Chapter 3: Yves Noctis Laurent [1]
"System."
A black screen popped up in my head. This was the system that every Awakened unlocked the moment they awakened.
So I wondered what kind of powers this kid had awakened.

Yves Noctis Laurent, huh?
Quite the cool name, not going to lie. But even so...
"Yves" was a name I didn’t recognize. No matter how much I searched my memories, there was no such character in my book.
If it weren’t for Yves’s memories, I wouldn’t have understood what was happening.
Yves was the son of one of the Duke’s concubines. So it made sense why I knew nothing about him. When I wrote about the Laurent family, I never specified how many concubines the Duke had, nor did I go too deep into it.
I looked at the titles.
[Unwanted Child]
Eish, that was quite the harsh title. I felt pity for how Yves was treated in this family. A family that didn’t care about you was something I had never known.
The Rank and Soul Rank weren’t really that important right now since I was at the very beginning of Awakening. The one soul fragment that had been added was probably because I had killed the maid.
Everything looked normal until my eyes landed on Story Fragments.
"What the hell?" I muttered out loud in confusion.
Why were there two of them?
Almost every awakened character had only one Main Story and one reservoir for Story Fragments. By "almost" I mean 99% of the world’s population. Only 1% had awakened two reservoirs, meaning two Main Stories, which was extremely rare.
The main character of my book was one of them, along with a few other characters.
But this...this was something else entirely. Another character with two Main Stories? And I knew nothing about it?
It genuinely didn’t make sense at all.
It meant that Yves had the potential to awaken two Main Stories from the very beginning, but never managed to since he had been killed by the maid — not until I interfered.
It was absurd, but it sounded right.
And bloody hell, I had to collect 1000 fragments for the second Main Story?
What in the actual hell?!
That would take an eternity. However, the sheer number of fragments required meant one thing.
It was a High Rank Main Story — the highest, at that. But even the highest rank in the very early stages didn’t require that many fragments. I would know, since I was the one who set it all up.
I mentally selected the first Main Story and read the description.

✧ Grade: Mythic
✧ Rank: Awakened
✧ Story Fragments: 0/150
I’ll be damned. A smile formed on my lips.
A Mythic Main Story — the highest grade at that.
This boy Yves was really something else. What a shame.
Story Description: A boy who yearns for nothing but death. To him, death was warmth despite its cold embrace, but the world denied his wish. However, his intent towards death was so strong that it reached the tapestry of death itself, granting him a glimpse of it.
Abilities: [Esoteric Darkness Manipulation], [Emotion Manipulator], [Clear Mind]
Quite the description. But what kind of abilities were those?
I could manipulate darkness — wait, esoteric? What did that mean exactly?
[Esoteric Darkness Manipulation]
Description: You can manipulate not just darkness but the very concept of it, physically and spiritually.
I crossed my arms.
"Oh nah, this has to be broken."
I didn’t fully understand the spiritual part, but I had a hunch.
I willed darkness to form in my hand in the shape of a knife and, in no time, a black knife made of pure darkness materialized in my palm.
I gripped it. Hard to the touch, just like a real knife.
Very cool.
I moved on to the other abilities.
[Emotion Manipulator]
Description: [You are a child of darkness. You can detect all the negative emotions of any being, as well as instill them.]
I blinked several times at the description.
An emotion-type ability that affected not one but all negative emotions?
Wasn’t that too much?
Sure, it had its limits — but that didn’t make it any less dangerous in the right hands.
From what I had seen so far, this kid could have been the main character of this very book. He had the abilities to back it up.
I checked the last ability, a passive one that allowed me to keep composure and think rationally in high-stress situations. That was going to be very useful going forward.
Finally, I reached the last entry — the second Main Story — and funnily enough, it had no name.
Story Name: ■■■
Grade: ■■■
Rank: ■■■
Story Fragments: 0/1000
Story Description: ■■■
Abilities: [Eyes of The King]
No name. Even after rubbing my eyes, same result. The grade, rank and description were all blocked out — only the story fragments and the ability were legible.
Nothing but boxes where the information should have been. Were they hidden?
Most likely.
But why, I didn’t know.
I had an ominous feeling that this was the doing of the Man in Yellow. It had to be.
I read the description for [Eyes of The King] and, well — it was not at all what I had expected.
Description: The eyes of the King can see through the veils of deceit and illusions. When activated, you cannot fall under any type of mental manipulation, complete immunity.
Holy molly!
My eyes shook with surprise and shock.
This was something else entirely. To have complete immunity to mental-type abilities as to be almost invincible in this world. Later in the stages of the story, people with terrifying mental abilities appeared, and those were the most terrifying to fight against and a pain in the ass.
So yeah, whether this was Yves’s power or the Man in Yellow’s interference, it was just too overpowered.
Seeing that there was not other abilities and whatsoever, I closed the system.
I looked down, the maid’s body was now now floating lifelessly on the water. I spared her one last glance before coming out of the water and headed towards the mansion.
I needed to get dry, I was kind of starting to feel cold
