Chapter 17: Chapter 17: The Deep and Starlight Get Cursed Out
Evening.
The banquet hall in Vought Tower was brightly lit.
Ivory-white tablecloths covered the long tables, silverware was arranged in neat rows, and every dish had been personally prepared by a Michelin-starred chef.
Giant posters of The Seven hung on both sides of the walls. Homelander’s iconic smile looked especially dazzling beneath the lights.
Of course, Soldier Boy was there too.
The posters of Soldier Boy and Homelander were placed in the center, side by side.
However, Soldier Boy’s position had not been made public yet. The timing still was not right.
Annie January, codename "Starlight," stood at the entrance to the banquet hall in a custom golden Supersuit and took a deep breath.
A thin layer of sweat had formed on her palms. After all, this was the most important night of her life. freewebnovёl.ƈom
Starting tonight, she would no longer be Annie, the small-town girl. She would be Starlight of The Seven.
At the dinner, Starlight met many people and saw Soldier Boy in the banquet hall.
She froze for a moment.
Of course she recognized that face.
Anyone in America who had ever watched television knew that face.
Soldier Boy, America’s hero, one of Vought’s founding icons, the man who charged into a hail of bullets with a shield in black-and-white documentaries.
The history books said he had sacrificed himself, but this morning, he had returned to Vought.
There was no way Starlight would not be excited. This was not the original plot, where the original body had destroyed half a street in a stress reaction and killed quite a few people, making Starlight despise him.
Now, that stress reaction would not happen anymore. Benjamin was no longer the original body.
From halfway across the banquet hall, Benjamin looked at her and gave a slight nod.
Encouraged by her senior, Starlight grew even happier.
Deep stood beside Starlight, constantly waving to the audience below.
...
The dinner lasted two hours.
After the final dessert was cleared away, the guests left one after another, reporters packed up their equipment, and staff guided the fans out.
Deep, meanwhile, took Starlight to tour The Seven’s meeting room.
She followed Deep toward the elevator at the end of the corridor.
The meeting room door closed behind them.
Starlight looked around this legendary room where The Seven held their meetings.
...
When Deep asked Starlight whether there was a portrait of Homelander in her room, Starlight shook her head. She said her idol was actually Deep, and that she had been one of Deep’s schoolgirl fans.
Deep quickly laughed, but when Starlight turned back around, her face filled with horror.
The man she had admired, Deep, now wore a greasy smile. He had taken off his pants and was raising his eyebrows at her.
Starlight’s pupils shrank, and she immediately prepared to leave.
"What’s wrong? Didn’t you just say you were obsessed with me?" Deep spread his hands, looking confused.
But Starlight still tried to escape...
"Hey, hey. This is about how badly you want to join The Seven. I’m the second-in-command here..."
Just as Deep was smugly threatening her, there was a loud bang.
The door lock had been smashed apart by force. Broken pieces of the lock cylinder bounced twice on the carpet before rolling to Deep’s feet.
A figure in a dark green Supersuit stood in the doorway, shield hanging from his left arm. The face that never seemed to fade in those black-and-white documentaries now carried a mocking look.
"What a coincidence."
Benjamin said,
"I just happened to be passing by and heard someone calling himself the second-in-command of The Seven while getting ready to put his hands on a female rookie who just joined."
Deep’s hand was still on his waistband. His whole body froze, and the look on his face changed from sleazy to panicked.
He opened his mouth to explain, to say this was a tradition in The Seven, to say many people had gone through this before joining, to say it was just a joke.
But it was too late.
"What I fucking look down on most is using lowlife tricks like this to threaten a lady. You really are one pathetic fucking coward."
Benjamin cursed him out, then punched him square in the bridge of the nose.
A terrifying force struck in an instant, and Deep was sent flying.
At the same time, the sound of bones cracking mixed with Deep’s scream and exploded through the meeting room.
Deep clutched his bleeding nose, crashing into two chairs beside the long table before falling onto the carpet.
Benjamin walked over, planted his combat boot on Deep’s head, bent down, and lowered his voice until only the two of them could hear.
"Is this how it was with your precious fish? Did those fish say no either? Hm?"
Benjamin’s voice was as calm as if he were chatting about the weather.
"You think this is an aquarium? This is land, and land is under my authority."
Deep wailed in pain and convulsed on the floor. Blood poured down his face, staining his Supersuit red. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
Starlight stood in the corner, her fingers trembling.
She looked at Deep lying on the floor, at the man who had been trying to touch her just minutes ago now curled up on the carpet with blood all over his face, and a rush of satisfaction welled up inside her.
Someone like him deserved to be beaten.
"If your mother were standing in front of me, maybe I could let you watch how I humiliate her, so she could properly enjoy what you were planning to do to Starlight."
Starlight blinked. There was something about this man’s way of speaking that felt a little... intense?
"I’m sorry, sir. I was wrong... I really know I was wrong."
Deep begged,
"I really know I was wrong. Please spare my life."
Benjamin lifted his foot off Deep’s head and turned to look at Starlight.
Starlight was a little at a loss. She raised her head and looked at the man before her, the man who seemed to have stepped right out of a history textbook, and froze for a moment.
Soon, though, she said softly, "Thank you, sir."
"You’ve got a body full of superpowers, and you still let yourself get pushed around by a fish-fucking loser. You’re one cowardly fucking broad."
After cursing her out, Benjamin turned and walked out of the meeting room. He stopped at the door and glanced sideways at Deep, who was still curled up on the floor.
"From now on, a piece of trash like you is out of The Seven."
But when Deep heard those words, his face lost even more color than when that fist the size of a sandbag had smashed into his nose.
"No, don’t..."
Deep was full of regret.
Clearly, he had been the one getting bullied at first.
So why was it suddenly not okay when it was his turn to bully someone else?
Starlight, meanwhile, was still thinking about what Soldier Boy had just called her.
Broad?
Wait... she wasn’t not a broad, was she?
She opened her mouth, unsure what she was supposed to say.
