Chapter 91: Evelyn Starling.

The drive to Evelyn’s hotel was quiet, the environment was similar to what it was when Lucian was with Captain Hale and the others, just much stricter.

Claire wasn’t here, she wasn’t part of the team. Lucian tried to talk to Alaric, he didn’t pay him any heed, in fact, for the major part, the Commander acted like Lucian didn’t even exist.

So Lucian shifted his attention to someone else.

Clara Voss.

"So... you are related to Claire Voss, huh? Sisters?"

"..."

Clara completely ignored him.

"Hmm? Is that jealousy I sense? You don’t have to worry though, I definitely don’t think your sister’s better than you. She’s kind of a nagger to be honest."

"..."

Again, just like Alaric, Clara didn’t react.

Lucian frowned, then he looked around.

Elise and Sarah ignored him just like Clara, Lila was looking at him but the moment he looked at her, she looked away.

"Hmmm."

Lucian hummed.

"Is this what you guys were whispering among each other back then? To not talk to me? Talk about presence, just my existence alone is enough to intimidate grown supernatural hunters into using middle school girl group tactics."

Lucian raised his eyebrows, clearly impressed by himself.

And those words made Sarah’s mouth twitch.

"Take the hint, kid."

She spoke up.

"You aren’t welcome here."

"Is it because I don’t have enough ’command confidence’ to be in this mission?"

Lucian looked at her and grinned.

"It is because none of us here trust you with our backs after what you did in your first mission."

"You have no idea what I did in my first mission, do you, Street Girl?"

"I know you failed to follow orders and that is all I need to know."

Sarah shook her head.

"And I thought you of all people would understand."

Lucian smiled.

"Sarah Black, an ordinary human with no special blood, family name, or even formal hunter training before being recruited by the Enclave. A woman smart enough to survive in streets infested with supernatural beings for five years based purely on her instincts and the skill to read people."

Sarah turned towards Lucian with a frown and he just tilted his head.

"So all that talk about sharp instincts in your file is just on paper, huh? I don’t know why I expected better."

He shrugged.

"You think you can provoke me?"

Sarah narrowed her eyes.

"I am not trying to provoke you, Sarah. I am only trying to know my team better and you people aren’t exactly making things easy for me."

"You have no need to ’know the team’ because you aren’t part of the team. You are only here because the protection target requested you, that is all you will be. The best thing you can do for the team is to not be a bother.

Just talk to the friend who requested you and let us complete the actual mission."

Lucian looked at her as she said those words, then he looked around and seeing how no one else spoke, it was clear they all agreed with those words.

"This really does look like a middle school girls’ drama.

Are we in a show? Are there cameras around?" ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

He started looking around, wanting to wave at them and say hello YouTube.

Unfortunately, he didn’t find any.

This time, no one reacted to his shenanigans, Sarah simply looked away, no longer wanting to talk to him, Lila still stared at him from time to time, but she didn’t say anything when he approached her.

Yep.

They were shunning him.

So in the end, Lucian just sat back and smiled to himself.

He wanted to see how this would play out. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

The rest of the drive was even more silent, Lucian too, looked out of the window, literally anything outside was far more interesting than the group he was sitting with.

Traffic lights.

People walking.

Couples arguing near cafes.

Office workers checking their phones.

A street musician playing to a small crowd.

Yep, very interesting.

Then, after about thirty minutes, the car turned into a private lane and entered a hotel through an underground service entrance.

The building above looked like a place built for the rich, polished marble, warm lights and everything, but Lucian could sense it—

There was far more to this place than met the eye.

The moment the car parked, the team stepped out, and as if they had already discussed everything and distributed their roles, they all moved.

Leaving Lucian alone, again.

Alaric gave orders to the hotel security, Clara moved to speak with a manager. Others moved toward a private elevator at the back, Lucian followed them.

Even as the elevator door closed, the group stayed silent, completely ignoring Lucian, this time, he didn’t bother talking to them either.

The elevator rose silently and opened to a private floor.

Two ordinary bodyguards stood outside a large suite with tense, heavy looks on their faces, somehow, both Alaric and Clara were already here.

When the guards saw them, they stepped aside.

The group walked in, Lucian followed.

The suite was large, bright, and elegant, with tall windows overlooking the city and... she was there, standing near the window.

Evelyn Starling. (Picture in comment)

She was wearing a simple white sweater and dark trousers. Her hair fell over one shoulder in a slightly messy bun, but on her, even that looked elegant.

"Miss Starling."

Alaric stepped forward.

Evelyn turned around, her face was paler than the pictures, she looked slightly thinner too, but even that didn’t take away from her beauty.

She was... mesmerisingly beautiful.

Her eyes fell on Alaric, then they moved to Clara and the others, until finally, they stopped on Lucian and the moment they did, her shoulders relaxed.

Lucian did not miss that detail.

In fact, he noticed a lot more.

The instant her eyes fell on him, her shoulders relaxed, her fingers that were curled tightly near her sleeve loosened, her breathing changed very slightly and even her heartbeat eased.

The tension that her body had been holding onto all this while, the moment she saw him, some of it was released and Lucian—

’That’s... odd.’

He narrowed his eyes.

It wasn’t a normal reaction.

Of course, that was only for a split second, before anyone here could notice the change in his expression, his usual smile appeared on his face and—

"Hello again~"

He waved at her.
