Chapter 261: Chapter 261 Mommy, why are you crying?
Rose was startled.
She turned her head and locked eyes with Julia, who was standing in the doorway.
Julia was still carrying a thermos lunch box—she had obviously come to bring Trevor a late-night meal. But by sheer coincidence, she had overheard the two of them talking about getting married.
A delighted smile spread across her face as she hurried over.
"So, you two have really decided?" she asked excitedly.
Rose immediately felt a pang of guilt and instinctively glanced at Trevor.
If only she and Trevor knew about the arrangement, they wouldn’t have to deal with anyone else’s expectations.
But now that Julia had overheard them, everything had suddenly changed.
Their marriage wasn’t built on love, yet they would be accepting everyone else’s sincere blessings.
"I knew it! You two look perfect together." Julia beamed before turning to Rose. "Trevor may seem stiff and unromantic, and he throws himself into his work, but that only means he isn’t interested in wasting time on meaningless relationships. Once he commits to someone, he’ll be completely faithful."
Julia didn’t hold back in praising her son.
Rose could almost hear the unspoken message behind those words.
Julia must have guessed something about her situation.
Her previous marriage had ended in disaster, and Julia was trying to reassure her.
But the truth was, Rose didn’t care about any of that.
She and Trevor had already reached an agreement. It was nothing more than a mutually beneficial arrangement. If Trevor ever met someone he truly loved, she would never stand in his way.
But now that Julia knew...
It would only make things harder to end later.
After all, Rose had never planned to have a wedding, let alone announce a sham marriage to the public simply for the sake of securing Ariel’s custody.
"I heard you two talking about the wedding," Julia said cheerfully. "Here’s what we’ll do—leave all the wedding arrangements to me. Marriage isn’t just a formality, and I don’t want Rose to feel shortchanged."
She was in such high spirits that she made the decision almost immediately.
Rose didn’t want to ruin Julia’s happiness.
"Mrs. Robinson," she said gently, "the truth is, my marriage to Trevor is only a marriage of convenience. We’re not getting married because we’re in love. Although I can’t tell you the real reason right now, I don’t want you to be disappointed because of it."
She deliberately avoided mentioning that she was Ariel’s biological mother.
Until Ariel’s legal custody was secured, she couldn’t trust anyone completely.
Only by keeping the truth a closely guarded secret could she ensure Ryan remained completely unaware.
Julia fell silent for a moment, clearly surprised.
However, being open-minded, she quickly accepted it.
"How the two of you came to this decision isn’t important. The important thing is that you’re getting married. Feelings can grow over time. Since this marriage is real, then let’s celebrate it properly. There’s no reason to hide it—we’ll have all the traditions and celebrations that come with a wedding."
Smiling, she added, "After all, we can’t let Professor Rose’s wedding be anything less than spectacular."
A grand wedding...
Wouldn’t that be announcing it to the entire world?
Rose couldn’t bring herself to refuse outright.
Things had already reached this point.
She simply hadn’t expected Julia to be so understanding.
Julia raised an eyebrow at Trevor. "Leave the wedding to me. We’ll make it unforgettable. It’ll take some time to prepare—custom wedding gowns, wedding planning, custom-designed rings, all of that takes time. But I’ll make sure everything is ready within three months. If you don’t mind, the two of you can get your marriage license first."
Rose still felt as though she were surrounded by a thick fog.
It was as if fate—and their own choices—had quietly pushed them onto an entirely different path.
She realized that this matter could no longer be handled quietly behind the scenes.
It was completely unexpected.
She didn’t want the Robinson family to spend so much time, effort, and money celebrating a marriage built solely on mutual benefit.
But Julia didn’t seem to care.
"It’s only a wedding," Julia said with a smile. "There’s no need to feel guilty. It’s something both of you agreed to. As long as money can solve it, then it’s not a problem at all. You really don’t have to worry."
Only after she left with Trevor did Rose finally come back to her senses.
She didn’t regret her decision.
For Ariel’s sake, she was willing to risk everything.
Especially after the fake divorce certificate incident, which had shown her exactly what kind of people the Knight family truly were.
They would stop at nothing to get what they wanted.
