Chapter 445: Chapter 445: Helping Phoebe Huxley Change
Although Phoebe Huxley looked down on Phoenix Golding, calling her a bitch every other word, she had to admit that Phoenix Golding was indeed beautiful—far more beautiful than her. It was no wonder Felix Thorne had been unable to forget the bitch.
Phoebe Huxley had liked Felix Thorne since she was a young woman, but she suffered from low self-esteem and never dared to confess her feelings. Later, when Felix Thorne and Phoenix Golding became passionately involved, Phoebe Huxley was even less inclined to reveal her heart.
But unexpectedly, things with Phoenix Golding fell through, and Byron Thorne approached her father to propose a marriage. At the time, her parents had disagreed. They felt that Felix Thorne’s feelings for their daughter weren’t genuine, since it had been less than half a year since his breakup with Phoenix Golding.
If Felix Thorne forgot Phoenix Golding so quickly, it would mean he was a fickle man, and their daughter would surely suffer if she married him.
But if Felix Thorne still had Phoenix Golding in his heart, then marrying him was even more out of the question. How could she live her life knowing her husband’s heart belonged to another woman?
But Phoebe Huxley was determined to marry him. She didn’t care if Felix Thorne’s heart belonged to another woman; she felt this was her only chance to marry him. Besides, she firmly believed that a heart could be won over with time.
She figured that as long as she treated Felix Thorne sincerely and bore him children, he surely couldn’t keep thinking about Phoenix Golding after so many years.
But the harsh reality left a thorn in Phoebe Huxley’s heart that she could never pull out. Although Felix Thorne never had an improper relationship with Phoenix Golding, his emotional affair was even more sickening to her. Fortunately, Felix had now seen Phoenix Golding’s true colors. Phoebe Huxley felt utterly refreshed, and the knot of resentment in her heart naturally disappeared. From now on, things would only get better and better.
With that resentment gone, Phoebe Huxley’s temper softened considerably. In the past, she would never have been so generous as to give away all the fabric her son had brought back.
Phoebe Huxley was well aware of the reasons. Lana Steiner was always buying things for her daughter and even helped look after her two sons who were studying in town, putting in more effort than she, their own mother, did. Her sister-in-law, Phoebe Thorne, wasn’t bad either. With Phoebe Thorne acting as a mediator, her relationship with her mother-in-law had improved significantly.
Furthermore, whenever Phoebe Thorne went to the town clinic for a check-up, she would bring back gifts—candy, pastries, or meat. People aren’t made of stone, and Phoebe Huxley was certainly not heartless. She was a classic case of someone with a sharp tongue but a soft heart, who responded to kindness, not coercion. If someone was good to her, she’d repay them tenfold. But if someone wronged her, she would pay them back twelvefold.
"Sister-in-law, you don’t do hard labor every day. Why not make a dress? I can make it for you," Phoebe Thorne said with a smile. Her sewing skills were quite good; she made all of her children’s clothes herself.
Phoebe Huxley grew a little embarrassed. She glanced down at her own thick waist and refused, "I’m so fat, I wouldn’t even be able to squeeze into it. It would just be a waste of fabric. You all go ahead. I really don’t need it."
Both Lana Steiner and Phoebe Thorne had wonderful figures—tall, slender, and graceful. In a dress, they looked like willows swaying in the wind. She, on the other hand, would look like a giant barrel wrapped in floral fabric. She didn’t even have to try it on to know it wouldn’t be pretty.
"We just need to cinch the waist a little. It won’t look bad, I promise. Trust me, Sister-in-law, it will definitely look good on you," Lana Steiner said in a soft, gentle voice. She knew how to design clothes herself. A small alteration to the neckline and waist, or the addition of a few small accessories, could create a completely different effect.
Phoebe Huxley had a sturdy build, but with a well-made dress, she could still look beautiful. ’What woman doesn’t wear dresses?’ Lana felt a pang of sympathy for Phoebe Huxley.
Felix Thorne was truly a responsible and dependable family man, but he wasn’t attentive or considerate. He would never think of buying Phoebe Huxley gifts. In that respect, he was a far cry from Frederick Thorne. Lana Steiner was grateful to Tang Xiao’nan, and she also felt sorry for Phoebe Huxley and wanted to help her.
