On his first day back at the Han residence, HuMing didn’t do much of anything. Although schools in the capital had already started their holidays, Han YunXi still had her final exams, which meant HuMing had the entire day to himself.

But he had no intention of simply staying at home. After all, it wasn’t often that he returned—he had to make this trip count.

He had already planned to sort through Second Grandpa’s belongings and bring them back to the Gu family.

Han ShuYi stared quietly at the young man before him. It was hard to believe that HuMing had been the one to personally send him here.

“You’re not the type to visit me out of kindness,” Han ShuYi said, leaning back in his chair, eyes calm. “You must want some kind of information.”

At that, HuMing let out a small laugh, as if he found the assumption amusing.

Han ShuYi had already been cast aside by Gu ZhaoChuan—did he really still think he had any value left?

“Han ShuYi, don’t overthink it. I just wanted to see how you’ve been. So? How’s the food in prison? I imagine it’s hard to adjust after living it up in the Han family.”

“HuMing, have you forgotten where I grew up?” Han ShuYi tapped his finger on the table, eyes locked onto HuMing’s. “I’ve eaten worse. This is nothing. But you—word is you’ve left the Han family. I assume you’ve found your real parents?”

HuMing rested his chin in his hand and stared back lazily.

The two locked eyes in silence for a brief moment.

Then Han ShuYi stood and pushed back his chair.

“Well, you’ve seen the state I’m in. You can leave now. I’m not a threat to you anymore.”

But just as Han ShuYi turned to go, HuMing spoke.

“Han ShuYi, there’s something I’ve never quite understood.”

“If you don’t understand it, then don’t,” Han ShuYi replied, stopping in his tracks. “Isn’t that what you told me once? That in this world, the winner takes all, and the loser becomes nothing? I got what I deserved.”

He remembered those words clearly. Back then, HuMing had told him that he was the protagonist of this world, and everyone else was just a stepping stone.

But in the end, HuMing had rewritten everything.

Han ShuYi no longer knew if any of what HuMing had said back then was true. All he knew now was that the rest of his life would be spent in this place.

“Don’t you want to see that person?” HuMing asked.

Han ShuYi wasn’t surprised. HuMing’s words echoed the same thought that had haunted him from the start. But oddly enough, hearing it now brought a strange sense of relief.

“So that’s it. You’re here because you want me to help you deal with him. But given my current situation, I’ll be here the rest of my life. And even if I could help, I don’t want to.”

Yet he didn’t leave.

He stood there, staring hard at HuMing, his expression unreadable.

Now that you know who the true culprit behind everything is, are you really going to just stand there and do nothing? Do you even believe that yourself?"

HuMing took a photo out of his pocket.

It was a picture of Gu ZhaoChuan.

“His name is Gu ZhaoChuan. First son of the Gu family in the capital. He and I are living under the same roof now. He’s the one who’s been pulling the strings, controlling your life from the shadows. But you should be glad—because he’s just like you. A puppet. And now, the puppet wants to cut his strings too. So, Han ShuYi, the path you take from here on out—that’s up to you.”

HuMing returned the photo to his pocket.

Han ShuYi sat back down.

Resting his arm on the chair, he met HuMing’s gaze.

What HuMing said… was tempting. The boy in the photo looked to be his age. And yet that same boy had manipulated him from behind the curtain, using him to strike at HuMing.

It was laughable, really.

Who were these people to control him?

And the most ridiculous part? According to HuMing, that guy was a puppet too.

“Son of a bitch,” Han ShuYi muttered, but there was a grin tugging at his lips. “To think I got played like a damn dog by some spoiled brat.”

“So, you’ve come around?”

“Don’t get cocky, HuMing,” Han ShuYi said sourly. “I’m not helping you. I just want revenge.”

HuMing didn’t argue.

He leaned in close and began speaking softly, outlining the plan to come.

Meanwhile, Han LiTian sat in his car outside the police station, eyes fixed on the entrance.

The butler had told him HuMing was here, so he came—but didn’t go inside. He simply waited.

He figured HuMing had his reasons for meeting Han ShuYi, and he didn’t plan to interfere.

Still, when it came to Han ShuYi, Han LiTian couldn’t help but feel a deep, heavy unease…
