Chapter 412: Chapter 412: Biting Off More Than You Can Chew

Jim Thorne’s excitement vanished in an instant. He thought he had stumbled upon a huge business opportunity. Tang Xiaonan patted him on the head. "Jim, let’s not get sidetracked. Selling fabric is enough. Don’t bite off more than you can chew."

There was good money in fabric, and it was something everyone used. Even the poorest families had to buy it; after all, it wasn’t like they could go out naked.

Tang Xiaonan recalled a TV series she had watched in her past life called *The Great Dye Mill*. It was a classic business drama where the protagonist went from being a beggar to the owner of a large dyeing factory, handling orders worth hundreds of thousands of silver dollars. It might have been an exaggeration, but it illustrated the immense potential of the fabric business.

One of the protagonist’s lines, in particular, had stuck with her. The character, Sexton, played by the actor Yuri, was a regular at a certain restaurant. One time, the owner tried to comp his meal to thank him for years of patronage, but Sexton refused, saying—

"You people in the restaurant business don’t make that much. The moment my machines are running, they’re spitting out cash. I make way more than you do."

Tang Xiaonan couldn’t remember the exact words, but that was the gist of it. And that restaurant was the best in the entire city; it must have been making a fortune. Yet Sexton still scoffed at it, which was a testament to how profitable his dyeing factory was. The machines really did spit out money every single minute!

Back when she worked in foreign trade, Tang Xiaonan had mostly dealt with small commodities: socks, pearl accessories, cell phone charms, buttons, toothpicks, and the like. They were all small, everyday items with profits as low as fractions of a cent. But the business owners had relied on these meager profits to become billionaires. The bosses she’d interacted with were all undercover tycoons; they looked unassuming, but their assets were immense.

Adrian Hawthorne glanced at Tang Xiaonan in surprise. ’This chubby girl always says the most astonishing things. She’s wiser than many adults.’ He thought, ’Maybe that fall on the mountain really did get her blessed by some deity.’

"Selling fabric is more than enough. Don’t get distracted," Adrian Hawthorne added.

He and Old Master Tate had discussed it at length before settling on fabric. For the next five years, fabric would be their primary product. If he could become the largest fabric supplier in the southeast, the profits would be substantial.

Once he had accumulated more capital, he would consider other products, like various electrical appliances or even cars. The more high-end the product, the larger the profit margin, and the more money he would naturally make.

"We need to call Uncle Felix!"

Tang Xiaonan called out as they passed the post office. They had been gone for two days without making a single phone call. Felix Thorne and Phoebe Huxley must be worried sick.

But the post office was already closed.

"It’s fine. We can make the call from the guesthouse later. We’ll just have to pay for it," Adrian Hawthorne said, having come up with a solution.

They returned to the guesthouse first, where Goldie Thorne was waiting impatiently. If he hadn’t been worried about the two thousand yuan worth of goods, he would have gone out looking for them long ago. He finally relaxed when he saw that Tang Xiaonan was safe and sound. Seeing the pretty dress she was wearing, he couldn’t help but smile.

"That’s a pretty nice dress. Did you buy it, Kenneth?"

"No, the Madman bought it for her. And these, too."

Adrian Hawthorne held up his hands, which were full of several more items of clothing. Goldie Thorne chuckled. "So much stuff. That Madman is pretty generous."

"Have you two eaten yet? How did your business go?"

Aston Marsh’s booming voice preceded him. When he saw Tang Xiaonan dressed up like a little doll, he scooped her up adoringly. "Adorable! This is how little girls should dress!"

’It makes me want a daughter of my own,’ he thought. ’I’ll have to get to work on that when I get home.’

"Uncle Aston, did you check out the department store?" Adrian Hawthorne asked.
