Chapter 369: Chapter 369: Shameless to the Extreme
Unfortunately, Xavier Village didn’t have a doctor. Villagers would come to their family for treatment when they were ill. For more serious cases, they’d go to the town clinic, but the Old Madam refused to go. She was afraid of the cost.
"Grandma, drink some water."
Clayton Xavier poured a cup of warm water. The Old Madam seemed a little more energetic after drinking it. She glared at the kneeling Storm Xavier, her eyes filled with disgust. Tang Xiaonan found it odd. That wasn’t how a mother should look at her son. No matter how much of a disappointment he was, a mother wouldn’t look at her own child like he was garbage. It should be more a look of frustration at his failure to live up to expectations.
"I’m the head of this family, after all. What’s the big deal about taking a few eggs?" Storm Xavier retorted stubbornly, convinced he had done nothing wrong.
The Old Madam sneered mockingly. "And who appointed you head of the family? I’m not dead yet. When did it become your turn to run this house? If you want eggs, go earn your own work points. And you have no right to criticize Clayton. The next time I hear you spouting that nonsense, I’ll break your damn legs!"
"COUGH, COUGH, COUGH, COUGH..."
The Old Madam was seized by another violent coughing fit. The water didn’t help; she simply couldn’t stop. Kneeling on the floor, Storm Xavier glanced up and saw his mother’s withered, frail body and her face, wrinkled like a dried tangerine peel. She looked like an oil lamp about to flicker out, posing no threat to him whatsoever.
’You fool, your mother’s so old she can’t even come downstairs anymore. What are you still afraid of?’
Phoenix Golding’s voice echoed in his ear. She had said this to him more than once, but the Old Madam’s intimidating presence, built up over decades, left Storm Xavier too scared to even think of rebelling. However, just as it takes more than one cold day for a river to freeze solid, thawing that fear couldn’t happen overnight. Phoenix’s constant repetition of those words, day after day, had slowly planted a seed of rebellion in Storm Xavier’s heart.
Seeing his mother’s weakness today, that seed suddenly sprouted. Storm Xavier straightened his back, shot to his feet, and shouted at the Old Madam, "How am I not the head of this family? A wife obeys her husband, and a widow obeys her son! Mom, you’re old and confused. From now on, I call the shots around here!"
After saying this, Storm Xavier’s back straightened even further. He felt a sense of invigorating clarity. ’I should have listened to Phoenix and rebelled against the Old Madam ages ago,’ he thought with regret. ’I’m the master of the Xavier family. All the best food in the house should be mine first. As for Clayton, he can stop his studies and go earn work points for me.’
"COUGH, COUGH, COUGH, COUGH..."
The Old Madam felt the air catch in her chest, and her coughing grew even more violent. Storm Xavier’s rebellion was completely unexpected. She had suppressed this son since he was a child, thinking she had thoroughly crushed his spirit. She never imagined he would dare to defy her today. ’That ungrateful beast!’
"Fine... So you think your wings have hardened, is that it? You... Get the hell out!"
"Why should I get out? This house is mine! I’m the master!" Storm Xavier bellowed, his neck stiff with defiance. His old man was abroad, which made him the man of the house. ’If anyone had to leave, it should be that ugly hag, Verna Golding.’
’As for the Old Madam and Clayton Xavier,’ he thought, ’I’m not completely heartless. I’ll let them stay. It’s not like the Old Madam eats much, and Clayton can earn work points now.’
Clayton Xavier glared furiously at Storm Xavier. His father had once again shown him a new depth of shamelessness. He was learning just how low a person could sink from the man right in front of him.
"What right do you have to yell at Grandma? You have no right to be the master of this house. You’re the one who should get out!"
Clayton Xavier stepped in front of the Old Madam and Verna Golding, shielding them. Veins bulged on his forehead and his eyes were bloodshot. He stood with his fists clenched, facing off against Storm Xavier. ƒrēewebnovel.com
"SLAP!"
Storm Xavier slapped him across the face, leaving a red handprint on Clayton Xavier’s fair skin.
