Chapter 439: Chapter 439: The Whole Family’s Sweetheart
Byron Thorne nodded. He agreed it probably wasn’t a big deal, but Felix and his wife, along with Raina, were in such a tizzy that he’d gotten swept up in their panic. Now that Phoebe Thorne had said her piece, he wasn’t so worried anymore.
"Let’s wait another two days. If he still isn’t back by then, we’ll send Frederick to Capria."
Byron Thorne made the final call, and the matter was settled. As everyone prepared for bed, Raina suddenly spoke, her voice laced with resentment, "When the third one gets back, I’m going to find a matchmaker and get him a fierce wife—one who will stay home and work obediently. If he ever tries to run off again, I’ll break his legs!"
Outside the door, Goldie Thorne shivered violently. ’My chest feels so tight,’ he thought. ’I can’t trust Mom’s taste at all. She’ll probably find me a wife just like my eldest sister-in-law. If that happens, I’d rather be a bachelor for the rest of my life!’
’I have to find my own wife, and she has to be a city girl. She must be beautiful, gentle, elegant, and poised. When I bring her back, she’ll completely outshine everyone in Millstone Peak. I’ll show all those people who laughed at me. It’s not that I, Goldie Thorne, can’t find a wife—it’s that my standards are too high. The girls on Millstone Peak just aren’t a match for me.’
Tang Xiaonan sighed, looking at the sneaky pair of uncle and nephew. ’If they keep dawdling, we might as well just sleep outside,’ she thought. ’On the road, these two acted all tough, but the second they get home, they turn into total cowards.’
"Grandma, Grandpa, I’m back!"
Tang Xiaonan shouted at the top of her lungs. Her feet were aching from standing, and she couldn’t be bothered with the two wimps anymore.
The uncle and nephew jumped in fright. They instinctively wanted to run, but Felix Thorne had already rushed out. With nowhere to go, they could only stand there meekly, their shoulders hunched.
Phoebe Huxley came out too. She froze for a second, then burst out laughing. She reached out to hug Tang Xiaonan, but she was a step too slow. Tang Xiaonan was already in Felix Thorne’s arms.
Felix Thorne hugged his daughter tightly, looking her over from head to toe. Seeing that Tang Xiaonan was perfectly fine—not hurt, and not a bit thinner—the heart that had been lodged in his throat for a week finally settled back into his chest. He smothered her with kisses, unable to get enough.
"That’s enough already! Give her to me!"
Phoebe Huxley was getting frantic off to the side; she wanted to hold her daughter too! But Felix Thorne completely ignored her, carrying Tang Xiaonan straight into the house. He shot a vicious glare at the cowering uncle and nephew, vowing to settle the score with them later.
Tang Xiaonan was immediately surrounded by the family, every one of them doting on her. After a week without their little treasure, everyone had been feeling listless. It was as if their food had no salt; nothing had any flavor.
As for Goldie Thorne and his nephew, no one paid them any mind. This suited them just fine. ’It would be best if everyone forgot they were even here.’
"You little rascal! Sneaking off to some faraway place and lying to your parents about going to Tristone! You’ve got some nerve, huh? What makes you so bold?"
Raina’s scolding came only after she’d smothered the girl in kisses. Then her expression hardened. ’This girl is too wild. She needs to be taught a proper lesson this time, or who knows what kind of trouble she’ll get into next.’
Tang Xiaonan just giggled and planted a kiss on Raina’s cheek. "Don’t be mad, Grandma," she coaxed. "From now on, I’ll tell you wherever I go."
Raina’s expression softened instantly, but she forced it to harden again. ’I can’t be fooled by this girl’s sweet talk,’ she told herself. ’I’m not a fool like Phoebe Huxley, who gets completely disarmed by a few nice words.’
"You’re not to go anywhere! You’re just a little girl, and you’re already thinking about running around out there? From now on, you’ll stay right here at home, you hear me? If you go out again, I’ll break your legs!"
Raina scolded her fiercely. It was pure luck that nothing had happened this time. ’She might not be so lucky in the future,’ she thought. ’I have to keep a tight rein on this brazen little girl.’
