Chapter 270: Chapter 270 The Final Warning
Alicia was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.
Someone accompanied her.
After carrying Alicia downstairs, Rose was completely exhausted. She sat on the steps outside the building to catch her breath.
Just then, Leo hurried over after receiving the news.
Seeing Rose, he walked up and gently patted her on the head.
“How is she?”
Rose replied, “She had an allergic asthma attack that triggered a chain reaction affecting her heart. The ambulance arrived quickly, so she should be okay.”
Leo nodded. “That girl has asthma. She can’t be exposed to strong fragrances or irritating pollen. She was also born with a congenital heart condition, so she’s never been in good health. That’s one of the reasons she chose to study medicine.”
Leo knew all those details.
Rose wasn’t surprised.
After all, it was a small social circle. Alicia was both the daughter of the Taylor family and Chairman Morris’s granddaughter. It was only natural that people knew something about her.
“You seem to know Alicia quite well.”
Only then did Leo explain, “I’ve heard quite a few things over the years. Many people in our circle know about her condition.”
Rose slowly turned around.
Her gaze drifted upstairs.
Samantha had brought in such a large bouquet of flowers.
Normally, roses had only a faint fragrance, but that bouquet’s scent had been unusually strong.
If Samantha had known Alicia was allergic to strong floral scents...
She probably wouldn’t have brought them.
Rose couldn’t help thinking about it.
It had to have been an accident.
After all, those flowers had been a special gift from Ryan to Samantha.
It made no sense for Samantha to deliberately trigger Alicia’s condition.
As Leo prepared to leave, he suddenly asked, “Have you submitted your paper yet?”
Only then did Rose abruptly jump to her feet.
Ignoring her exhaustion, she hurriedly replied, “Yes—I already submitted it.”
Then she turned and ran upstairs.
When she returned to the laboratory, Samantha was gone.
Even the bouquet had disappeared.
Rose didn’t bother wondering where Samantha had gone.
She walked over to her laptop.
The screen still displayed the submission page.
She glanced at it and realized the paper had already been submitted.
Everything had happened so suddenly.
She must have accidentally clicked Submit while rushing to save Alicia.
She reached for the sent file, intending to review it one last time.
Footsteps sounded behind her.
“Rose, let’s talk.”
Recognizing Samantha’s voice—and not wanting anyone to see the contents of her computer—Rose immediately closed her laptop before turning around.
Samantha had returned.
Her phone was still in her hand, but she looked directly at Rose. “As you know, filming for my exclusive program has already begun. Besides featuring me, it also focuses on my family. The next episode will air live in a week, and I’d like to invite you to appear on the show with the Hill family.”
For a moment, Rose wondered if she’d heard correctly.
A cold smile tugged at her lips, while her beautiful eyes remained icy.
“What do I have to do with your family? Do I even have the last name Hill?”
Samantha lifted her chin slightly.
Although displeased by Rose’s attitude, she maintained her composure.
“Appearing on this show is something countless people dream of. Ryan and Oliver created it specifically for me. I’m generous enough to let you share the spotlight. Why are you so ungrateful?”
“Share your spotlight?”
Rose quietly repeated the words.
Then she let out a soft laugh. “So, are you letting me ‘share your spotlight,’ or are you planning to use me to create the illusion of a happy sisterly relationship and repair your public image?”
She tilted her head slightly. “Did you have your cerebellum removed or something?”
Samantha’s expression darkened instantly.
Rose was genuinely disgusted by Samantha’s so-called invitation.
She picked up her laptop and walked away.
This time, Samantha didn’t stop her.
As she watched Rose’s retreating figure, a strange smile flashed across her face.
Logan’s furious voice echoed through the phone.
“This is outrageous! Rose becomes more ungrateful the older she gets!”
Wasn’t this exactly the attitude of someone determined to sever all ties with the Hill family?
“She grew up in the countryside. It’s no surprise she’s so stubborn,” Samantha said with a faint smile.
“I finally understand now. Rose was simply born with a fate that brings misfortune to everyone around her. Caring about her only brings endless trouble.”