If they had actually known Ariel existed, the consequences would have been catastrophic.
She wasn’t willing to gamble on even the slightest chance.
That night, Rose wanted nothing more than to see Ariel.
Trevor drove her to Dr. Nathan Hale’s home.
Just before they arrived, he spoke. "There’s no such thing as fairness when both sides enter an agreement willingly. Don’t forget, you’re now a professor at NYU. You’ll be a valuable asset to the Robinson family’s medical project in the second half of the year."
He didn’t want Rose to feel as though she owed him.
Understanding what he meant, Rose nodded.
Trevor parked the car. "I’ll be flying to the U.K. in the next couple of days to take care of the paperwork. Wait for my call."
"Okay."
Rose got out of the car.
She watched as Trevor drove away before walking inside.
Dr. Nathan looked surprised to see her so early.
"What brings you here this early?"
Rose smiled softly. "I want to stay with Ariel tonight."
Dr. Nathan was taken aback.
Rose had always been extremely cautious before. She had rarely dared to spend much time with Ariel.
But now...
Rose offered no explanation.
She quietly walked into Ariel’s room.
Ariel was a very well-behaved child. Every night, she went to bed promptly at nine o’clock.
It was already close to ten.
Careful not to wake her, Rose tiptoed to the bedside.
Looking at Ariel’s peaceful sleeping face, she gently climbed into bed and softly stroked her daughter’s delicate cheek.
In that instant, every bit of anxiety in her heart disappeared.
Just then, Ariel stirred awake, still half-asleep.
The moment she saw Rose, she instinctively wrapped her arms around her.
"Mommy... I had that dream again."
She always dreamed that her mother was sleeping beside her.
Since Rose often couldn’t stay with her because of circumstances beyond her control, she would make up little bedtime stories about the two of them sleeping together, hoping they would come true in her dreams.
Rose’s eyes instantly filled with tears.
She realized just how much she owed Ariel.
She had missed so much of her daughter’s childhood.
Gently patting her back, Rose whispered, "It’s not a dream. Mommy’s really here tonight, and I’m sleeping with you."
Ariel blinked sleepily for a moment.
When she finally realized Rose was really there, her eyes lit up with excitement.
"Mommy, you’re not busy anymore?"
Rose fought back the tears threatening to spill.
"I’m not anymore. From now on, I’ll do my best not to be so busy."
"Yay!"
Ariel was completely awake now.
Looking at her daughter’s soft, fair face, Rose suddenly asked, "Ariel... do you like your daddy?"
"I do," Ariel answered without hesitation. "Daddy is really nice to me. We never have a generation gap, and he’s always patient enough to play with me."
Rose’s eyes flickered slightly.
"What if..." she asked quietly, "one day you came to live with Mommy, and you couldn’t call him ’Daddy’ anymore? Would you be okay with that?"
She wanted to understand how Ariel might feel.
Just because she and Trevor were getting married didn’t mean they would stay married forever.
One day they might divorce, completely ending Ariel’s legal relationship with the Robinson family.
Eventually, Ariel would have to adjust.
From the very beginning, Rose and Trevor had never hidden the fact that they weren’t biologically related.
Ariel had always known her biological father was someone else.
She simply assumed he had either passed away or abandoned them, so she rarely asked about him.
Nor had she ever questioned the relationship between Rose and Trevor.
Those things were simply too complicated for a little girl to understand.
Ariel looked up at Rose.
She didn’t know why her mother was asking such a question.
After thinking about it carefully for a long moment, she answered seriously, "Actually, it doesn’t matter who my dad is, and it doesn’t matter who I like. The only thing that matters is who Mommy chooses. Whoever Mommy likes... I’ll like too."
Rose suddenly felt tears threatening to fall again.
She had been carrying so much for so long.
Especially everything that had happened recently.
It had completely worn down the emotional walls she had built around herself.
Silently, she pulled Ariel into a tight embrace, her eyes glistening with tears.
Ariel lay quietly in her mother’s arms.
She could sense Rose’s sadness.
In a soft voice, she whispered, "Mommy... why are you crying? Is it because of the daddy I’ve never met?"
