Chapter 10: Chapter 10 A Question She Couldn’t Answer

Rose had no time to argue with Samantha.

She walked over to the young mother and said gently, “I’m a doctor. It’ll be easier for me to perform first aid if I hold the child.”

The young mother hurriedly wiped away her tears and nodded gratefully.

Rose was a mother herself, so she fully understood how distraught the woman must feel at that moment.

She also had plenty of experience caring for children.

After taking the child into her arms, Rose ignored Samantha’s displeased glare and adjusted the little girl into a comfortable position so she could administer first aid more effectively.

Samantha’s expression darkened immediately.

A trace of sarcasm flashed through her eyes.

How could she not see that Rose was deliberately trying to show off in public?

Clearly, Rose wanted to ride on the credit and praise Samantha would receive after saving the child.

Samantha refused to stoop to Rose’s level or get caught up in such petty schemes.

She merely crouched down and carefully assessed the child’s condition.

Frowning slightly, she said, “The child is experiencing airway edema caused by an allergic reaction. I’ll perform emergency first aid first, then we need to get her to the hospital immediately.”

Rose said nothing.

Someone nearby immediately took out their phone to call an ambulance.

The child was indeed suffering from an allergic reaction.

But Samantha’s emergency treatment...

Samantha glanced around and asked, “Does anyone have an epinephrine auto-injector?”

No one answered.

Forcing herself to stay calm, Samantha checked the child’s airway and monitored her breathing while directing someone to call an ambulance.

Watching her, Rose frowned slightly.

The method itself wasn’t wrong, but in a critical situation like this, the effect would be limited.

It could even waste valuable time.

Rose had no intention of waiting any longer.

She gently pushed Samantha’s hand aside, carefully laid the little girl flat on the ground, and said softly to the mother, “Lift her legs for me.”

“What are you doing?” Samantha snapped after being interrupted in front of everyone. “Are you trying to hurt her?”

Rose ignored her completely.

Then she loosened the child’s scarf and jacket collar to keep the airway unobstructed.

Placing two fingers against the girl’s neck, Rose quickly assessed her pulse.

"She’s going into anaphylactic shock."

Rose quickly looked around, only to spot a small emergency medication pouch hanging from the girl’s backpack.

Inside was an epinephrine auto-injector

She then administers it.

The crowd around them stared at Rose in surprise and curiosity.

Even Ryan’s gaze lingered thoughtfully on her calm profile.

Samantha let out a cold laugh.

While Rose was treating the child, Samantha suddenly reached out and shoved her aside again.

Her face was icy as she rebuked her sharply.

“A human life is at stake. Please stop treating this like your personal stage!”

Oliver glanced over and finally seemed to understand what he thought Rose was trying to do.

With a mocking smile, he said, “Miss Bennett, even if you’re trying to imitate Miss Hill, you could never match her abilities. Why don’t you stop embarrassing yourself?”

To him, Rose was obviously jealous of the attention and admiration Samantha was receiving for saving someone, so she wanted to seize some credit and gain Ryan’s attention as well.

Oliver knew all too well the tricks women liked to play.

After being interrupted again and again, Rose finally lost patience.

Her delicate face turned completely cold.

“Are you brain-dead?”

“She’s awake!”

“The child woke up!”

Rose instantly ignored Oliver and turned around.

The little girl slowly opened her eyes.

Her watery, weak gaze softened Rose’s heart immediately.

More than half her anger vanished in an instant.

She thought of Ariel.

Her daughter often looked at her with the same innocent eyes while sweetly calling her “Mommy.”

Samantha stared at the now-conscious child, her lips pressing tightly together as she instinctively shot Rose a grave look.

She knew Rose had spent several years working in the emergency department, but her abilities should have been limited.

Otherwise, Rose would never have remained trapped in such a small hospital without advancing further.

But now...

It almost looked as though Rose had been the one who actually saved the child.

Then what about Samantha herself?

A shadow crossed Samantha’s eyes, though she remained silent.

Standing behind Ryan, Owen Brook immediately understood Samantha’s expression.

As Ryan’s long-time assistant, he smoothly stepped forward and spoke in a practiced tone.

“It’s all thanks to Miss Hill’s extensive experience. Her initial treatment simply took a little time to show results.”

Owen had worked beside Ryan for years.

Naturally, he recognized Rose.

But so what?

Mr. Knight had never cared much about Rose.

So why should he allow Rose to steal Miss Hill’s spotlight?

Hearing that, Samantha’s brows relaxed slightly.

Her smiling gaze landed on Ryan’s refined features because she knew perfectly well that Owen’s words reflected Ryan’s intentions.

From beginning to end, Ryan remained expressionless.

He neither stopped Owen nor corrected him.

Nor did his gaze linger on Rose for long.

His silence was practically an acknowledgment.

Oliver glanced at Ryan’s indifferent expression and found the situation even more amusing.

He looked at Rose, who was still kneeling on the ground in a rather disheveled state.

After all her effort, she had still gained nothing.

Most of the people present were business investors in the medical industry rather than reporters, so they immediately understood the unspoken dynamics.

Many quickly joined in.

“Indeed, it was thanks to Miss Hill’s calm handling of the situation that the child recovered so quickly.”

“No wonder she’s the woman standing beside Mr. Knight. Her excellence speaks for itself.”

Samantha curved her lips into a modest smile and walked over to Ryan’s side.

Looking up at him gently, she laughed softly.

“You’re all praising me too much.”

Then she turned toward the young mother and said warmly, “As long as your child is safe, that’s all that matters.”

Rose hadn’t expected Samantha to openly take credit for it.

But she understood how these social dynamics worked.

This was simply Ryan’s way of giving Samantha honor and recognition.

Fortunately, the child’s condition had already improved significantly.

Rose couldn’t be bothered to fight over something as meaningless as credit.

Doctors saved lives to help people—not for applause or recognition.

Nor did she care to watch everyone continue flattering Samantha.

The cold winter wind cut straight through the city like a blade.

Rose quickly helped the child to put on her jacket again and wrapped a scarf around her neck.

She even tugged the girl’s shirt sleeves out from under her jacket and adjusted her clothing to make her more comfortable, every movement gentle and familiar.

The young mother looked at Rose gratefully and suddenly asked, “Miss, are you married? Do you have children too? You seem to know how to take care of a child even better than I do.”

The moment those words were spoken, Rose’s entire body stiffened instinctively.

Alarm bells rang loudly in her mind.

Even the hairs on the back of her neck rose slightly.

She could feel a probing gaze land on her from behind.

Not far away, Ryan had clearly heard the question as well.

His sharp gaze passed silently through the crowd and settled almost imperceptibly on the back of Rose’s head.
