Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Novichok Is the Only Option
Golden light burst from the center of his chest in an instant, like a sun that had been suppressed for forty years finally tearing through its shell.
The light pierced through every gap between the branches and leaves of the maple grove.
The air began to tremble. Some kind of energy was about to break free.
The first member of Payback to react was Mindstorm.
His pupils suddenly widened, and he staggered back two steps. The back of his plaid shirt was instantly soaked through with cold sweat.
"Run!"
His voice cracked from the shout, but it was already too late.
A golden Shockwave erupted outward from Benjamin, roaring forward like a miniature star going off.
Around the Nuclear Blast, a visible ripple spread through the air, expanding outward with devastating speed.
The ground of the maple grove was ripped up in whole sheets. Dirt, gravel, and snapped tree roots tumbled through the air.
A rusty pickup truck parked beside the room was lifted by the Shockwave, flipped twice in midair, then smashed into the wall of a nearby abandoned hotel. The wall collapsed with a thunderous crash.
...
Some of the people there had been far enough away and fast enough to run.
Some had not been so lucky.
There were more than thirty people present.
Nearly half were directly caught in the Shockwave.
Quite a few of that half were mercenaries hired by Vought.
They did not even have time to turn and run before the golden light swallowed them.
Once the light swept over them, they vanished.
Because Nuclear Blast represented absolute destruction. Anyone without enough physical durability or Super Defense would be wiped out on the spot. Those with enough Super Defense would lose their powers instead. It was an absurdly powerful, almost broken move.
Based on Benjamin’s guess, they would need at least Super Defense Lv4. Otherwise, they would be erased along with the Nuclear Blast.
After releasing the Nuclear Blast, Benjamin felt a little drained.
Fortunately, perhaps because Nuclear Blast had risen to Lv4, he was not especially weak.
At the very least, compared to the first time he had unleashed the Nuclear Blast, Benjamin was in much better shape.
Benjamin looked around.
Some people were still alive.
They struggled up from the ground, staring down at their hands, their faces full of confusion and fear.
Some could no longer feel their powers. One tried to ignite flames in his palm, but nothing appeared.
Another tried to activate the metallic layer on his skin, but his skin remained soft.
Their Compound V receptors had been burned away by the nuclear radiation. Their powers had been completely erased from their genetic chains, turning them back into ordinary humans forever.
Unless they were injected with Compound V again, they would never regain their abilities.
Benjamin walked over unhurriedly, one step after another, crushing the heads of the Supes who had been reduced to ordinary people.
Soon, Benjamin noticed that Crimson Countess had just barely escaped the range of the Shockwave.
She was lying behind the upturned roots of a maple tree, half her face caked with mud, her mouth full of sand and bits of grass.
She raised her head and saw the scene left behind after the Shockwave passed.
The truck that had been thrown aside. The Supes lying motionless on the ground. Some of them had their heads crushed by Soldier Boy as he walked past.
Then she saw the golden afterglow still slowly fading from Soldier Boy’s chest.
"Damn it..."
Her voice shook violently, full of fear.
"It’s... it’s the lab. The Russian Laboratory! They modified Soldier Boy’s abilities!"
"Correct. Now I’m going to blow your fucking head off."
The moment she heard that, Crimson Countess’s scalp went numb. Soldier Boy was running toward her.
She made an instinctive judgment.
Soldier Boy did not have Super Speed. His speed was the same as an ordinary person’s. He was just an old soldier. Her speed could not compare to a Speedster like A-Train, but she was still much faster than an ordinary person.
She could run from him.
She had run from him before.
But as she ran, Crimson Countess realized something was wrong.
Benjamin was getting closer.
In a straight sprint, Benjamin was more than twice as fast as what she had seen with her own eyes forty years ago.
He was still far slower than most Supes with Super Speed, but for an old soldier who had once been as slow as an ordinary person, this speed was already unreasonable.
Shit, fuck, don’t come any closer!
...
In the end, Crimson Countess failed to get away.
Benjamin closed in and threw a punch. This was not the kind of restrained blow he used when bullying someone.
His fist smashed straight through Crimson Countess’s face.
Her nasal bone shattered first, then her cheekbones. Finally, the entire structure of her skull collapsed under his fist.
Her body flipped once through the air and landed heavily in the mud, with nothing left above the neck.
In truth, as Soldier Boy’s ex-girlfriend, Crimson Countess should not, logically speaking, have been bullied by him or hated him.
Unfortunately, in the original body’s memories, the original body had discovered that Crimson Countess had cheated on him. Not with just one person, but with several, including white and black men. That was why the original body had bullied Crimson Countess.
To be honest, where did she get the nerve to resent him?
She was lucky he had not beaten her to death back then.
...
At the edge of the maple grove, Mindstorm crouched behind a maple tree that had been snapped in half by the Nuclear Blast. His forehead was covered in sweat, and the armpits of his plaid shirt were soaked through.
He had almost been caught in that Shockwave just now. He had only survived because he had been standing the farthest away.
He looked at Crimson Countess’s corpse, then at Benjamin as he drew back his fist and straightened up. His lips trembled several times.
"Holy fuck..."
His voice was hoarse, as if he were talking to himself, but everyone nearby who was still alive heard him.
"When the hell did Soldier Boy get this fast?"
No one answered him.
But that was exactly what everyone wanted to know.
Speed had once been Soldier Boy’s greatest weakness. He could withstand any attack, but his movement speed was no different from an ordinary person’s.
Now that weakness was being filled in bit by bit right in front of them.
Compared to other Supes with Super Speed, he was still slow.
But compared to the Soldier Boy from before, he was already far, far faster.
The Russian Laboratory had not killed him. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
The Russian Laboratory had made him even more terrifying.
...
"Use the Novichok!"
Mindstorm shouted.
From sheer terror, beads of sweat rolled down his temples.
In a head-on fight, all of them combined were not enough for Soldier Boy to kill.
They had to use Novichok.
Now. Immediately.
At his shout, the dozen or so survivors finally snapped back to their senses.
