Chapter 33: Another deal with Ezio
Soul fragments flowed into my core as the system confirmed the kill.
"System."

"Huh, only eight fragments after all that? What a scam." I huffed and closed the system.
"Ugh!" I covered my nose with my hand as the smell from the giant mantis’s dead body hit me.
"You really did train your scythe technique using praying mantises." Ezio said, already standing beside me. "Even I wouldn’t have thought of that."
I shrugged, hand still over my nose. "It’s not that impressive honestly. Anyone could’ve figured it out. Praying mantises have scythe-like front legs, it’s pretty obvious."
"Yeah, but they wouldn’t be insane enough to do what you did — never having wielded a scythe before and then going straight into fighting a whole group of them. That was just asking for death." Ezio shook his head and chuckled.
"I’m just built different." Then I added,
"What did you think about how I handled them?"
"Why do you want my opinion?" Ezio raised an eyebrow.
"You’re the most experienced one here. Of course I’d ask you."
"Well, you did pretty well, to be honest. You never touched your katana, only the scythe, a weapon you were barely familiar with, which also answered my question about why you want to use multiple weapons.
"I’ll give you credit for adapting to the environment and managing to expose the mantises hiding in their natural habitat, first using sand, even if that method was a bit impractical." Ezio closed his eyes and touched his chin thoughtfully.
"And then you recognized that it was impractical and came up with something better, using your darkness to create a detection technique for a specific range around you. That was genuinely clever."
I tapped the side of my head with a finger as he mentioned that, which earned me a scoff.
Ezio opened his eyes. "That was probably the highlight of your fights here, but another thing worth noting is how fast you learn."
He frowned slightly. "That ability of yours is a flat-out cheat. Your mastery of the scythe increased after every single exchange. The more you fought, the sharper you got."
A breeze drifted through and lifted our hair, Ezio’s cloak rippling behind him. frёeωebɳovel.com
"At the start you were a complete beginner and kept getting cut up by the mantises, but after each mistake you improved, and the injuries kept decreasing until they couldn’t touch you at all anymore. If [Clear Mind] isn’t a cheat, I don’t know what is."
He was right, and I completely agreed.
My skills were improving at an abnormal rate thanks to [Clear Mind]’s ability to push my brain beyond a normal human’s capacity. The Awakened already had enhanced cognitive function, but my ability pushed it even further.
So every time I made an error with the scythe and suffered for it, my brain would immediately analyze what went wrong and work out a solution in seconds.
On top of that, it boosted my memory, letting me memorize the mantises’ scythe movements from a single look and replay them in my head as many times as needed, helping me work them into my own movements.
It really was a cheat.
I wasn’t sure what else it could do yet, but that alone was already ridiculous.
And that’s exactly why it was important to test your abilities thoroughly. You never knew what potential was sitting there waiting to be found.
"Heh, which means with my ability I’ll probably have unlimited growth and there won’t be much I can’t learn." I said, my voice coming out muffled behind my hand.
"I wouldn’t say unlimited, since your potential depends mainly on the grade of your story. Speaking of which — wait, I never actually asked. What grade is your Main Story?" Ezio asked, eyes narrowing.
I hadn’t told Ezio or anyone else the grade of my story, and for good reason.
Revealing your Main Story’s grade, rank, and capabilities to just anyone was a rookie mistake that could get you killed if you lacked the backing to protect yourself.
Not everyone celebrated someone else’s potential. Plenty would rather stamp it out.
In Ezio’s case though, he was a Shadow Guardian. He couldn’t harm a Laurent child, especially not the one he was assigned to, and even if he tried, the mana contract he had signed would make him regret it.
That was why I trusted mana contracts above all else. Never just trust people, and you’d avoid most backstabs.
It wouldn’t hurt to tell him.
"Mythic grade." I said.
Ezio stared at me blankly. His face was completely expressionless.
Had I shocked him that much?
Then he broke into laughter and stuck his pinky in his ear.
"Hahaha, I think I misheard you. Or you’re joking. Say that again?"
"My Main Story is Mythic grade." I said, keeping my expression serious.
"I still don’t believe you. Do you have any idea how rare it is for someone to awaken a Mythic grade Main Story?" Ezio patted my right shoulder.
"The first and last person in the Laurent family to awaken something like that was the very founder of your bloodline. So no. That can’t be true."
It was true that the founder had awakened a Mythic grade Main Story, but they never reached anywhere near its full potential, dying of old age before they could.
So Ezio’s disbelief made sense.
Someone who awakened that grade had the highest potential in the entire world.
If I told him right now that I had another one which was probably of the same rank, he would probably have a stroke.
Since he wasn’t going to take my word for it, I saw an opportunity.
I smiled. "Let’s sign a mana contract and make a deal."
"Huh, why?" Ezio frowned.
"You won’t believe my words, so what better way to prove it than a contract?"
"Fine. What are the conditions?"
I let go of my nose, fought down the urge to vomit, and pulled out a mana contract and a pen from my spatial ring.
I started writing and read aloud as I went.
"If I am lying about the grade of my Main Story, the bet contract between us becomes null, and I will give Ezio Schattern all the money he was originally set to win, plus do whatever he asks for the remainder of our trip."
"Oh, that’s a good condition." Ezio smiled.
"However, if I am telling the truth, Ezio must do whatever I ask for the same period of time." I finished writing.
I bit my finger and pressed it to the signature line, leaving a blood print.
"Here. Read it over and confirm the conditions." I handed it to Ezio.
