as she had expected, Yvonne snatched them right out of her hands and headed to the counter. By now, Yvonne had accumulated a huge pile of clothes. Each dress that Wendy had selected cost at least a thousand dollars. She believed that Yvonne had racked up a bill worth an enormous amount of money by now.

Looking Yvonne up and down, she saw that the clothes she was wearing were no longer as expensive and extravagant as five years ago.

Wendy already suspected that Yvonne would not be able to afford all the dresses that she had picked out. A smug smile appeared on her face as she waited to see what would happen next.
