Chapter 83: Chapter 83 A Fall Down the Stairs

Everything happened so suddenly.

When Rose turned around, she saw Isabella and Samantha already struggling with each other.

One was a pampered socialite from a wealthy family; the other, a spoiled heiress who had never done a day’s hard work in her life. Neither woman had any real fighting skills, so all they could do was shove and grapple awkwardly.

Samantha still felt somewhat intimidated by her former mother-in-law. But then she remembered who was backing her now.

Biting her lip, she quickly glanced around to make sure no one else was nearby except Rose.

"This is a company," she said. "Please control yourself."

"Control myself?" Isabella nearly exploded. "You shameless woman! You practically threw yourself into Ryan’s bed! It was already generous enough for our family to allow you to become engaged to my son, Ethan. He’s in prison, and instead of waiting faithfully for him, you climbed into the bed of his married older brother! Do you have any shame at all?"

Isabella’s voice rang through the stairwell.

Her anger was impossible to suppress.

"It’s all over the internet! What’s with all that flirting and cozy behavior with Ryan during the documentary? Are you trying to force him into marrying you?"

She was genuinely furious.

Earlier that day, she had been hosting a card game at home when one of her wealthy friends showed her a video from the documentary shoot.

The footage showed Samantha standing on tiptoe, seemingly trying to kiss Ryan.

The woman had casually asked, "Is this Ryan’s secret wife? They seem awfully close."

The moment Isabella saw Samantha’s face, she nearly exploded.

Her son was being publicly humiliated.

She had always known Samantha stayed close to Ryan, but seeing her practically throw herself at him with her own eyes was something else entirely.

It was a complete disgrace.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about," Samantha said, noticing Isabella’s unstable emotional state. "I hope we can discuss this calmly. Rose, go get Ryan."

She looked toward the only witness present.

At the very least, she couldn’t allow a scene like this to unfold at New Hope.

Rose pointed at herself.

What did this have to do with her?

Isabella immediately turned and glared at Rose.

"Are you stupid? This woman is openly stealing your husband, and you’re just going to stand there and watch? Come over here and help me hold her down!"

Rose: "..."

For some inexplicable reason, she’d been dragged into a fight between two women.

This was the Knight family’s mess.

She had no intention of getting involved.

Isabella had already exposed Samantha’s relationship with the Knight family, along with the scandal of a woman becoming involved with her fiancé’s older brother while the fiancé was still in prison.

None of that had anything to do with her.

And Margaret certainly couldn’t blame her for it.

She wasn’t the one who started any of this.

Rose turned to leave.

Samantha hadn’t expected Rose to be so indifferent.

She had witnessed everything and was still choosing to walk away.

Unable to overpower Isabella, Samantha could only throw out one final card.

"Don’t you want the antique shop your family has been searching for all these years?"

The words brought Rose’s steps to an abrupt halt.

She slowly turned around.

Her gaze was icy.

So Samantha and the others had always known.

They had always known exactly what the Bennett family’s antique shop meant to her.

They knew what it represented.

And they knew how the Hill family had seized it through questionable means.

Rose walked back.

"Aunt Isabella," she said gently, "this is New Hope. Ryan is still upstairs. If he finds out what happened here today, you know exactly what kind of person he is."

The reminder made Isabella pause.

A trace of fear flashed across her face.

She had always feared Ryan.

Ever since he survived his kidnapping, returned home, and became entangled in the family’s power struggle, the entire Knight family had lived through years of turmoil.

Ryan was ruthless.

Cold.

And utterly merciless.

But the thought of Samantha rising to power and humiliating her son publicly filled Isabella with fresh rage.

She grabbed Samantha and dragged her toward the staircase.

"But she still needs to learn a lesson!"

Rose frowned.

Seeing Samantha half suspended near the stairs, she realized the situation could quickly become dangerous.

Stepping forward, she tried to stop Isabella.

"This is an office building. You need to calm down."

