Chapter 460: Chapter 460: Rosalind Green Takes the First Step

Spotting the hog-slaughtering knife gleaming coldly on the table, Rosalind Green hesitated for only a moment before trying to lift it. But the blade was too heavy; she couldn’t move it at all.

With no other choice, Rosalind Green switched to a hatchet. This one was lighter. Gripping it tightly, her palms began to sweat. She peered through the crack in the door. It was pitch-black outside, and she couldn’t see a thing, but she could hear a noise—someone was trying to pry the door latch.

The familiar sound made Rosalind Green’s legs go weak. It had to be the local ruffians. They knew her son wasn’t home and wanted to take advantage of her. Rosalind mustered her courage and resisted the urge to call for Phoebe Huxley. Clutching the hatchet with both hands, she hid behind the door. ’If those bastards dare to come in, I’ll hack them to death.’

But Rosalind’s body was trembling, and her limbs grew weaker and weaker until she could barely hold the hatchet. It took all her strength to keep from screaming for Phoebe Huxley. ’I have to prove I can do this.’

’I won’t be a burden to my son anymore!’

"What are you doing?"

Old Master Tate’s sharp rebuke came from outside. He had woken to the sound of Dollar’s barking and came out to find two ruffians prying at the door, so he angrily shouted for them to stop.

"You old bastard, you got a death wish? Get lost!"

The ruffians paid the old man no mind. Tonight was a rare opportunity. That tough little punk was out of town, leaving only an old man at home. Rosalind Green was a prize they could finally claim—they had been lusting after her for years.

As for the Thorne family, the ruffians weren’t worried. They were just distant relatives. Once they had their way with her, they could just marry Rosalind Green if worst came to worst. They’d get a wife and become a stepfather for free. Where else could you find a deal that good?

"You animals!"

The old man roared and lunged at the ruffians, but they just shoved him to the ground. Hearing the old man’s groan, Rosalind was suddenly filled with a courage she didn’t know she possessed. She yanked the latch open. The ruffian who was prying at the door couldn’t stop his momentum and stumbled forward.

"I’ll kill you!"

Rosalind Green swung the hatchet wildly with her eyes shut. A few of her swings missed, but one of them struck flesh. She felt the impact and heard the ruffian’s bloodcurdling scream. Startled, she opened her eyes to see the man’s head covered in blood. Her blade had struck him on the forehead. ’Is he going to live?’ she thought, terrified.

CLANG.

The hatchet fell from Rosalind’s hand and clattered to the ground. ’I’ve killed someone. Will this get my son in trouble?’

’Will I have to go to prison?’

"Agh... I can’t see... The bitch played dirty!"

Blood gushed from the wounded ruffian’s head, streaming into his eyes. He thought he’d been blinded. The pain and fear instantly extinguished any lust he’d felt.

Old Master Tate was startled as well, thinking Rosalind had blinded the man. This was serious. The other ruffian checked the wound and found it was just a gash a few centimeters long on his brow bone. His eyes were fine; the wound just looked frightening.

Phoebe Huxley came out, brandishing the hog-slaughtering knife. When she saw the bloody ruffian on the ground, she assumed Old Master Tate had done it; it never even crossed her mind that it could have been Rosalind.

"What are you wailing for? You’re not going to die. All lust and no spine!"

Phoebe Huxley inspected the wound and relaxed. She grabbed a handful of wood ash from the stove and pressed it onto the cut, and the bleeding actually stopped. The two ruffians were scared witless at the sight of Phoebe Huxley. ’If we’d known this she-devil was here, we wouldn’t have come near this place even if you beat us to death.’

"Listen up and listen good. This family is my kin, so you’d better watch yourselves. If you ever dare to come back, I’ll chop you up and feed you to the dogs!"

Phoebe Huxley hefted the hog-slaughtering knife, its presence chilling. Dollar barked a few times, tongue lolling out as he stared at the two ruffians, his eyes gleaming with excitement. He looked like he was eagerly anticipating the meal Phoebe Huxley had just mentioned.