Logan sighed in disappointment.
Samantha raised an eyebrow.
That much was true.
What relatives did Rose even have left?
She was practically a lone star of calamity.
“Forget about her,” Logan continued. “The production team just sent over the schedule for the next episode. Unfortunately, it conflicts with your academic paper symposium at NYU. Will you be able to make both?”
Samantha slowly walked over to the desk where Rose had just been sitting and narrowed her eyes.
“I’ll make it.”
“We can film the first part with you and Mom. I’ll join the recording after the symposium.”
Logan chuckled. “Then why don’t you invite President Knight to appear on the show as well? Even a brief appearance would be wonderful.”
Thanks to the exclusive program, the Hill family’s popularity had skyrocketed.
Their business had more than doubled.
Without Ryan and Oliver pulling strings behind the scenes, they never would have gained access to such a prestigious platform.
If Ryan appeared alongside them, it would amount to publicly acknowledging Samantha.
By then, the Knight family would have a difficult time refusing to let Samantha marry into their family.
Hearing that, Samantha couldn’t suppress the smile spreading across her face.
A faint blush appeared on her cheeks.
She naturally understood what Logan was implying.
This was practically a foolproof plan.
With the show’s popularity—and immediately following her expected victory at the academic symposium—it would be a complete triumph in both reputation and career.
After all, she had Professor Max supporting her.
She was confident she’d take first place.
She was even more certain Ryan wouldn’t refuse to appear on the program with her.
As for Rose...
A meaningful smile slowly spread across Samantha’s lips.
What happened to Rose that day... would surely be quite the spectacle.
*****
Rose had returned to G.S. for a short stay.
Planning for the rollout of the brain tumor surgical robot was still underway, and she had plenty of work waiting for her.
She had just arrived at her office when her phone buzzed with a message from Alicia.
Alicia: [Thank you, Ms. Bennett. I’m okay now. It’s nothing serious, so don’t worry about me~]
Only after confirming Alicia was safe did Rose finally relax.
She replied: [Take good care of yourself.]
Just then, Diana called.
The moment Rose answered, Diana exploded.
“That Hill family is absolutely shameless!”
Rose slowed her movements as she organized the papers on her desk.
“What happened?”
Only then did Diana say, “I sent you a video clip. Watch it.”
Rose opened the video Diana had sent.
Sure enough, Logan and the rest of the Hill family were appearing on Samantha’s television program.
Logan looked immensely proud of his daughter, portraying their family as loving and harmonious while subtly promoting the Hill family’s businesses throughout the episode.
Then Daisy smiled at the camera. “What many of you may not know is that an antique shop called "Shine" has been doing exceptionally well lately. It’s actually managed by the Hill family. We originally intended it to be Samantha’s wedding gift, and we’re truly grateful for everyone’s love and support.”
She delivered the lie with perfect composure.
Without the slightest hesitation, she publicly portrayed the antique shop as Samantha’s personal property.
“How shameless!”
Diana was furious. “They’re deliberately painting Samantha as the perfect young lady from a loving family while stealing your property and advertising it as hers!”
“Why don’t they also mention that Samantha stole someone else’s husband?”
Rose remained silent.
She had already decided how she would handle the antique shop.
But now that the Hill family had made such a public spectacle of it, she couldn’t be certain Ryan wouldn’t simply hand the shop over to Samantha.
After all... he granted Samantha almost everything she wanted.
Rose spoke calmly. “I’ll call Ryan first.”
She ended the call with Diana.
Without hesitation, Rose dialed Ryan’s number.
He answered.
But he didn’t speak.
Rose hadn’t expected warmth from him anyway.
She spoke slowly and clearly. “I won’t allow Samantha or the Hill family to touch anything that belongs to the Bennett family.”
“What you choose to do with your life is none of my business. Whether you marry Samantha or anyone else doesn’t concern me.”
“But keep those people away from the Bennett family.”
She paused.
Then her voice turned even colder. “Ryan... if you’re unwilling to return the antique shop to me, then we’ll settle this in court.”
