Chapter 447: Chapter 447: My Idol is Boss Du
Frederick Thorne was skeptical. "Did Mr. Tate really say that?"
"He really did. He also said the times are about to change, and whoever seizes the opportunity will be a cut above the rest. In any case, I’m going to study with Mr. Tate. I want to be a cut above the rest." Jim Thorne took the opportunity to voice his ambition.
Having been to the big city and had his eyes opened, Jim Thorne was no longer satisfied with a life of just eating his fill of meat every day. He wanted to leave Millstone Peak, get into Aethelgard University, and then go see the foreign countries Old Master Tate talked about. Of course, he also had to earn a generous dowry for his sister. That was the most important thing of all.
Goldie Thorne couldn’t help but nod. "That’s just what the Old Master said. He also said that now is a time of... of stormy... stormy something or other..."
"A time of great upheaval!" Jim Thorne corrected, shooting his younger uncle a disdainful look.
’So uncultured.’
"Right, right, a time of great upheaval! The Old Master also said that troubled times create heroes, and that this is the best of times. As long as you seize the opportunity, you can definitely become an influential figure, just like Du Yuesheng back in the day."
Lately, Goldie Thorne had heard many stories about famous people from Mr. Tate, and the one he admired most was Boss Du. The man hadn’t had much schooling, no background, and no money, yet he went from being a humble pear vendor to a formidable kingpin who dominated an entire region. How incredible was that!
He wasn’t that ambitious himself. He just envied Du Yuesheng for having so many wives, every single one of them a beauty. It made him realize one simple truth—
’If you want a lot of wives, you need to make a lot of money.’
’Money is what gives a man his pride.’
Frederick Thorne glared at him in annoyance. "You? You think you can be like Du Yuesheng?" he said with disgust. "You should just keep your head down and do your work. Even Du Yuesheng started by working with his feet planted firmly on the ground. And you? You just loaf around all day. You’re twenty-five years old and you still don’t have your act together. What girl would ever agree to marry you?"
"How much can you even make from that kind of work? It’s not even enough to afford meat," Goldie Thorne grumbled defiantly.
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to work; he just didn’t want to do pointless labor.
Working himself to the bone in the fields every day and not even earning a single dollar for his efforts... Goldie Thorne was losing hope. He didn’t want to waste his youth and his time in a village with no future. He wanted to make big money.
SMACK!
Raina strode over and slapped him, cursing viciously, "If you don’t work, you won’t earn a single cent! Everyone in this village works every day. You’re the only lazy bum! Now that you’re back, you’re going to work tomorrow!"
"I have something important to do tomorrow."
Raina’s face turned ferocious, and she raised her hand to strike again. Goldie Thorne quickly dodged. "I really do have something important to do! I have to go catch that bitch Phoenix Golding in the act! I heard she started a new job, so she must be fooling around again."
"You’ve been trying to ’catch her’ for a whole month! I bet you were just messing around with your deadbeat friends. ’Catch her in the act,’ my ass!" The more Raina spoke, the angrier she became. She snatched up a feather duster and swatted him a few times.
’Wasting a month’s worth of work... What a disappointing, good-for-nothing brat.’
Goldie Thorne kept dodging, but while he could shield his head, he couldn’t protect the rest of his body. The spots where he was hit stung fiercely. It hurt like hell.
"How was I supposed to know that bitch’s affair would be like some kind of damn tunnel warfare? I can never pin her down! But I’ll definitely get her this time," Goldie Thorne cried, feigning injustice. In truth, Raina wasn’t entirely wrong. He had indeed spent that month hanging out with his deadbeat friends, but he hadn’t forgotten his mission to catch the adulterer. A man’s got to mix business with pleasure, right?
"Another whole month?" Raina barked.
"No, no! Half a month will be plenty."
"Half a month, my ass! You’re just trying to slack off again. I’ll beat you, you lazy bum!"
Raina started swatting him indiscriminately. Another half-month of work wasted! She saw no sincerity in her younger son whatsoever. He was clearly just trying to find an excuse to slack off.
"One week! Ouch... One week, that’s gotta be enough!"
Raina finally lowered the feather duster. "If you don’t have results in one week," she snarled, "I’ll break your damn legs!"
