Valen’s eyes snapped open, feeling incredible soreness all over his body as he kicked open the cracked hatch of the emergency capsule.
Upon leaping out, he didn’t have the time to carefully observe his surroundings before he was greeted with the sight of numerous guns pointed at him.
"Raise your hands where I can see them, and move to the side," a muscular man clad in a black uniform ordered as he used his rifle to indicate.
Valen did as he was told, not saying anything. Although he currently wore the Wind Elemental Power Suit in its armour form, and those old-fashioned guns from whatever century couldn’t harm him, he was still in a foreign land and did not want to offend anyone before gaining a clear understanding of his unforeseen situation.
The sun hung in the sky, its soft radiance illuminating the expanse... and also everyone’s faces.
’It seems the sun has just risen, so that means it’s early morning. So I have been unconscious for the entire night, huh?’
The muscular man gestured for his companions to keep an eye on Valen while he carefully approached the emergency capsule pressed into the ground from the crash.
After inspecting its smoky interior and finding nothing out of place, he turned his attention to Valen and asked in a threaning tone:
"Your air shuttle looks incredibly damaged. What destroyed it, and what force are you from?"
Immediately, the other men similarly clad in black uniforms raised their firearms higher and pointed them at Valen, ready to kill him if he answered wrongly.
Valen’s heart raced behind his chest, but he suppressed it and calmly responded:
"I’m not from any force. My friends and I discovered this emergency capsule within the crash site of a spaceship. This wasn’t the only one, so we decided to pilot it for fun, but then I got knocked out of the sky by the shockwaves from a battle between two flying creatures. I don’t even know how I survived."
The muscular man glanced at one of his companions and nodded at him.
His companion — a bulky man with bushy eyebrows — stepped forward and began to carefully observe the dents on the emergency capsule. Then he moved to the engine and other parts.
A few minutes later, he returned and nodded.
"From my analysis, the emergency capsule seems to have been damaged by a burst of wind, which is similar to the soundwave attack of the Wind Falcons, so his claim about being collateral damage in a battle between flying creatures should be 80–90% correct."
The muscular man acknowledged this with a nod, then turned to face Valen once more.
His tone became considerably softer as he said:
"Boy, you’re really gutsy. To think you would dare pilot an emergency capsule in the sky. Even the Genesis Organisation has to be careful with their research into spaceships because of the Wind Falcons." freewёbnoνel.com
Valen didn’t know what to say. From everyone’s indifference towards the massive flying bird that destroyed the Void Ship, it seemed that these birds were a common sight — that was if they were speaking the truth, of course.
Although he seemed to be out of danger, Valen remained cautious. The Astral Veil must have prohibited entry into this place for a reason, so he couldn’t let down his guard.
"Captain, how should we deal with him? We can leave him behind, right? What if he’s lying and is actually from House Blackthorn?" A man with tawny skin stepped forward from the troops, addressing the muscular man.
The Captain’s expression darkened. It wasn’t only him. The troops behind him also placed their hands on the triggers, ready to fire.
Valen’s muscles tensed. He was ready to activate his Power Suit at any moment.
The Captain showed a hesitant expression as he fell into deep thought.
Then he raised a hand and said:
"Forget it. We’ll take him with us and let the Count decide his fate."
The tawny-skinned man and another soldier immediately stepped forward and handcuffed Valen’s hands, then stood on both sides of him.
The Captain shot a look at the bulky man and instructed:
"You are to stay here and take anything that can be recycled and reused, then come to our campsite and regroup with us. The Genesis Organisation doesn’t share the products of its research with anyone, so this capsule would be worth quite a lot. If only we could take it with us. Sigh. But we are still several days away from the nearest county."
The bulky man also sighed.
"If we could bring it with us, we would’ve surely gained a lot of merits. What a wasted chance this is."
The Captain waved it off.
"Enough talking. Get to work. Anselm, Aldric, Geoffrey, and Dietrich will stay behind with you. I need you to be done in twenty minutes. If you aren’t back at the campsite by then, I’ll treat it as though you were killed by House Blackthorn and we’ll continue our journey."
The bulky man quickly nodded and took off his bags, removing several tools from one of them.
Valen, who had been silently listening to their conversation, found himself being pulled along by the men beside him as they marched away from the crash site.
With the immediate danger gone, Valen began to observe his surroundings in greater detail. He found that he was in the wilderness, with everything around him consisting of dry earth and hot winds.
He carefully scrutinised the weapons of the troops and discovered they looked old-fashioned—like the type used before the apocalypse back on Greenfield.
Also, the handcuffs they used on him weren’t made from the same strange metal people on Greenfield Planet used to make theirs. With his current strength, he could easily break the handcuffs and free himself, but he decided against it even though he felt uncomfortable.
He wanted to follow these troops for a while and gain a better understanding of this forbidden zone.
Only with sufficient information could he survive.
It was at this moment that he remembered that, during his drowsy state, he seemed to have heard a notification from the system about a quest.
He hadn’t listened to the full details and had also cancelled the projection when he woke up.
Quests issued by the Humanity System were certainly rare, but they still existed.
Their rewards were extremely lucrative as well, depending on the rank of the quest.
Now that he was sober, he wanted to take a proper look at it.
But at that moment, the soldier to his right — who happened to be the tawny-skinned man — spoke up in a worried voice:
"Captain, the Genesis Organisation has all sorts of weird gadgets. I suggest that we confiscate his silver watch and that green crown on his head, or we might be in trouble without even knowing what caused it."
Valen shot the man an annoyed look.
What in the world was up with him?
