Chapter 29: Chapter 29 The Wrong Lifesaver
Rose hurried over.
An elderly man leaning on a cane was shakily bracing himself against a flower bed. His face was pale, his breathing erratic, and he appeared to be fighting back waves of nausea.
Rose didn’t dare waste a second. Elderly people often had underlying health conditions, and when a sudden illness struck, it could quickly become life-threatening.
She jogged over.
"Sir?"
The old man’s consciousness was somewhat clouded, but he managed to steady himself and glance at Rose.
Frowning, Rose quickly assessed his condition. She checked his blood pressure, observed his breathing pattern, skin color, and level of consciousness, then rapidly formed a preliminary diagnosis..
The elderly man was most likely suffering from acute gastrointestinal spasms. Coupled with his severe hypertension, complications had already begun to develop.
Any delay could very likely lead to a cerebral hemorrhage or trigger a thrombotic stroke.
Supporting him with one hand, she said patiently, "Please don’t worry. Try to keep your breathing steady."
Quickly retrieving her emergency medical kit, Rose administered first-aid treatment while monitoring his vital signs and taking measures to stabilize his condition until further medical care could be arranged.
Before long, the old man let out a sudden gasp.
His breathing gradually steadied.
The dilation in his pupils began to recede.
Looking at Rose, he said gratefully, "Young lady, thank you so much. I’ve even gotten your clothes dirty."
Seeing that he was no longer in immediate danger, Rose asked, "It’s fine. Is anyone from your family here? Would you like me to help you get back to your room?"
Mathew Brown shook his head.
"No need. I’m feeling much better now. The kids would only worry if they found out."
Especially that rascal Oliver. He was already concerned about Mathew wandering off on his own to clear his head. If he learned about this incident, he’d become even more impossible to deal with.
Rose persisted.
"Since you have several chronic conditions, I recommend getting a thorough examination. It’ll help identify the underlying cause and make treatment more effective."
Mathew found himself liking Rose more and more.
He nodded with a smile.
"Alright, young lady. What’s your name?"
Rose opened her mouth to answer.
"Dr. Bennett! There’s a patient over here with unusual symptoms. Could you come?"
A member of the medical outreach team rushed over and called out urgently.
Rose nodded.
Turning back to Mathew, she smiled.
"You’re welcome. It’s all part of my job. I’ll ask the resort staff to escort you back."
After making the necessary arrangements, she hurried away.
Mathew watched her retreating figure and regretfully tapped his cane.
He had been hoping to get to know her better.
Who knew? He might even have introduced her to his good-for-nothing grandson.
Soon afterward, resort staff arrived with Oliver.
Oliver’s face immediately turned pale as he checked his grandfather from head to toe.
"You had another episode? We need to get you to the hospital right now!"
The old man snorted. "A beautiful young lady took good care of me and saved this old man’s life."
Oliver immediately relaxed.
"Who was she? What’s her name?"
The old man looked disappointed. "Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to ask. She was a particularly elegant and striking young woman—probably one of the physicians from the international medical outreach team. Our family owes her a tremendous debt of gratitude. If it weren’t for her quick thinking and treatment, I’d probably be smiling down at everyone from a framed portrait by now."
"Grandpa, don’t say things like that."
Oliver rubbed his forehead helplessly.
Mathew tapped his cane as he walked.
"What a shame I didn’t get her contact information. Such a lovely girl. I was even thinking of introducing her to you. Though honestly, a kid like you probably isn’t good enough for her."
Oliver: "..."
Naturally, he was deeply grateful to her.
But since he had no way of contacting her, the matter would have to wait.
He immediately escorted his grandfather back to the suite.
The resort maintained a top-tier medical team along with portable diagnostic equipment.
Oliver knew his grandfather’s condition well.
Years of overworking himself in his youth had left behind countless health problems, and now they were beginning to surface all at once.
After the examination, the physician exclaimed in surprise.
"It’s incredible. Mr. Brown was on the verge of a cerebral hemorrhage not long ago. With a blood clot this severe, most patients would require emergency surgery immediately. Yet his condition has already stabilized. He only needs proper follow-up treatment now. Whoever intervened truly saved his life."
Oliver thought for a moment.
He decided to visit the medical outreach team and find out who it was.
Just as he entered the lobby, he ran into Samantha and Ryan, who had just returned.
