Chapter 410: Chapter 410: Promise
"Alright, if you get in and I don’t, I’ll do whatever you say for the rest of my life," Adrian Hawthorne said with a smile.
"Nan, you heard that, didn’t you? You have to be our witness!"
Jim Thorne was gloating. ’This time, I’m sure I’ll win. Adrian Hawthorne has never attended a single day of school, but at least I’ve had a formal education. I’m definitely going to win.’
The corner of Nan Thorne’s mouth twitched. ’Her third brother is way too easy to provoke. I might as well let him lose the bet and take orders from the big boss from now on. Even though Adrian Hawthorne can be calculating, he’s very good to his own people. It wouldn’t be so bad for Jim to tag along with a guy like that.’
"Yep, I’ll be your witness, Third Brother. If you lose, you have to do what Mr. Hawthorne says."
"I’m not going to lose! He’s the one who’s going to lose and have to listen to me," Jim Thorne grumbled. ’Why does she just assume I’ll be the one to lose?’
Nan Thorne nodded. "Got it. Whoever loses has to do what the winner says. No backing out of the deal."
"I won’t go back on my word," Adrian Hawthorne said.
"I won’t either!"
Jim Thorne shot her an annoyed glare. He was a real man; he always kept his word.
"Third Brother, you’ll have to study really hard. Aethelgard University is incredibly difficult to get into. Grandpa Tate says it’s the best university in the entire country!" Nan Thorne couldn’t help but add a warning, explaining just how hard it was. ’The people who get in there are the best of the best.’
Jim Thorne blinked, his mind going a little fuzzy. ’The hardest to get into? What’s she talking about? I don’t get it.’
Adrian Hawthorne stifled a laugh and said, "Aethelgard University has the highest entrance exam score requirement in the whole country. Maybe one person out of every ten thousand makes it in. So, good luck!"
"Wait, hold on. Be more specific. Just how hard is it to get in?" Jim Thorne’s throat felt dry. His head was spinning even more now, and his heart began to race.
"Let me put it this way: in all of Vessaria, only one or two people get accepted each year. Some years, no one gets in at all. Get it now?"
When the college entrance exams were reinstated last year, Vessaria’s results were considered quite good, but even then, only one person got into Aethelgard University and one into Apex University. Some cities didn’t have a single person get into either.
Jim Thorne stood there, stunned, frozen like a wooden post. He was kicking himself. ’Is it too late to take back what I just said?’
’He couldn’t stand the thought of taking orders from that Hawthorne kid for the rest of his life. He wasn’t some puppy.’
"So, uh... if neither of us gets in, the bet’s off, right? Neither of us has to listen to anyone?" A sudden idea struck Jim Thorne. ’I probably can’t get in, but it’s not like Adrian Hawthorne is guaranteed to, either. What’s there to worry about?’ ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
Adrian Hawthorne nodded. "That’s right. If neither of us gets in, the bet is obviously off."
Jim Thorne broke into a wide grin, but before he could even enjoy it for a second, Nan Thorne piped up, "Mr. Hawthorne will definitely get in."
’I know exactly what my third brother is thinking. He’s banking on both of them failing. Hmph. I’ll just have to crush that hope for him right now.’
Jim Thorne’s face fell instantly. He shot an irritated glare at Nan Thorne. ’My own sister is always taking that Hawthorne kid’s side.’
Adrian Hawthorne just smiled and said earnestly, "I promised Grandpa Tate I would get into Aethelgard University. So, I will definitely get in."
It was his promise, and he would absolutely keep it.
’Nan Thorne suddenly understood. So that was why Adrian Hawthorne got accepted but never went to college. He was just doing it to fulfill his promise to Grandpa Tate. It was just a shame that by then, Grandpa Tate was already gone. But she was here now. Everyone’s fate was going to change.’
Jim Thorne’s expression soured even more. ’Are they deliberately trying to turn me into a lapdog?’
"What, does your family own Aethelgard University or something? You say you’ll get in, and that just makes it so?" Jim Thorne was still unconvinced. ’Only one or two people from all of Vessaria make it in. Is this Hawthorne kid really that good?’
