Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Edgar’s Death
Homelander watched Benjamin prepare to kill him and almost told him to wait, but he quickly realized something.
Now that his father had taken control of Vought, what information could possibly be out of reach?
And even if Edgar refused to talk, there were others who knew, like Dr. Vogelbaum.
Besides, right up to the final moment, that old bastard Edgar was still trying to negotiate. Still believing that anything could be traded with leverage and terms.
Utterly ridiculous.
...
Benjamin tightened his fingers.
The sound of Edgar’s skull cracking burst through the silent office.
Several mid-level executives went pale as paper.
Ashley clenched her fingers until her knuckles turned white, but she did not move. Her eyes stayed fixed on Edgar’s corpse.
Soon, Edgar’s body slid down from the back of the chair. His suit crumpled, his tie twisted to one side, and his elbow knocked over the whiskey glass.
Homelander stood in the doorway, staring at Edgar’s corpse as the red glow in his eyes slowly faded.
Before long, the police arrived.
After receiving a call from Edgar himself, the NYPD rushed to Vought Tower as fast as they could. More than a dozen officers in bulletproof vests filed out of the elevator.
When they pushed open the office door, Edgar was lying on the floor, already cold.
The lead officer looked at the body on the floor, then looked up at Benjamin and Homelander. His mouth opened slightly, but he had no idea what to say.
Ashley knew it was her turn.
She walked forward slowly, straightened the collar of her suit, and greeted the officers with her most polished professional smile.
"Officers, I’m truly sorry you came all this way for nothing. Mr. Edgar just committed suicide by smashing his head into the wall." ƒгeewёbnovel.com
She raised a finger and pointed to a barely noticeable dent in the wall beside the desk.
"He couldn’t bear the thought of the prison sentence waiting for him. In a state of extreme remorse and fear, he chose to end his own life. None of us had time to stop him. It’s... truly tragic."
Ashley continued, her voice full of sorrow.
The officer looked at her, then at Benjamin and Homelander, then at Edgar on the floor with his shattered skull.
He wanted to say something... but forget it.
Edgar had gotten what he deserved.
In the end, he only waved his hand and had his subordinates take photos, make a record, and remove the body.
Ashley stood at the office door and watched as the medical examiner loaded Edgar’s body onto a stretcher and carried it out.
On the surface, she maintained her professional composure, but the way her chest kept rising and falling gave her away.
From a small manager under Madelyn who was ordered around at will, to taking over Madelyn’s position overnight, to now becoming Vought’s public-facing CEO, she had bet on the right side at every single turn.
She had chosen Soldier Boy. She had chosen Homelander.
And now, Stan Edgar’s body was being zipped into a body bag and pushed into the elevator.
From this moment on, the top of Vought Tower belonged to her!
On the surface, of course.
But Ashley was still beyond excited.
In the hallway, Benjamin leaned against the wall, his shield by his feet.
Homelander stood beside him with his arms crossed.
Maeve and Starlight stood at the other end of the hallway. Maeve was quietly saying something to Starlight.
Starlight said, "Maeve, we should be able to become real superheroes now, right?"
Maeve nodded, a light appearing in her eyes as well.
She had given up for far too long. Now, she felt that maybe she could become a real superhero too. Maeve felt the way she had years ago, when she had first joined Vought.
Homelander looked at everyone in the hallway and suddenly spoke.
"Dad."
"Hm?"
"You just said, ’Stop being so fucking sentimental.’"
"What about it? Spit it out if you’ve got something to say."
"You were being sentimental too."
The corner of Homelander’s mouth shifted slightly, revealing a smile.
"You hugged me first."
Benjamin was silent for a moment before retorting, "That’s because you were about to cry, and I couldn’t stand looking at it."
"I wasn’t crying."
"Your eyes were red."
"That was from the laser eyes."
"Fine. Laser eyes, then."
Benjamin gave him a light shove, then turned and walked toward the elevator.
"Let’s go. Barbecue tonight. You’re paying. Everyone else, follow."
Homelander followed, his steps light.
Deep scratched his head and asked, "Sir, can we come too?"
When he saw Maeve and Starlight following along, Deep froze.
Homelander was actually treating everyone to dinner.
Oh shit. He had never experienced this before.
"Um, I don’t eat seafood," Deep added, then quickly followed them.
