Chapter 85: Chapter 85 What Do You Think, Ryan?

For a moment, Rose thought she must have misheard.

She never would have imagined that the blame for Samantha’s fall down the stairs would somehow end up on her shoulders.

Diana had already stepped forward, laughing out of sheer disbelief.

"What kind of nonsense are you talking about? Have you lost your mind in broad daylight?"

Leaning comfortably against her pillow, Samantha appeared calm and magnanimous.

"Rose knows exactly what I’m talking about. The timing and circumstances are just a little too coincidental. I’m sure everyone here can connect the dots."

"Enough."

Rose squeezed Diana’s hand gently before turning toward Samantha.

Her gaze had never been colder.

"You led Ethan on and then abandoned him. Before your engagement was even officially broken off, you started seeing his cousin. Do I really need to explain how much Isabella hates you?"

They had been tearing each other apart, and now they were trying to pin everything on her?

Even if they were looking for a scapegoat, when had she ever agreed to quietly take the blame?

Her words were blunt.

Far too blunt.

"Led him on."

"Started seeing his cousin."

The room instantly grew tense.

Was Rose really speaking this openly in front of Ryan?

Was this how they usually interacted as husband and wife?

James couldn’t help glancing at Ryan.

Ryan remained leaning against the window frame, his eyes calmly fixed on Rose.

Neither angry nor pleased.

Not even slightly annoyed by her sharp tongue.

James shrugged inwardly.

He understood.

This was simply the calm before the storm.

Ryan would never let Samantha’s injury slide so easily.

"Watch your language."

A trace of displeasure flashed across Samantha’s face.

"I didn’t want to make a big issue out of this. But I didn’t expect you to show up at my hospital room demanding that I return to work while I’m injured, using professional responsibility to pressure me morally. Under those circumstances, I don’t see any reason to spare your feelings."

Rose almost laughed.

In fact, she did.

Seeing her completely unapologetic expression, Oliver frowned.

"What kind of attitude is that? No matter what, Sam is still your sister. There was no need to make such a scene."

He shook his head.

"She’s already been generous enough. Even if your marriage isn’t going well, that doesn’t give you the right to break the law. This is intentional assault."

Truthfully, Oliver hadn’t disliked Rose before.

At most, he found her calculating.

But she was Ryan’s wife, and he had never cared enough to argue with her.

Now things were different.

Samantha had saved his grandfather.

Naturally, he couldn’t stand by while she was being bullied.

A mocking smile curved across Rose’s lips.

"How noble of you."

Her voice was dripping with sarcasm.

"If you’re accusing me of pushing her, where’s the evidence? Want to call the police? Go ahead. I’ll cooperate fully."

She looked around the room.

"Do you think New Hope installed security cameras for decoration?"

As she spoke, her gaze shifted toward Ryan.

She would be lying if she said she wasn’t mocking herself a little.

Seven years of marriage.

Didn’t he know her character by now?

Or was Samantha’s word simply enough to outweigh everything else?

She didn’t need him to defend her.

At the very least—

Ryan lifted his eyes and met her gaze.

"The incident happened in the emergency stairwell. That section is currently under renovation and has no surveillance coverage."

His tone was calm.

Matter-of-fact.

He wasn’t openly accusing her.

Yet somehow, his words felt worse.

He was simply informing her of reality.

Rose stared into his detached eyes.

Even though she no longer cared about him, it still felt as though a needle had lodged itself in her throat.

Was he remaining neutral?

No.

Neutrality wasn’t truly neutral when one side was already being treated as guilty.

Diana immediately sensed Rose’s emotions.

Her eyes reddened with anger.

Pointing at Samantha, she snapped, "Do I really need underhanded tricks to deal with you?"

She laughed coldly. "You’re the mistress. She’s the wife. Isn’t it only natural for the wife to confront the mistress?"

Her voice rose. "Who do you think you are? Forget schemes—even if I beat you up right in front of Ryan, so what?"

Diana was completely furious.

She strode toward the bed, intending to drag Samantha off it by her hair.

She had never felt so humiliated before.

And all of it was because of Rose.

The anger in her chest had nowhere to go.

Diana always acted before thinking.

She moved so quickly that Oliver and the others couldn’t react in time.

But before her hand could reach Samantha—

Someone grabbed her wrist.

It was Ryan.

The sudden sight made Rose’s heart skip.

She shared Diana’s frustration.

But once Ryan got involved, things would become much harder to resolve.

She hurried over.

Without thinking, she grabbed Ryan’s wrist.

Ryan had never been the type to argue with women.

His temperament had always been distant and indifferent.

Most matters weren’t worth his attention.

But this involved Samantha.

Rose didn’t dare take the risk.

In her haste, she accidentally bumped into his shoulder.

Standing firmly between them, she looked directly into his eyes.

"We should handle things reasonably, shouldn’t we?"

The moment her hand wrapped around his wrist, Ryan released Diana almost immediately.

His gaze lowered slightly.

He casually glanced at Rose’s hand.

She was trembling.

He could feel it.

"Isabella said she saw you push her."

His voice remained calm.

As if he were merely stating facts.

Explaining the situation.

Only then did Rose’s expression darken.

So Isabella—the person who had actually started everything—had now become the star witness.

Ryan slowly straightened.

Yet he still didn’t shake off Rose’s hand.

"Acting emotionally won’t solve anything," he said. "I think you understand that better than your friend."

Of course Rose understood.

Slowly, she withdrew her hand.

Then she turned and grabbed Diana’s.

"Emotions won’t solve anything."

Her voice was cold. "But I’ve never been the emotional one."

She looked around the room. "It’s all of you."

Her eyes swept over them one by one. "Biased. Unfair. And convinced you’re right."

Without another word, she pulled Diana toward the door.

There was no point arguing any longer.

What she needed was a solution.

Not a debate.

Ryan’s gaze followed her as she walked away.

He watched her figure disappear beyond the doorway.

Only then did he look away.

Oliver frowned. "She’s really not going to explain herself?"

It was rare to see someone remain so defiant after supposedly doing something wrong.

A trace of ridicule flashed through Samantha’s eyes.

Still, she maintained her calm demeanor.

"No one likes being accused." She smiled faintly. "She’s not making a scene because she knows she’s guilty."

As she spoke, she turned toward James.

"Mr. Taylor, you’ve been awfully quiet. Why haven’t you said anything?"

In the past, James would have supported her to some degree.

Yet throughout this entire conversation, he hadn’t spoken on her behalf once.

The realization left her uneasy.

Only then did James glance at her.

A casual smile appeared at the corner of his lips.

"This is Ryan’s matter." He shrugged. "I’m just an outsider."

Truthfully, even he found it strange.

Watching Rose become the target of everyone’s accusations had left him feeling unexpectedly restless.

It was an unfamiliar feeling.

And one he couldn’t quite explain.

Samantha wasn’t satisfied with his answer.

She was the injured party.

The victim.

At the very least, he could have shown some concern.

Oliver stepped forward. "You’re simply too considerate."

He smiled. "Ryan understands that perfectly."

Samantha immediately turned toward Ryan.

Looking at his cold, refined profile, her heart began racing again.

"Ryan," she asked softly, "what do you think?"

She deliberately left the decision in his hands.

"Should I continue holding Rose accountable?"

Only then did Ryan slowly raise his eyes.
