Chapter 43: Chapter 43 Ryan Visit the Hospital
Rose stood expressionless before Mike, who had frozen in shock.
She looked down at the spoiled, unruly, ill-mannered child.
The slap had landed squarely across the mouth that had been spewing such vicious words.
Mike had clearly never been disciplined a day in his life.
So much so that it took him several seconds to process what had happened.
His eyes widened in disbelief.
His mouth burned with stinging pain.
He glared at Rose, his face twisting as tears threatened to spill out.
Without a word, Rose grabbed his arm and dragged the sturdy, chubby boy out of the room.
Caleb reacted even faster.
While Rose dealt with Mike, he immediately wheeled Gabriel toward another exit leading outside.
The moment Mike was pulled away, he began screaming at the top of his lungs.
Just as it seemed no one was going to intervene, Daisy suddenly appeared.
She rushed forward and shoved Rose aside.
"Rose, are you out of your mind? How could you hit a child?"
Logan appeared moments later.
Looking at Rose with obvious disappointment, he said, "You’ve gone too far. He’s just a child. Why are you arguing with him?"
Mike’s shrill cries rang endlessly in Rose’s ears.
Mixed with Logan’s and Daisy’s accusations.
She looked at the three of them with cold mockery.
"So he does have parents."
Her voice dripped with sarcasm. "For a moment, I thought they’d all died and I’d have to educate him myself."
When Mike had barged into their banquet room and deliberately provoked her grandfather, Logan and Daisy had been nowhere to be found.
The moment Mike encountered consequences, however, they had appeared instantly.
What impeccable timing.
"Children say foolish things all the time," Daisy snapped coldly. "Why are you taking it so seriously? How old is he compared to you?"
Rose’s gaze turned icy.
She enunciated every word.
"Then make sure this overweight little brat doesn’t provoke people again."
Her voice remained calm. "Otherwise, I might be tempted to speak a little more openly next time."
She looked directly at Daisy. "And then everyone might learn exactly how shameless Samantha is for throwing herself at her own brother-in-law."
"Rose!"
Logan’s expression finally changed.
His voice rose sharply.
For the first time, the mask of the loving father cracked.
"What nonsense are you talking about?"
Rose didn’t have the energy to argue anymore.
The entire situation disgusted her.
Ignoring them completely, she turned and walked away.
Her footsteps were quick and heavy.
No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t stop herself from blaming Ryan.
Regardless of how indifferent he was toward her...
Regardless of how certain he was that she would never expose the truth...
He should never have allowed Samantha and the Hill family to flaunt themselves next door on her grandfather’s birthday.
Not like this.
Only after stepping outside and feeling the breeze against her face did she finally exhale.
Her chest felt as though molten lava were burning through it.
Even her breathing trembled.
But her grandfather was still waiting for her.
Rose quickly composed herself.
Once she was certain she looked normal again, she walked to the car and climbed inside.
Caleb glanced at her.
His lips tightened.
But in the end, he said nothing.
"Where are we going now?"
Rose looked back at Gabriel, who had fallen asleep with his eyes closed.
Then she said quietly, "Let’s go back to the nursing home. At least it’s peaceful there."
Ever since Samantha had taken over the apartment, Rose had barely set foot inside.
And even if she wanted to, it wasn’t a suitable place for her grandfather.
If Gabriel discovered she and Ryan were already separated, it would only upset him.
Especially today.
Caleb nodded.
The nursing home had excellent facilities.
Rose had arranged the best suite available for Gabriel.
It included a private kitchen, a private bathroom, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gardens.
There was more than enough space for everyone to share a meal together.
Fortunately, Gabriel spent much of his time confused these days.
The chaos at the hotel hadn’t affected him.
After escorting them upstairs, Caleb said, "I’ll go order some food. I’ll be back soon."
Rose smiled gratefully.
Caleb’s expression softened.
He gently tapped her forehead.
"Alright. Be a good girl and wait for me."
Rose accompanied Gabriel back to his suite.
She couldn’t help feeling relieved that Caleb had been there today.
Together, they had prevented Mike from upsetting her grandfather.
They had also stopped the Hill family’s plan to publicly broadcast Ryan and Samantha’s interview.
