Chapter 434: Chapter 434: Do You Think You Can Get In?
"Don’t ruin these clothes. Remember to bring them back after your sister is done with them," Adrian Hawthorne instructed.
"I’ll bring them back tomorrow. My sister just needs them tonight to trace the pattern, then she won’t need them anymore," Winston Lowell replied with a nod.
The three of them happily went home with the fabric. Winston Lowell and the chubby boy were walking with their arms around each other’s shoulders, good buddies once again. After they left, Goldie Thorne asked, "Where are we going to sell this?"
He, too, was eager to show what he could do.
"We’ll sell at the market. Tomorrow, we’ll take half the fabric back," Adrian Hawthorne said, having already planned it all out.
Jim Thorne grew anxious and blurted out, "What about me? Where do I get to sell?"
"Aren’t you supposed to be in school?" Goldie Thorne swatted at him.
Jim Thorne pointed at Adrian Hawthorne and said resentfully, "He’s not in school either."
Goldie Thorne was at a loss for words. He said irritably, "I’m not the one to stop you. It’s fine as long as your mom and dad agree."
Jim Thorne scratched the back of his head. He wasn’t confident, but he acted tough. "Mom and Dad will definitely agree. I’ll just follow Grandpa Tate’s example. At worst, I’ll just have to promise to pass my exams!"
"Third Brother, you made a bet with Mr. Hawthorne about getting into Aethelgard University. If you don’t get in, you have to do whatever he says," Tang Xiaonan reminded him. ’Just passing won’t be enough to get into Aethelgard University.’
Goldie Thorne stared at his nephew as if he were an idiot. "Have you lost your mind? Aethelgard University? Where did you get the nerve? The Thorne family hasn’t been blessed with that kind of luck yet!"
’To think he dared to make a bet with Adrian Hawthorne, and wasn’t afraid of losing the very shirt off his back! Goldie Thorne could see it clearly now—that Adrian kid was slyer than a fox and nothing like a twelve-year-old. He figured that on all of Millstone Peak, only his own sixth uncle could match the boy in wits. This bet was one his foolish nephew was bound to lose.’
Jim Thorne flew into a humiliated rage. "You’re so sure I can’t get in? I’ll get in just to prove you wrong! Besides, what makes you so sure *he* can get in? I won’t necessarily lose."
He shot a defiant glance at Adrian Hawthorne. ’Although he wasn’t confident about getting into Aethelgard University, he wasn’t panicking. Adrian Hawthorne had never been to a single day of school, so the chances of him failing were pretty high. If neither of them got in, then it wouldn’t count as his loss.’
"Mr. Hawthorne will definitely get in!"
Tang Xiaonan’s tone was firm. ’In the book, Adrian Hawthorne had gotten in.’
A hint of smugness appeared in Adrian Hawthorne’s eyes. ’Chubby Tang really had good judgment. That’s right—he was definitely going to get into Aethelgard University.’
’When he promised someone something, he would do it, even if it were harder than reaching for the heavens.’
Jim Thorne felt a pang of jealousy and couldn’t help but ask, "Xiaonan, do you think I can get in?"
Tang Xiaonan hesitated, not knowing how to answer. ’She was afraid the truth would hurt her third brother’s feelings and crush his motivation to study, but a lie would sound too fake. If it had been Vessaria Normal College, she would have answered that he could definitely get in without a moment’s hesitation.’
"Xiaonan, just say it!" Jim Thorne urged, feeling even more jealous.
’She had blurted it out for Hawthorne without a second thought, but when it came to him, she was taking forever to answer. What was his little sister trying to say?’
’Did she have no confidence in his abilities?’
"Third Brother, do you think you can get in?" Tang Xiaonan asked in return.
Jim Thorne was dumbfounded. ’How was he supposed to know?’
’And honestly, he really didn’t have much confidence in himself. After all, his best score so far was a two-digit number that started with a five, and he’d never once passed an exam.’
"I have to get in!"
Jim Thorne gritted his teeth and shouted, craning his neck stubbornly. ’A real man has to keep his word. Since I made the bet, I might as well give it my all! Who knows, maybe the Thorne family will finally get lucky for a change!’
"Then you’ll definitely get in, Third Brother. When the time comes, I’ll come visit you at Aethelgard University," Tang Xiaonan said with a sweet smile. ’As long as Jim had confidence in himself, a miracle just might happen.’
Jim Thorne’s eyes sparkled, his confidence bolstered. ’His little sister was like a divine child sent down from the heavens, with a blessed, golden tongue—whatever she said was bound to come true. In just seven more years, he’d be going to Aethelgard University!’