After all, Rose was the only witness.

If something serious happened and the Knight family later accused her of standing by and doing nothing, it could affect her divorce proceedings.

It simply wasn’t worth the risk.

Samantha’s face turned pale.

She hadn’t expected Isabella to care so much about her useless son.

"Ryan won’t let you get away with this. You—"

The threat completely ignited Isabella’s temper.

"You dare threaten me, you shameless woman?!"

With that, Isabella shoved her.

Hard.

Rose watched as Samantha stumbled backward.

Her high heels slipped.

She missed a step.

And instantly lost her balance.

Rose’s expression changed.

Instinctively, she reached out to catch her.

But she was too late.

Samantha tumbled backward.

Thud.

The dull sound echoed through the stairwell.

Isabella froze.

Slowly, she looked down at the hand she had used to push Samantha.

Then she looked toward Rose.

Rose stared at Samantha lying at the bottom of the stairs, unable to move from the pain.

Her face finally changed.

Turning immediately, she prepared to get help.

But the moment she turned around—

She saw Ryan.

He was striding toward them at an alarming pace.

His dark eyes were as cold and sharp as blades.

As he passed Rose, his shoulder brushed against hers.

His hand briefly grazed her neck and shoulder.

Yet he never slowed down.

Rose watched helplessly as he rushed down the stairs, scooped Samantha into his arms, and carried her away.

Everything happened so fast that it felt unreal.

Only then did Isabella snap out of her daze.

Panic spread across her face.

She turned and glared at Rose.

"Why didn’t you stop me?"

Rose frowned. "Do you actually listen to reason?"

Knowing full well how sharp Rose’s tongue could be, Isabella didn’t argue further.

She hurried after them.

Silence descended on the stairwell.

Fortunately, most of New Hope’s employees had already left for the day.

The laboratory building was especially deserted.

Almost no one had witnessed what happened.

After the chaos, Rose sat at the bottom of the stairs for quite a while, trying to steady herself.

Only after catching her breath did she slowly make her way downstairs.

She had no idea what happened after that.

Taking out her phone, she called Diana and asked her to pick her up.

*****

Diana immediately put aside the presentation slides she had been reviewing and drove straight to New Hope.

The moment Rose got into the car, she frowned.

"What happened?"

Rose shook her head.

"It happened again."

Her face was unusually pale.

Diana’s expression tightened.

"What happened? Why do you look like this?"

Rose recounted everything that had occurred.

The more Diana listened, the angrier she became.

Finally, she slammed her hand against the steering wheel.

"It’s all Ryan’s fault! Out of all the women in the world, he had to get involved with his own future sister-in-law. He’s turned that family upside down. The entire Knight family is at war because of him."

Diana snorted. "In my opinion, Samantha deserved it. The whole Knight family probably hates her by now. It’ll be a miracle if she ever officially marries into that family."

For starters, Isabella would never accept her.

And Ethan was about to be released from prison.

Who in their right mind would willingly call their former fiancée "sister-in-law"?

The entire Knight family had descended into chaos because of one woman.

Rose turned to look out the window.

A trace of sarcasm mixed with melancholy entered her voice.

"Love can make people irrational. Ryan is no exception."

She paused. "Even if it means standing against the entire Knight family for Samantha’s sake, he wouldn’t care."

For seven years, everyone in the Knight family had witnessed Ryan’s cold treatment of her.

Inside the family and outside of it, she had endured ridicule and humiliation.

No one had ever taken her seriously.

Now Samantha had thrown the Knight family into complete turmoil.

The Hill family would likely face endless trouble in the future as well.

Rose needed to reclaim the Bennett family’s antique shop as quickly as possible.

Before innocent people became collateral damage.

****

After returning home, Rose applied medicine on her back by herself.

She paid no further attention to Samantha’s condition.

The next morning, she arrived at New Hope as usual.

Neither Samantha nor Ryan appeared that day.
