Chapter 73: Chapter 73 The Police Station Reunion
Rose didn’t even have time to see who it was before she was yanked out of the chaos by the arm.
By the time she regained her bearings and looked over in shock, she could already hear the sound of fists connecting with flesh.
Jordan—no one knew where he had come from—had grabbed the man who’d been holding her and was raining punches and kicks down on him, drawing screams from every direction.
The guests who had gathered for the baby’s welcome party quickly crowded around.
Standing at the center of the commotion, Rose could feel countless curious eyes fixed on her.
The attention made her uncomfortable.
She reached out and tried to pull Jordan back.
"Mr. Dutch! What are you doing?"
She genuinely couldn’t understand what was going through Jordan’s mind.
They weren’t close.
In fact, their previous encounters hadn’t exactly been pleasant.
So why was he helping her now?
Jordan seemed convinced that the man had taken advantage of her. He grabbed hold of him and refused to let go, unconsciously brushing Rose aside in the process.
Although Rose was tall, she was slender. She stumbled backward several steps before barely regaining her balance.
"Mr. Dutch, you..."
She had intended to say more.
At the very least, she didn’t want to ruin Ella’s special day.
But as she looked up, her eyes suddenly met Ryan’s across the crowd.
Unlike the others who had gathered to watch the spectacle, he stood apart from the crowd as though existing in a world of his own.
His gaze swept over her from above.
Powerful.
Imposing.
Yet completely devoid of warmth.
His expression remained detached.
Rose had no idea when he had arrived or whether he had witnessed his wife being harassed.
But regardless of the answer, it changed nothing about his cold, distant demeanor.
He didn’t step in.
He didn’t help.
He didn’t protect her.
Even though she no longer cared about him and had grown to despise this marriage, Rose still reached one conclusion.
If it had been Samantha standing there, he never would have remained idle.
He would have been furious.
He would have pursued the matter to the very end.
The corner of Rose’s lips twitched.
Suddenly, she stopped trying to hold Jordan back.
The situation became increasingly chaotic.
Someone eventually called the police.
Rose was exhausted, but she still had no choice except to accompany the two men to the police station.
Just before getting into the police car, she casually glanced back.
At that exact moment, she saw Ryan turn away.
His arm was linked with Samantha’s as they walked back into the hotel lobby.
Samantha was looking up at him, saying something.
Ryan tilted his head slightly, the corner of his mouth lifting into a faint smile as he listened attentively.
The night wind was strong.
It stirred her hair.
It blurred her vision.
Rose brushed her hair aside little by little.
She had long since grown accustomed to Ryan’s coldness and indifference.
She had reached the point where it no longer hurt.
With calm decisiveness, she stepped into the police car.
They arrived at the station.
Jordan, however, showed no sign of concern.
Sitting comfortably in his chair, he tilted his head toward Rose.
"Is there any man you won’t sleep with?"
Rose knew immediately that he had misunderstood the situation entirely.
She looked at him coolly.
"My private life has nothing to do with you, Mr. Dutch. Would you prefer I say ’thank you’ or ’mind your own business’?"
"..."
Jordan was rendered speechless.
He was genuinely stunned by a woman like Rose.
Whenever she was in the right, she never backed down.
And her tongue was as sharp as a blade.
"Do you not have even a shred of gratitude?"
Rose glanced at her watch.
"Without you, I could have handled it myself. I wouldn’t have had to come to the police station in the first place."
Jordan laughed in disbelief.
So somehow this was his fault?
Rose thought Jordan was behaving strangely as well.
Every time they met, the situation became inexplicable.
What was the point of acting this way if he didn’t even like her?
She genuinely believed that if Jordan hadn’t intervened, she wouldn’t be sitting in a police station giving a statement right now.
She truly couldn’t figure him out.
The last few times they’d met, he’d been sarcastic and hostile for no apparent reason.
And although he seemed to be standing up for her now, she didn’t think that erased everything.
In Rose’s mind, a debt wasn’t settled just because someone slapped you and then handed you a piece of candy afterward.
Jordan clearly had connections.
The other party had originally intended to press charges, but after speaking with Jordan’s people, they backed down and agreed to settle the matter through mediation.
However—
"You’re all adults. Fighting isn’t a good look. Be more careful in the future. Ms. Bennett, just have a family member come sign the paperwork, and you’re free to leave."
The officer on duty approached and handed Rose the documents.
Rose nodded.
"Okay."
At that moment, Jordan finished his paperwork and walked over.
Crossing his arms, he let out a derisive snort.
"Exactly. Why don’t you call that mysterious husband of yours? I’d love to see whether he cares about you fooling around outside."
He genuinely felt that today was the perfect opportunity to test the waters.
Rose shot him a cold glance.
Then she ignored him.
Since Diana was out of town filming, the only person she could call was Caleb.
She certainly wasn’t going to call Dr. Nathan.
The old man was eighty-eight years old, and she had no intention of disturbing him late at night and earning a lecture afterward.
Her only hope was Caleb.
"Sorry, the number you have dialed..."
The automated message made Rose’s heart sink.
Of all times to be unreachable.
Wasn’t this just perfect?
She fidgeted with her fingers before ultimately lowering her phone.
She never considered calling Ryan.
Not to mention she had blocked him days ago.
Besides...
Given Ryan’s personality, even if she called, there was no guarantee he would come.
Why make things difficult for herself?
Rose put away her phone and steadied herself.
"It’s fine if I stays here overnight. Mr. Dutch, if you have nothing else to do, you’re free to leave."
Seeing how utterly unconcerned she appeared, Jordan’s frown deepened.
"Is it because a man got into a fight for you and landed himself in jail that you don’t want your husband finding out?"
Rose couldn’t be bothered to explain.
Let him think whatever he wanted.
Jordan became even more irritated.
He felt as though Rose had completely shattered every impression he’d had of her.
She didn’t dare let her husband know about her behavior, yet she acted as though she had done nothing wrong?
"You—"
"Mr. Dutch?"
A woman’s voice interrupted him.
Rose’s eyebrows twitched as she turned toward the doorway.
Two figures walked inside.
Samantha looked at Jordan in surprise.
"You’re still here?"
Jordan turned toward the man standing calmly beside her.
"Mr. Knight? Why are you here too?"
Rose pressed her lips together.
She never would have expected Ryan to show up.
To rescue her?
Ryan narrowed his eyes and casually glanced in Rose’s direction before speaking.
"Come over here and handle the paperwork."
Jordan looked even more confused.
What did this have to do with Ryan?
"President Knight is cleaning up this mess? That doesn’t seem quite right, does it?"
Samantha laughed softly and explained, "Mr. Dutch, you don’t know the situation. Ella couldn’t come because she has to stay and oversee the baby’s celebration, so she personally asked Ryan to make the trip. Ryan couldn’t exactly refuse."
