Chapter 60: Chapter 60: I Don’t Have Anyone to Call

"A bunch of useless idiots."

Benjamin said it with a helpless sigh.

Anika said softly, "I’m sorry, sir! This was my mistake. I thought Starlight’s light-based abilities would be enough to handle most Supervillains.

"But because of what former CEO Edgar did, the number of Supervillains has increased."

"The company is seriously short on high-level combat personnel right now. You’re the only one who can step in."

Then Anika bowed deeply. "Please go and support Starlight."

Benjamin did not scold her any further. "Give me the files. Let me see."

In truth, though, Benjamin was getting a little itchy for a fight.

Aside from that satisfying battle with Homelander against thirty-odd Supes earlier, he had not had many chances to fight. And no, last night’s hand-to-hand with Stormfront did not count.

Anika quickly handed over the tablet in her hand.

Benjamin lowered his head and looked.

On the screen was an extremely blurry street surveillance video.

In the footage, a man in a ragged hoodie stood in the middle of the street.

The ground was covered in a thick layer of ice.

As he suddenly swung both hands, countless sharp icicles condensed out of thin air.

Standing in front of him was Starlight, locked in battle with him.

Starlight’s body had already been frostbitten by the ice.

Then a massive pillar of ice shot up from the ground and slammed Starlight away, sending her crashing straight through a brick wall.

In the footage, Starlight’s condition was unknown, though she was most likely still alive.

By Benjamin’s estimate, Starlight’s Super Defense was at least Lv4, maybe even close to Lv5.

Her offensive ability was nothing impressive, but she really could take a beating. Even Butcher’s large-caliber sniper rifle could not do much damage to her.

In her fights with other people, plenty of them had beaten Starlight badly without causing her much real harm.

As for this Supervillain who controlled frost...

He had to admit, that power was pretty strong.

At least in the The Boys world, it definitely counted as a top-tier Supervillain ability with terrifying destructive power.

However, this person did not seem to have appeared in the original storyline at all.

But that was not strange. This world was too big.

The original storyline only showed the tip of the iceberg. He was probably just never mentioned. freeweɓnovel.cøm

Most likely, he had been dealt with by Homelander, Maeve, or some other stronger Supe.

Across the vast United States, and even the world, there were plenty of Supervillains created by the Compound V his dear son had previously sent out.

...

Becca and Ryan’s cottage.

Click.

The door of the small wooden house was gently pushed open.

Homelander walked in.

On the living room carpet, Becca was building blocks with Ryan.

The smile on Becca’s face quickly stiffened.

Homelander could not be bothered to look at Becca. His gaze went straight to Ryan, who was playing with the blocks.

"Hey, Ryan."

Homelander greeted him, then bent down slightly and waved a baseball glove he had gotten from who knew where.

"It’s a nice day. Want to go play some baseball with me in the yard?"

Ryan froze for a moment.

The little guy first looked up at Homelander, his bright blue eyes sparkling with excitement and anticipation.

But he did not agree right away. Instead, he very thoughtfully turned to look at Becca beside him.

Seeing the longing in her son’s eyes made Becca deeply uncomfortable.

But there was nothing she could do. She knew she could not stop him.

"Go play, Ryan."

Becca took a deep breath and forced out a smile.

...

On the lawn in the yard, father and son began playing baseball.

To be honest, Homelander was still a little nervous.

This was his first time playing baseball with his son.

And he had to control his strength carefully so he would not hurt him.

...

"Great catch, Ryan! You’re a genius!"

Watching Ryan clumsily catch that slow-moving baseball with his glove, Homelander praised him loudly without holding back.

Seeing his son happily play baseball with him, Homelander felt nothing but happiness.

So this was what it felt like to be a father...

...

Happy times were always short-lived.

Night fell.

After his bath, Ryan lay obediently in his little bed, dressed in his pajamas.

The orange bedside lamp cast a soft glow.

The bedroom door was gently pushed open, and Homelander walked in quietly.

"Ryan."

Homelander looked around the room. Thinking back to what he had observed over the past couple of days, he asked,

"I noticed... you don’t seem to have a phone?"

"No." Ryan shook his head, his clear eyes filled with a trace of innocent confusion. "Mom said I don’t need a phone."

"Don’t listen to your mom. You’re a big boy now. You need this."

Homelander took out a sleek black box from behind his back and handed it to Ryan.

It was the latest top-of-the-line iPhone.

Ryan’s eyes widened.

"Cool... fuck! Thank you!"

The air suddenly went quiet for one second.

"Mm-hmm... You’re welcome, son."

Seeing his son’s delighted smile, Homelander smiled too, even though Ryan had accidentally sworn.

Forget it. It did not matter. His mother could be the one to deal with that headache.

Ryan excitedly tore open the packaging, holding the iPhone in both hands as he swiped left, tapped right, and refused to put it down.

But after a while, the light in Ryan’s eyes gradually dimmed.

He raised his head, and his small face showed an unmistakable mix of disappointment and confusion.

"But..."

Ryan’s voice became very quiet.

"I guess... I don’t really have anyone to call."

Ryan had grown up in this closed-off community with no friends and no classmates.

The only "neighbors" and "teachers" he knew were all actors arranged by Vought International.

He now had the most advanced communication device in the world.

Only to realize that, in this world, he was an isolated island with no signal.

The smile on Homelander’s face froze. It was as if he had seen his childhood self again.

Back then, he had not even had a single toy, let alone a phone.

Only a blanket.

And back then, of course, he had not had anyone to call either.

Homelander took a deep breath, then said,

"You can call me. Or... call your grandpa."

"Whenever you want to talk... or you’re scared... or you just feel like you need your dad and grandpa... call us. Anytime. Day or night."

Ryan nodded and glanced at Homelander, his heart filling with a sense of security.

As Homelander spoke, he sat down beside Ryan’s bed.

"Ryan, do you know? Before your grandpa came back, I never really had a mom or dad. Not in any real sense..."

"Wait, where was Grandpa back then?"

Seeing Homelander looking a little sad, Ryan asked curiously.

"He was persecuted by bad people back then. I was too... We only met recently, the two of us. Father and son."

Homelander said.

"Then do you play baseball with Grandpa now?" Ryan asked.

Homelander froze for a moment, then said,

"No. But your grandpa and I have gone out for barbecue together, and we’ve played with model airplanes together. I never got to experience those things when I was little, but even experiencing them now, I still... feel very happy."

Ryan sat on the bed and quietly looked at Homelander. He could tell that Homelander really was happy.

But then another question came up.

"Barbecue? What’s barbecue?"

Ryan asked again, full of curiosity.

Children were always like that, curious about one thing after another.

Homelander looked at Ryan. He had originally planned to say good night and leave, but a bold idea suddenly appeared in his mind.

Why not just pick him up now and take him to eat barbecue with his grandpa?

"Ryan, do you want to try barbecue? I might take you out for a bit, if you want to. Of course... if you don’t want to, we can go some other time."

A spark of eagerness flashed in Ryan’s eyes.

At that very moment, Becca, who was standing at the doorway, turned extremely grim.
