Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Getting Small Amount of Supplies
The question came out from the previously quiet Ye Lanxi just like that.
Fortunately, the twins from the third branch had fallen asleep, huddling together with a blanket in the corner of the carriage.
They were quite well-behaved and didn’t make any fuss.
Everyone stopped what they were doing and turned to Ye Chengde. They had deliberately waited for him to finish eating first before bringing up this topic.
The stern expression on the man faded slightly, replaced by a look of conflict. His gaze settled on Ye Zhiqiu.
"Only Qiu’er understands the whole affair. It’s better to wait for him to wake up and see what truly happened." A deep frown marred Ye Chengde’s forehead.
Seeing him unwilling to talk about it, they also didn’t insist further.
Ye Chengde exited the carriage. "Go get some rest. We will need to walk again tomorrow."
He gave his wife a squeeze on the hand, encouraging her before he left. Shen Jingyi slept on the carriage with her children, minus Ye Lingrui who followed his father to sleep outside.
Nearing midnight, everyone finally closed their eyes.
Ye Lingyue looked around, tiptoeing carefully to check if everyone had fallen asleep. Everyone’s breathing was steady, deep into sleep from exhaustion.
She carefully jumped from the carriage.
A few guards were keeping watch outside, making sure no one escaped or caused trouble.
After seeing today’s dinner, she realized she had missed bringing one of the most important things.
Food.
The coarse steamed buns were unpalatable. Not to mention thin porridge that might as well be called water. Her limited space could still store a few sacks of rice. They would be useful in an emergency.
Ye Lingyue’s eyes scanned the guards who were still awake. Some of them were either sitting near a fireplace or walking around the rows of ox carts and horse carriages.
"I wonder how long this journey will be. Once I receive the bonus, I will use it to go to that newly opened pavilion..."
Her back was pressed against the carriage, her breathing became faint. They were a few meters away from her. Once they walked a little closer, they might see her.
"Lift your oil lamp that way, I think I see something," one of the guards muttered, suddenly stopping.
His companion also stopped dead in his tracks, lifting the oil lamp to the direction he was pointing at.
It was empty.
"Huh? Am I just seeing things?" The guard said in doubt.
His companion snorted. "You are probably seeing things. The food we have given to these people had a small amount of sleeping drug in them. The Ye family members should all be sleeping now."
Ye Lingyue listened to their words with raised eyebrows. It was no wonder they fell asleep so quickly after taking the food.
"Sleeping drug? Will it be dangerous for them?"
"Why do you care so much? It’s not us who had taken the food." The other guard was quite chatty. He didn’t even hesitate to spill his secret. "I bought that item in the hovels in the eastern district. I chanced upon that place... ouch."
"Tsk, you stumbled again," His companion jeered. Still, he held out his hand for the other guard to take.
The guard, who had put the sleeping drug in the food, stumbled on something and fell face-plant in the ground. His face was immediately full of wounds and bruises.
Ye Lingyue lifted the corners of her mouth smugly.
Seeing the injured guard in a hurry to wash his face, she also jumped away, nimbly avoiding the other patrolling guards.
It was less than a day ever since she had been in this body, but she had become more familiar with it. Her senses weren’t that bad.
There wasn’t even a complicated temporary synchronization process that happened the moment she took over Shen Wuqing’s body.
This place wasn’t that far from a night market. After she wrapped her face with a veil, she went headed there. It took her around fifteen minutes before she arrived.
"Miss..." The stall owner was stunned when he saw a lone female in the night market.
Usually, it was male servants who would go out and run errands for their masters. The lady in front of her looked a little unkempt, but she was obviously a lady from a noble family.
He could easily spot one by judging from their behaviors and body languages.
"What do you need, Miss?" The large uncle still professionally attended to her.
"Uncle, do you sell some sacks of rice here?" Ye Lingyue asked.
The uncle was a little confused. "Miss, we don’t sell rice, but we sell other ingredients like flour, beans..." He listed several more ingredients.
"Give me two sacks of flour."
A moment later, the dumbfounded stall seller watched as Ye Lingyue lifted the heavy flour sacks to her shoulder.
Before leaving, she inquired him again. "Do you know the vendor selling rice?"
"Um... they are a few, but they are closed during the night." The uncle pointed to some directions.
Ye Lingyue thanked him and left the place with the flour. Once she was out of everyone’s sight, she put the two sacks of flour and stretched her arms.
Her face radiated unhappiness. Even just two small sacks of flour can make her arms felt sore all over.
She rested for a full minute before she headed to the vendor selling rice. Although they were already closed... Ye Lingyue still broke inside and took five rice sacks.
Of course, she didn’t forget to pay. She simply pulled a few taels of silver and put them on the table.
After she was done, she returned to the exile team’s camping site. Her eyelids felt a little heavy. It was probably the effect of the sleeping drugs the guard had put into their food.
Her current body’s smelling sense wasn’t good, and therefore, she failed to detect it. The drug was tasteless.
Ye Lingyue was prepared to slip back into the carriage. However, she heard a scream.
"Fire! There’s fire!"
"Wake up, wake up!"
There was a fire that started burning everything.
