Chapter 98: Chapter 98 The Price of a Date

On the way back, Rose and Caleb reviewed the situation.

Hospitals had strict regulations. Because of patient privacy laws, there were no security cameras inside the wards.

What was peculiar was that the Clinical Research Ward was separated from the Clinical Research Center by only a single corridor.

The clinical side had positioned its surveillance cameras very carefully, which meant Mike’s ward had become a blind spot.

It seemed this accusation of “attempted murder” would be very difficult to clear.

“Every dose of our experimental medication has to be documented and approved,” Caleb said. “It’s not something just anyone can take from the research center for personal use. Yet Mike somehow got hold of it. This was clearly aimed at both you and G.S. I’m afraid it wasn’t just a simple accident.”

Rose nodded. “This attack was too precise. The truth is, I do have conflicts with Samantha and Mike. Anyone would assume this is exactly the kind of thing I’d do.”

It was a trap designed to destroy her.

And no one would question its authenticity.

“If this gets out, the repercussions will be enormous,” Caleb said with a frown. “Peace will be dragged into the center of a medical malpractice scandal, and G.S Pharmaceuticals’ drug development could be suspended. Especially now, while we’re seeking funding. We can’t afford negative publicity, or the losses will be devastating.”

Rose knew this was a coordinated effort to corner her and crush her.

When there were too many coincidences...

Could it really be a coincidence?

Even though she wasn’t panicking, she still felt guilty.

“Caleb, at the end of the day, this is all because of me. Both Peace and G.S are being caught in the crossfire.”

Even if Samantha didn’t dare openly offend Peace, they would still suffer some consequences.

Caleb tapped her lightly on the forehead.

“It’s not your fault. Stop overthinking it.”

Only then did Rose smile.

“But Samantha didn’t realize you’re not just a junior researcher—you’re the project lead. At your level, your name would appear on the report even if you hadn’t participated in the clinical trial. Going there was simply part of your responsibilities.”

Caleb snorted.

Back then, they had deliberately concealed Rose’s identity, which caught the other side off guard and ruined their plans.

At this moment, Samantha was probably still celebrating, convinced that Rose had finally been “kicked out” and had lost any right to receive credit for the project.

“First, we need to control public opinion and stop this from escalating. There may not be surveillance cameras in that area, but...” Rose remained completely calm. “Diana’s documentary crew has cameras there. Since Samantha left the project team long ago, she wouldn’t know the camera placements or who was managing them. The truth will come out.”

Even Caleb looked surprised.

He had completely forgotten about the documentary.

“Wasn’t Diana sent to D.C. on short notice?”

“She’ll be back the day after tomorrow. We can ask her for the raw footage then.”

Only Diana had access to the raw footage.

Rose could have told Samantha about the documentary cameras earlier, but there was no reason to reveal that trump card.

A showdown?

She was more than willing to play along.

Caleb immediately understood her intentions.

On the surface, Rose appeared to have backed down.

In reality, she was simply lulling the other side into a false sense of security.

As long as...

They were willing to face the consequences once Peace decided to hold them accountable.

And if Peace took action, Caleb would no longer be able to remain uninvolved.

*****

She returned home.

That evening, Rose received a message.

It was from James.

[The consequences of this are too serious, Rose. Don’t ruin your life just to fight Samantha. If they find out you did this, you could face criminal charges—and in the worst-case scenario, prison. You can’t handle this alone. Go talk to Samantha, apologize, or...]

[Go ask Ryan for help. You were married once. He might show you some mercy.]

Rose was surprised that James had reached out to her.

It was genuinely baffling.

After all, their relationship had never been particularly good.

She had no interest in guessing his motives.

Whether he was enjoying the spectacle or kicking her while she was down was none of her concern.

Even if, on the surface, he seemed to be offering advice.

But apologizing to Samantha?

Asking Ryan for help?

James was still speaking from a position of privilege.

He seemed to have forgotten that she was a person too.

She had her own dignity and principles.

Ask Ryan for help?

Absolutely not.

Rose turned off her phone and ignored the message.

*****

The next day, Rose returned to Peace’s Clinical Research Center.

She had worked there for so long that there was still a large amount of data she hadn’t exported.

She needed to finish organizing it.

Through internal updates from Caleb, she had already learned about Mike’s condition.

It was indeed an acute allergic reaction.

His airways had become severely obstructed. If the dosage had been any higher, the consequences could have been catastrophic.

Fortunately, Mike was heavier than most children and physically stronger, so the situation hadn’t become critical.

As soon as she reached the ground floor, she noticed a familiar Maybach parked outside the neighboring office building.

Ryan stepped out of the car.

A senior executive from the company across the street immediately greeted him with an ingratiating smile.

What a coincidence.

Ryan lifted his gaze slightly and immediately spotted Rose standing outside the G.S building.

Their eyes met across the short distance between them.

His noble, aloof features made him stand out effortlessly in any crowd.

Rose suddenly remembered James’s suggestion from the day before.

He had told her to ask Ryan for help.

And now she had run into Ryan.

She looked away as though she didn’t know him at all and walked straight into the G.S building.

Beg him?

Not a chance.

If she could solve the problem herself, she would never lower her head to him after the divorce.

And even if she couldn’t solve it...

She still wouldn’t.

Her retreating figure was crisp and distant.

Ryan watched her for two seconds before turning and entering the building next door.

*****

Rose had just gone upstairs and was about to head for the laboratory when Caleb stopped her.

“This isn’t good.”

Rose looked over. “What happened?”

Caleb frowned. “News about the hospital incident has leaked. One of the investors backing our robotics project wants to withdraw. The contract allows them to pull out without penalty if negative publicity affects the project.”

Just this morning, four companies had already backed out.

The news about Mike’s allergic reaction had originally been kept under wraps.

Samantha had repeatedly assured everyone that she wouldn’t make a public issue out of it.

Yet somehow, at this critical moment, every investor had learned about it.

It was obvious.

Someone was forcing Caleb to choose.

Sacrifice Rose.

Or protect the project.

Rose looked over the list of withdrawn investors.

“People naturally seek profit and avoid risk,” she said calmly. “At least this helps us identify unreliable partners.”

Still, the funding situation had become urgent.

With the project launch approaching, losing multiple investors would be extremely damaging.

“Let’s focus on securing the remaining two investors first.”

Rose was a woman of action.

She grabbed her bag and headed downstairs immediately.

Right now, minimizing losses was the priority.

She had just stepped out of the lobby when a car pulled up directly in front of her, blocking her path.

The door opened.

Jordan stepped out and strode toward her.

Leaning casually against the car door, he looked at her.

“I heard G.S’s new project has hit some trouble. Funding issues?”

Rose stared at him silently.

Because Jordan looked exactly like someone who had come to gloat.

Jordan noticed her cold expression.

A trace of discomfort crossed his face, but he quickly brushed it aside.

He walked over and bent down slightly. “I can invest three hundred million in G.S.”

Rose blinked in surprise.

She never would have imagined that the person willing to invest during such a critical moment—despite all the controversy surrounding G.S—would be Jordan.

And he was offering three hundred million dollars.

Just like that.

Seeing her surprise, Jordan fixed his gaze on her fair face.

His eyes lingered briefly on her lips before he spoke.

“But I have one condition.”

Rose looked at him. “What condition?”

Jordan held her gaze and said without hesitation: “Rose, go on a date with me.”

Rose: “...?”

At that moment—

Footsteps sounded nearby.

She turned instinctively.

And her eyes met Ryan’s.

He had just emerged from the office building across the street.
