On his first day back at the Han residence, HuMing didnāt do much of anything. Although schools in the capital had already started their holidays, Han YunXi still had her final exams, which meant HuMing had the entire day to himself.
But he had no intention of simply staying at home. After all, it wasnāt often that he returnedāhe had to make this trip count.
He had already planned to sort through Second Grandpaās belongings and bring them back to the Gu family.
Even though Grandpa never said anything out loud, HuMing was certain that he wanted to bring Second Grandpaās ashes home. The old man had been away for far too longāit was time for fallen leaves to return to their roots.
Having made up his mind, HuMing had already instructed Lan Jun to make the necessary arrangements.
After getting himself presentable, he headed out.
The sun was hidden behind clouds, and the summer heat had finally given way to the crispness of early autumn.
HuMing arrived at the visitation roomāsomeone he hadnāt seen in a long time was waiting there.
When that person finally stepped out and came into view, HuMing found himself momentarily surprised.
The guy before him wasnāt as gaunt as he had imagined. His eyes, beneath a shaved head, still held a sharp clarity that defied despair.
HuMing had assumed the guy had long since lost the will to liveādoomed to spend the rest of his life in this place.
āHan ShuYi. Long time no see.ā
Han ShuYi stared quietly at the young man before him. It was hard to believe that HuMing had been the one to personally send him here.
āYouāre not the type to visit me out of kindness,ā Han ShuYi said, leaning back in his chair, eyes calm. āYou must want some kind of information.ā
At that, HuMing let out a small laugh, as if he found the assumption amusing.
Han ShuYi had already been cast aside by Gu ZhaoChuanādid he really still think he had any value left?
āHan ShuYi, donāt overthink it. I just wanted to see how youāve been. So? Howās the food in prison? I imagine itās hard to adjust after living it up in the Han family.ā
āHuMing, have you forgotten where I grew up?ā Han ShuYi tapped his finger on the table, eyes locked onto HuMingās. āIāve eaten worse. This is nothing. But youāword is youāve left the Han family. I assume youāve found your real parents?ā
HuMing rested his chin in his hand and stared back lazily.
The two locked eyes in silence for a brief moment.
Then Han ShuYi stood and pushed back his chair.
āWell, youāve seen the state Iām in. You can leave now. Iām not a threat to you anymore.ā
But just as Han ShuYi turned to go, HuMing spoke.
āHan ShuYi, thereās something Iāve never quite understood.ā
āIf you donāt understand it, then donāt,ā Han ShuYi replied, stopping in his tracks. āIsnāt that what you told me once? That in this world, the winner takes all, and the loser becomes nothing? I got what I deserved.ā
He remembered those words clearly. Back then, HuMing had told him that he was the protagonist of this world, and everyone else was just a stepping stone.
But in the end, HuMing had rewritten everything.
Han ShuYi no longer knew if any of what HuMing had said back then was true. All he knew now was that the rest of his life would be spent in this place.
āDonāt you want to see that person?ā HuMing asked.
Han ShuYi stopped. Slowly, he turned to look back at him. freÄwÄbĪ·ovel.c૦m
HuMingās expression remained unreadable, like a deep, dark abyss.
He stood up too, meeting Han ShuYiās gazeānot with disdain this time, but as an equal.
āEven now, you donāt know who your real parents are. You thought you were the young master of the Han family, and yet you canāt even find them. Are you really going to give up just because of that?ā
Han ShuYi wasnāt surprised. HuMingās words echoed the same thought that had haunted him from the start. But oddly enough, hearing it now brought a strange sense of relief.
āSo thatās it. Youāre here because you want me to help you deal with him. But given my current situation, Iāll be here the rest of my life. And even if I could help, I donāt want to.ā
Yet he didnāt leave.
He stood there, staring hard at HuMing, his expression unreadable.
"He stood at the top and stripped you of the life that was originally yours. Han ShuYi, the hatred you felt toward me back then was far from simple. Now that you know who the true culprit behind everything is, are you really going to just stand there and do nothing? Do you even believe that yourself?"
HuMing took a photo out of his pocket.
It was a picture of Gu ZhaoChuan.
āHis name is Gu ZhaoChuan. First son of the Gu family in the capital. He and I are living under the same roof now. Heās the one whoās been pulling the strings, controlling your life from the shadows. But you should be gladābecause heās just like you. A puppet. And now, the puppet wants to cut his strings too. So, Han ShuYi, the path you take from here on outāthatās up to you.ā
HuMing returned the photo to his pocket.
Han ShuYi sat back down.
Resting his arm on the chair, he met HuMingās gaze.
What HuMing said⦠was tempting. The boy in the photo looked to be his age. And yet that same boy had manipulated him from behind the curtain, using him to strike at HuMing.
It was laughable, really.
Who were these people to control him?
And the most ridiculous part? According to HuMing, that guy was a puppet too.
āSon of a bitch,ā Han ShuYi muttered, but there was a grin tugging at his lips. āTo think I got played like a damn dog by some spoiled brat.ā
āSo, youāve come around?ā
āDonāt get cocky, HuMing,ā Han ShuYi said sourly. āIām not helping you. I just want revenge.ā
HuMing didnāt argue.
He leaned in close and began speaking softly, outlining the plan to come.
Meanwhile, Han LiTian sat in his car outside the police station, eyes fixed on the entrance.
The butler had told him HuMing was here, so he cameābut didnāt go inside. He simply waited.
He figured HuMing had his reasons for meeting Han ShuYi, and he didnāt plan to interfere.
Still, when it came to Han ShuYi, Han LiTian couldnāt help but feel a deep, heavy uneaseā¦
