Chapter 422: Chapter 422: Truly Amusing

The next day, Aston Marsh had other business to attend to. He recommended a few tourist spots and left Goldie Thorne to stay at the guest house. Adrian Hawthorne and Jim Thorne took Tang Xiaonan out to see the sights, bringing a camera along and taking plenty of pictures.

Tang Xiaonan wanted to wander around a bit more, but she got sleepy around noon. During lunch, she fell asleep on Jim Thorne’s back, so they returned to the guest house. There, they ran into Will, who had been sent to find them.

"The boss wants Xiaonan to come eat with him."

Will looked with a troubled expression at the chubby, loudly snoring girl. ’How is she supposed to eat like this?’

"Xiaonan’s asleep," Jim Thorne said, unwilling to let her go. He didn’t trust that bandit.

Adrian Hawthorne said tactfully, "How about I bring Xiaonan to see Madman tomorrow? It’s definitely not happening today."

"Alright. I’ll be back tomorrow at eleven sharp."

Will was agreeable and left on his bike. Jim Thorne complained, "Why do we have to send Xiaonan to that bandit? We’re leaving tomorrow. He won’t be able to find us then."

"So you don’t want to do business here anymore?"

Adrian Hawthorne retorted. ’If we offend Madman, we can forget about ever coming back to Capria. Besides,’ he thought, ’Madman seems to treat little Tang quite specially, inviting her to meals and buying her things. One meal isn’t a big deal.’

「The next day at noon」

Will arrived right on time, just as he’d promised. Adrian Hawthorne had intended to go along, but Will stopped him. "The boss only wants to eat with Xiaonan. He’ll send her right back when they’re finished. When are you all heading back?"

"Tomorrow morning. We’ve already bought our tickets," Adrian Hawthorne replied.

"I’ll have someone see you to the station tomorrow."

"Thank you, Uncle Will."

Adrian Hawthorne breathed a sigh of relief. ’Looks like Madman really does just want to have a meal with little Tang. She has been quite charming lately, so it’s not surprising she’s caught his eye.’

After lunch, Will, sure enough, brought Tang Xiaonan back. He also brought two cans of Coca-Cola.

"What’s this? Medicine?"

Jim Thorne only asked after Will had left. It was his first time seeing a can with a pull-tab. ’It’s bright red, and it’s a metal can... It doesn’t look like a malted milk tin, those are bigger than this!’

"It’s Coca-Cola. It’s like soda, the kind foreigners drink," Adrian Hawthorne replied, a nostalgic look in his eyes.

’He’d had it before, back when he was very little, but he couldn’t remember the taste anymore.’

"Soda’s great! Xiaonan, where’d you get this?" Jim Thorne grew excited. Soda was his favorite drink.

"The uncle gave it to me."

Tang Xiaonan picked up a can of Coke, handed it to Adrian Hawthorne, and pointed to the pull-tab. "Mr. Hawthorne, open it!"

Jim Thorne leaned in curiously. Hearing that it was time to open it, he snatched the can away. "Let me do it!"

But after fumbling with it for a good while, Jim Thorne still couldn’t figure out how to open it. Growing embarrassed, he muttered, "Maybe we should just pry it open with a knife."

Adrian Hawthorne said irritably, "You pull it open. Don’t you see this tab?"

’He remembered his father just pulling the tab, and it would open with a SSSST and start bubbling. But he’d never actually done it himself, so he wasn’t much more knowledgeable than Jim Thorne.’

Jim Thorne hooked his finger under the pull-tab, but instead of using a deft touch, he gave it a hard yank. It didn’t open. Gritting his teeth, he yanked again—and the tab snapped off!

Everyone stared, dumbfounded, at the broken tab in Jim Thorne’s hand, then back at the can of Coke. No one said a word. Jim Thorne gave a sheepish laugh. "Wow, this thing is flimsy. I barely even pulled on it and it snapped."

"Now that this is broken, how are we supposed to open it?" Goldie Thorne scratched his head. ’He wanted to try the foreign soda, too!’

Adrian Hawthorne took out his dagger; prying it open was the only option now. The three of them crowded around the can, tapping here and prying there, soon covered in sweat. Tang Xiaonan sat to the side, enjoying the spectacle. ’Getting this Coke open is more of a production than butchering a pig,’ she thought. ’It’s hilarious.’
