Chapter 35: Chapter 35 The Old Doctor’s Unexpected Lesson

Rose couldn’t help but admire the old man’s way of thinking.

She quickly said, “The Knight family forbids me from revealing their true relationship. There are a lot of people in the company who might overhear, so please watch your language.”

Nathan snorted coldly.

“What do you mean by ‘true relationship’? She’s nothing but a mistress.”

Rose leaned in and nodded in agreement.

“If this were back in the day—”

“We’d have thrown her into a pig cage,” Nathan immediately finished, slamming his fist onto the table.

Caleb: “...”

Neither master nor disciple had particularly stable temperaments.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

The door swung open.

Ryan looked up, his gaze briefly passing over Rose.

He didn’t linger on her.

When Samantha spotted Rose in the reception room, she instinctively frowned.

Then she slipped her arm through Ryan’s and, completely ignoring Rose, greeted Nathan with a faint smile.

“Hello, Dr. Hale. My name is Samantha Hill. It’s a privilege to finally meet you.”

Nathan lifted his herbal teacup and took a sip.

Glancing at Ryan, he said, “Mr. Knight, it’s been a long time.”

He paid Samantha no attention whatsoever.

Samantha’s expression froze.

Ryan’s eyes remained calm as he offered a faint smile and nodded.

“It’s been three years since we last met. When my grandfather was gravely ill, you came out of retirement to save his life. He often speaks of you and remains deeply grateful.”

At that, Nathan couldn’t help glancing at Rose.

Back then, he had been vacationing overseas.

Had Rose not personally begged him, he never would have agreed to see the late Chairman Knight.

Yet Rose had never taken credit for it.

She stubbornly refused to tell the Knight family that she had been the one who invited him.

The Knight family owed Rose a tremendous favor.

And they didn’t even realize it.

Rose immediately understood the look Nathan gave her.

It clearly meant: Look at the family you’ve devoted yourself to.

She wisely kept her mouth shut.

“Really? Dr. Hale and the Knight family have such a close relationship.”

Samantha sounded genuinely surprised.

Nathan glanced at Samantha before turning to Ryan.

“I seem to recall Chairman Knight mentioning that you’re married, Mr. Knight. Who is this young lady?”

It was a remarkably sharp question.

Rose remained silent.

Samantha didn’t understand why he would ask such a thing.

Since Nathan knew Ryan was married—and she had just entered arm-in-arm with him—was there really any need to clarify her identity?

Especially in front of Rose.

If the truth were exposed here, wouldn’t Rose find it amusing?

Although Samantha didn’t understand why Caleb had brought Rose into G.S., Rose held little importance in her eyes.

Turning to Caleb, she said, “Mr. Byrne, could you please ask unrelated personnel to step outside? We have important matters to discuss.”

Caleb, who had been thoroughly enjoying the show, raised an eyebrow.

“Who exactly?”

Samantha glanced at Rose.

“Your employee. She really lacks tact.”

Did Rose truly belong in a gathering like this?

And yet she had stayed here the entire time.

Rose pointed at herself.

Me?

Should I leave?

“Mr. Knight must spoil Miss Hill quite a bit,” Caleb remarked dryly. “She’s already issuing orders in my company.”

Anyone with eyes could see that Samantha’s arrogance came entirely from Ryan’s unconditional indulgence.

It had fostered a self-righteous confidence that bordered on absurdity.

She didn’t even bother hiding her contempt when facing the legal wife.

Ryan understood the implication behind Caleb’s words.

Slowly turning toward Nathan, he said, “Dr. Hale, Samantha studied medicine and previously participated in chronic disease drug research in China. She’s come here to further develop her skills. Would you be willing to review some of her work?”

A faint smile curved Samantha’s lips.

It was actually convenient that Rose was present.

Let her witness the gap between them.

Maybe then she’d finally understand her own inadequacy.

Stepping forward, Samantha spoke earnestly.

“It was your work that inspired me to study medicine in the first place. I’ve come here today hoping you’ll agree to mentor me.”

Rose looked over in surprise.

Even Caleb found it amusing.

Was Samantha really walking straight into a trap?

Nathan had been enjoying the performance for quite some time.

Stroking his white beard, he nodded.

“Very well.”

Samantha’s face immediately brightened.

Nathan gave her a sidelong glance.

“Taking on a protégé is a serious commitment. There are rules. Talent is important, but we also conduct a thorough background investigation.”

He counted on his fingers.

“Family ties. Social connections. Personal history. Character and conduct.”

“All of that information about anyone who trains under me will be made public. Are you willing to undergo that process?”

“What?”

The smile vanished from Samantha’s face.

Her lips pressed tightly together.

She hadn’t expected the requirements to be so strict.

Wouldn’t that mean—

“Not interested?”

Nathan immediately turned toward the silent Rose, pretending ignorance.

“I think this young lady has potential. Why don’t you join my research team instead? Are you married? Would your husband mind if his identity were made public?”

Rose instantly understood her teacher’s malicious sense of humor.

“...”

The atmosphere became awkward.

Samantha’s expression darkened.

Caleb immediately joined in.

“It seems Rose is married. Are you planning to help her make an official announcement, Dr. Hale?”

Rose watched the two old schemers play off one another.

“...”

They were deliberately embarrassing Samantha and Ryan.

Samantha’s expression had already become unsightly.

She believed Nathan’s offer to accept Rose as a disciple was merely a joke.

But she was also worried.

If Rose openly admitted that Ryan was her husband, would Nathan start looking down on Samantha?

Unable to do anything else, she turned toward Ryan.

Unlike her, he remained calm and composed.

Ryan’s gaze briefly swept over Rose’s face.

Then he looked at Nathan.

There wasn’t a trace of arrogance in his demeanor.

Instead, he appeared remarkably humble.

“Dr. Hale, you’re welcome to set whatever conditions you wish.”

Rose gazed at his dignified features.

Her fingernails dug into her palms.

Yet she felt no pain.

To support Samantha, he truly spared no effort.

Nathan saw it as well.

Anger surged inside him.

Rising to his feet, his expression turned icy.

“Fine.”

He pointed directly at Samantha.

“Then I’ll have this fox-tailed mistress go out in public and apologize to Rose.”

His voice rang through the room.

“Admit that you’re the scum who destroyed another woman’s family, and then I’ll consider it.”

Samantha’s expression changed dramatically.

She hadn’t expected Nathan to know about that relationship.

And—

Scum?

She refused to believe Nathan had come up with that word on his own.

If Rose hadn’t been whispering behind her back, using language like that, how could Nathan possibly have humiliated her so directly?

Immediately, Samantha shot Rose a cold, furious, and contemptuous look.

So that’s what it was.

Rose had only just joined G.S., yet she had somehow leveraged Caleb’s relationship with Nathan to gain access to someone of his stature.

And the first thing she’d done was spread stories about Samantha beforehand.

Planting ideas.

Poisoning opinions.

Trying to destroy her reputation.

Samantha clenched her fists.

She had underestimated Rose after all.