The volunteer vest Samantha was wearing immediately caught his attention.
His eyes lit up.
"Was it you who saved my grandfather?"
Even Ryan turned to look at Samantha.
Samantha had indeed just returned from volunteering at the clinic.
Most of the resort’s guests were influential figures from high society.
Helping out there was an excellent networking opportunity.
She had assisted with health screenings and consultations throughout the day.
So when Oliver looked at her with such gratitude, she was briefly stunned before smiling.
"So it was your grandfather? It was nothing."
She hadn’t expected her luck to be this good.
Since she had apparently treated the Brown family patriarch, the Browns would naturally owe her a favor.
"My grandfather said you’re very beautiful. He praised you endlessly and insisted on thanking you properly."
Oliver looked at Samantha with obvious appreciation.
He was completely convinced that the woman his grandfather described was Samantha.
After all, with her elegant demeanor and striking appearance, who else in the volunteer team could possibly fit that description?
The fact that Mathew had wanted to introduce her to him was something Oliver wisely kept to himself.
Samantha chuckled softly and glanced up at Ryan.
"Now you’ve got me embarrassed."
Oliver stepped forward and patted Ryan on the shoulder.
"Ryan, you’ve really hit the jackpot."
Ryan casually raised an eyebrow, a faint smile touching his lips.
"Have I?"
Samantha looked at his refined, handsome features and couldn’t help blushing slightly.
Oliver was in an excellent mood today.
"My grandfather’s out of danger now, so tonight’s birthday party is back on. I’ll introduce Sam to a few television producers while we’re there."
Samantha’s eyebrows lifted in surprise.
Oliver was offering her valuable connections.
A tangible expression of gratitude.
But then...
A slight frown appeared on her face.
She thought back carefully.
None of the elderly patients she had seen today had seemed critically ill.
Yet Oliver had said Mathew’s condition had been extremely serious.
"What are you thinking about?"
Ryan lowered his gaze to look at her.
Oliver looked over as well.
Samantha gathered her thoughts.
Even if there was some misunderstanding, it hardly mattered.
The Brown family already viewed her as their benefactor.
That much was certain.
"Nothing. I just feel like choosing medicine was the right decision. It’s almost as though fate arranged for me to meet Mr. Brown and help him."
*****
Rose had been busy all day.
She had, however, made a new friend around her own age.
The woman came from a wealthy family and personally invited her to a gathering that evening.
Rose wasn’t opposed to making new friends, so she accepted.
A little after eight o’clock that night, she changed into a different outfit and took the resort shuttle to the entertainment hall.
The venue was packed with young people.
Every one of them came from wealth, influence, or both.
The moment Rose stepped inside, she felt her luck run out.
She immediately ran into Ryan and Samantha, who were entering through the side entrance.
Rose glanced at Samantha’s hand looped through Ryan’s arm and instinctively turned to leave.
Seeing Rose retreat so quickly, Samantha’s lips curved into a subtle, mocking smile.
Turning toward Oliver, who had just arrived, she asked casually, "Did you invite her?"
Oliver followed her gaze and immediately denied it.
"I’m not that ungrateful. You’re our family’s lifesaver. Why would I invite someone who might upset you?"
"Let’s sit down first."
Ryan paid no attention to Rose’s arrival.
He had no intention of dealing with her.
Only then did Samantha smile.
"Alright. Tonight, the birthday boy is the guest of honor."
Not long after entering, Rose realized the gathering was actually Oliver’s birthday party.
She hadn’t expected that a friend she’d only just met would invite her into a den full of wolves.
She immediately began thinking of an excuse to leave early.
Pop!
A bottle of champagne was opened at the front of the room.
Rose glanced over.
Oliver was in exceptionally high spirits today.
After all, Samantha had supposedly saved his grandfather.
"Oliver, what kind of birthday gift would you like?" Samantha asked with a smile.
Oliver knew Samantha’s eyes and heart were entirely focused on Ryan.
Those two simply needed someone to give them a little push.
After all, gratitude should be repaid properly.
He poured champagne into two glasses and set them before Ryan and Samantha.
Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted Rose standing outside the crowd.
A smile spread across his face.
Deliberately raising his voice so Rose could hear, he said, "No gift necessary. I just love seeing lovers end up together. Why don’t the two of you share a drink and then seal it with a kiss? How about that?"
