Chapter 7: How to become a mage
The "Basic Runes Used in Medicine" section of book was massive—hundreds of them. Max powered through every single one, reading about what they did, how to use them, where to place them... and he kept hitting little surprises along the way.
First off, he only had to read a rune once. Just once, and every detail—word for word—stuck in his head. Even new, previously unknown rune knowledge somehow slipped into his mind, as if he’d always known it like a mother tongue. Convenient, right?
"So I can literally strengthen my organs, siphon energy to heal myself... holy crap. Being a magical doctor is overpowered," Max muttered, grinning like a kid in a candy store.
Another shocker: you could stack runes on your body as much as you wanted. The only limit was your own body—and even that could be pushed with certain runes.
And the complexity... oh, the complexity. Some runes simply filled your muscles with mana to make them stronger. Others made those muscles use the mana to produce explosive power. Some even turned your body into a bigger mana battery. Basically, Max realized he could become a walking, regenerating, overpowered magic tank—and all it took was a little reading.
The deeper Max delved into these runes, the more they clicked. They basically mirrored an age-old cultivation technique: storing energy in different parts of the body, strengthening them bit by bit, over and over. Only now, instead of meditation or weird breathing exercises, it was runes doing the heavy lifting.
Max realized he could basically craft his own system. But basic runes alone wouldn’t cut it. He finished that section and grabbed the next book. While there weren’t advanced medicinal runes per se, the book mapped out human organs and body parts that could be enhanced or healed using runes: heart, lungs, kidneys, muscles, even the five senses.
But what caught Max’s attention most were the so-called metaphysical organs—the lower mana vessels. A few inches below the navel, every human had them, but only those who could actually fill them was one who could sense and use the mana.
"Hahaha... finally, my dream... I’m gonna live my dream... dual cultivation, ahahaha! Having sex is gonna make me strong, hahahaha!" Max cackled, already picturing himself getting ridiculously overpowered while doing the most "productive" of extracurricular activities : sex
But as he read further, Max realized he didn’t even need to worry about most of it.
The Forbidden Acts System would probably handle the hard parts for him anyway.
Which, honestly, felt slightly unfair—but he wasn’t about to complain.
If anything, it just made things better.
His interest only grew as he reached the section on lower mana vessels. In medical magic, they were mostly used to store healing mana—basically a built-in health pack for emergencies. Useful, practical... and, to most people, nothing particularly exciting.
Max, however, wasn’t most people.
Because if these vessels could store mana... they could also refine it.
And that’s where things bit confusing.
There was some information about refining mana, but nothing that actually explained how to do it properly.
The only consistent details were that it was considered dangerous, and that only people capable of sensing mana could even attempt it.
Attempt what, exactly?
That part was mysteriously absent.
The web wasn’t any more helpful either. There were plenty of mentions of mana refinement—enough to prove people definitely practiced it—but actual instructions? Techniques? Methods?
Nothing.
’Maybe it needs some secret technique or family method...?’ Max thought.
Because, judging by the complete lack of usable information, mana refinement was currently sitting in the very annoying category of:
things that obviously existed, everyone vaguely talked about, and were completely out of reach for him for now.
Not that it stopped him from thinking about it.
Because, for some reason, the more absurd and impossible a cultivation method sounded, the more... appealing it became.
A classic weeb problem, really.
Didn’t matter if he couldn’t use it yet.
Didn’t matter if it might kill him.
If it sounded cool?
Yeah... he was already interested.
And turns out, to actually be called a mage, you needed to be able to refine mana. Do that, and congratulations—you officially qualified for the fancy title.
Mage ranks ranged from one ring to ten rings: one-ring mages were beginners, while ten-ring mages stood at the level of Archmages.
According to the previous owner’s memories, only a single person had ever reached the very top.
Who were they?
Nobody seemed to know.
Their identity remained a mystery.
But apparently... they were still out there somewhere.
As for 9th Circle mages? There were a few dozen of them in the world, but they were far too busy saving nations or whatever to bother filling some random kid’s lower mana vessel. Perfect. Just the way Max liked it—overpowered power all to himself.
And, of course, no one had the time—or guts—to try this "experiment." Yeah, experiment. Storing healing mana in a lower vessel wasn’t even proven; it was purely theoretical. Maybe some secret lab had attempted it, but Max wasn’t about to go snooping around to find out. He was confident he could fill the vessel himself, even without knowing how to sense mana, if he wants too.
The only problem now was acquiring more advanced knowledge. Fortunately—or unfortunately, depending on how you looked at it—there was still one book left. Smaller than the others, but by far the most exciting: Human Physique: A Perfect Mana Vessel. And, of course, it was written by some anonymous genius.
But before he could even open the book, a firm hand clamped down on his shoulder.
"What’s a patient like you doing in a staff-only area?" a low, threatening voice growled. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com
"Fuck..." Max muttered under his breath, his body tensing. He slowly turned around—and froze.
Standing there was a giant woman with... well, a presence. The boss of his first round: the head nurse, the infamous "old hag."
Old? Max laughed silently to himself. Compared to his step-grandmother, she didn’t look ancient. A few streaks of gray near the front of her hair, slight wrinkles around her eyes, a mature face with a hint of sagging skin—classic milf vibes. Tall, imposing, with a bit of extra weight: foldy stomach, thick thighs... and, of course, the kind of breasts that made Max involuntarily stare like a total idiot.
"Sorry, Miss Diaza... I thought I saw a ghost," Max muttered.
Her pale skin gleamed under the fluorescent lights as she adjusted her round glasses and looked down at him. "I’ve been called many things... old witch, hag... but ghost is a first," she said, her tone flat, almost emotionless. Despite the arrogance in her bearing, there was no warmth in her eyes. "That aside—answer me. What are you doing in the staff-only section?"
She towered over him—tall enough that even if Max stood perfectly upright, he would still be staring at her chest. Yep, no saving face here, not even if he tried.
"Doctor Mitchel said I could come here to read some books..." Max mumbled, carefully trying to turn his attention elsewhere.
It wasn’t easy. Her chest was impossible to ignore. Even with a bra, they hung low, just above her stomach, long and heavy, spreading wide enough that he could almost feel the weight from where he stood. Her broad back supported them like some natural scaffolding.
Wide, heavy... probably two or more kilograms each, easily capable of crushing a skull if she wanted.
Still, Max wouldn’t even blink at the thought. Hell, if it came down to it, he might volunteer to die that way, might even kill others for a chance like that