Rose had just poured Gabriel a glass of water when someone knocked on the door.
Confused, she walked over.
"Finished that quickly?"
But the moment she opened the door, her expression froze.
The last trace of her smile vanished.
Ryan slowly lowered his gaze.
His deep eyes settled on her face.
"Aren’t you going to invite me in?"
His tone remained calm.
For a brief moment, Rose wanted nothing more than to shut the door in his face.
Then Gabriel’s voice drifted from inside.
"Who is it, Rose?"
Her grip tightened around the doorknob before slowly relaxing.
Only then did she notice Ryan hadn’t arrived empty-handed.
Several elegantly wrapped gift boxes rested in his arms.
Ryan glanced at her.
Then he stepped past her and entered.
"Grandpa, it’s me."
After walking inside, he approached Gabriel, a faint smile appearing in his eyes.
Gabriel looked confused for a moment.
After studying Ryan for several seconds, recognition finally dawned.
"Ryan? You’re free today?"
Rose entered behind him and immediately saw the joy on her grandfather’s face.
She didn’t know what to say.
Ryan smiled.
"Your birthday comes first. Work can wait."
Rose glanced sideways at him.
She had always admitted one thing:
When Ryan genuinely wanted to make someone happy, very few people could resist him.
"This is from your favorite bakery."
Ryan set one of the boxes on the table.
"I had them reduce the sugar, though. Your health comes first."
"Good, good."
Gabriel nodded happily.
"I’ll do as you say."
"And this."
Ryan opened another box.
"I heard you’ve always missed Grandma’s paintings. I’ve managed to collect a few of them recently. Would you like to take a look?"
Rose followed his gaze.
For a moment, she was genuinely surprised.
Most of her grandmother’s paintings had long since been sold off through antique dealers and private collectors.
Tracking them down had been nearly impossible.
Yet Ryan had somehow recovered at least five pieces.
If they had been works by a famous artist, that would have been one thing.
But her grandmother had never been widely known.
The pieces had scattered everywhere over the years.
Finding them again would have required considerable effort.
Gabriel’s cloudy eyes suddenly brightened.
He stared at the familiar paintings in silence.
His trembling hand reached out to touch the scrolls that still carried traces of his late wife.
Rose, however, felt conflicted.
She couldn’t tell whether Ryan’s behavior was simply the result of good manners and upbringing...
Or whether some deeper emotion was involved.
They were getting divorced.
Why was he putting so much effort into this?
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
Ryan glanced sideways, noticing her frown.
Rose met his gaze calmly.
"I was just thinking you’ve worked very hard."
Ryan raised an eyebrow.
"Oh?"
"On one hand, you devote yourself to the Hill family."
Her voice remained perfectly even.
"And on the other, you maintain such a wonderful relationship with Grandpa."
She almost wanted to applaud him.
Ryan Knight truly deserved his reputation as a businessman.
He wanted everything.
Ryan looked at her coolly. "That doesn’t sound like a compliment."
Rose fell silent.
She couldn’t be bothered to answer.
Since Ryan had come here, he probably already knew about the confrontation with the Hill family.
Yet he hadn’t apologized once.
And as for Mike...
The Hill family—and especially Samantha—had undoubtedly complained to him already.
Given how protective Ryan was of Samantha, how could he possibly stay neutral?
As a result, all of this kindness felt less like generosity and more like a blade hanging over her head.
Then suddenly, Rose remembered something.
A sharp pain shot through her temple.
She had been so furious at Mike, Logan, and the others that she had completely forgotten to contact Diana.
What if Diana returned to the hotel and found no one there?
What if Caleb arrived with Ariel at exactly the wrong moment?
A chill ran down her spine.
She immediately pulled out her phone and sent Diana a message.
Ryan didn’t miss the brief change in her expression.
For those few seconds, she had looked genuinely nervous.
Almost as though she were afraid of something.
Before he could think further, Gabriel suddenly spoke.
"Ryan."
The old man smiled warmly. "You’ve been married for so many years. When are you and Rose going to have another child?"
The question instantly interrupted everyone’s thoughts.
"Another child?"
Ryan looked at Gabriel.
