Chapter 456: Chapter 456: All Good News
When Yi Roujing returned to her room, she saw two letters on the dressing table. Her family rarely wrote letters when sending things, usually opting for telegrams or phone calls if there was something important. These two letters were from Hu Heping and Wang Qiushuang.
Yi Roujing read Hu Heping’s letter first. It was the usual recounting of everyday life, and Yi Roujing read it with a smile. Every time Hu Heping wrote, she shared stories about her son, Xiaotuanzi. Perhaps all mothers are like this, so when Yi Roujing replied, she mostly talked about Baozi.
The end of the letter brightened Yi Roujing’s eyes and brought joy to her face. It turned out Hu Heping was pregnant, just confirmed, almost two months along. She hoped to have a daughter this time to complete the family and didn’t forget to urge Yi Roujing to have another child, saying her good looks should be passed down.
Yi Roujing made up her mind; she should change what she sends to Hu Heping to include items for expectant mothers and children.
After finishing Hu Heping’s letter, Yi Roujing happily opened Wang Qiushuang’s letter. Its contents were much simpler, detailing her and Niuniu’s recent situations, mentioning the challenges of returning to school. Due to a long leave, some courses were a bit tough to keep up with, but thankfully, her classmates were supportive, and someone lent her notes.
There was also an explanation about the remittance order. It was money she earned herself; she had previously written an article and sent it to a newspaper. Unexpectedly, she received a fee for it, and the remittance was her first manuscript payment, so it was meaningful to her, prompting her to send it to Yi Roujing.
Yi Roujing smiled knowingly at this part. As she thought, their hearts were already open to each other, and Wang Qiushuang, now raising a child alone, surely needed money. There was no way she would simply repay her money like this if not for the significance.
The end of Wang Qiushuang’s letter mentioned a classmate named Chang Zheng, who was very helpful and friendly. He was the one who lent the notes, helped her find a rental room, and arranged for her to live next door.
According to Wang Qiushuang, Chang Zheng was also divorced and had a daughter. Knowing she wanted someone to take care of her child while she attended classes, he introduced her to a nanny he found, whom she agreed to after some inquiries, as the nanny was reputed for childcare near the school.
Chang Zheng was able to hire the nanny partly due to familial connections. Wang Qiushuang was grateful to Chang Zheng, and when cooking, she would also include him and his daughter. She couldn’t afford to treat them to meals out.
One thing led to another, and unexpectedly, Chang Zheng proposed to marry Wang Qiushuang, startling her greatly.
Unsure of what to decide, Wang Qiushuang wrote to Yi Roujing, seeking her opinion.
Yi Roujing felt a bit pleased. Both friends’ letters turned out to bring good news today. Wang Qiushuang was still young, and remarrying was certainly necessary, but she should still investigate this Chang Zheng.
Yi Roujing shared Hu Heping’s happy news with Li Hongying and others and also mentioned Wang Qiushuang’s situation. Then she went straight out to the post office to call Wang Qiushuang and inquire about Chang Zheng’s situation, thinking it was good to do some investigation.
Hmm, asking Wang Qiushuang directly may not be the best. Yi Roujing paused and decided to head over to Baiqian Village. Wang Qiushuang had mentioned Chang Zheng was from Ning City in Jiang Province and a student at Jiang Province Normal College, so there should be some news to be found.
When Yi Roujing arrived at Baiqian Village, Xu Ancheng and Xu Zongyin were talking in the study. They never avoided Yi Roujing, and she could freely enter the study. Knowing she was there, they directly invited her in.
"Is there something you need?" Baozi was at Beiluo Lane, so Xu Ancheng deduced she must need something and asked directly.
"It’s not urgent. I just wanted to inquire about someone named Chang Zheng from Ning City, Jiang Province, a student at Jiang Province Normal College, and the same year as I was when the college entrance examination resumed," Yi Roujing said, a slight hint of embarrassment in her eyes.
"Related to Wang Qiushuang?" Xu Ancheng asked knowingly. "I’ll make a call to have someone look into it. Is this a background check for someone you’re considering as a match?"
Yi Roujing’s eyes brightened, "Mr. Xu, you’re really too smart."
Xu Zongyin watched the couple teasing each other, the corners of his mouth curving upwards more and more.
Xu Ancheng made the call directly from the study, reaching out to someone in Ning City’s police force, finishing the call after just a few words.
"Mr. Xu seems to know people everywhere," Yi Roujing admired.
"I got acquainted while still in Huaixi County, then he was transferred to Ning City," Xu Ancheng explained. "I’ll let you know when I find out anything."
"Mm-hmm." Yi Roujing nodded, "Dad, I’ll take my leave now, and let’s have lunch at Beiluo Lane."
"Okay, sure." Xu Zongyin nodded.
"Your wife is resilient and insightful," Xu Zongyin said, smiling at his son. He already knew about the situation in Dai City and hadn’t expected Yi Roujing and Ding Anmin to encounter such an ordeal. Fortunately, they weren’t harmed and even rescued many girls and children, bringing Chen Guangzhi to justice.
"Yeah." Xu Ancheng’s eyes were full of bright starlight mixed with a trace of heartache. "Her heart is too soft, always putting herself in dangerous situations for others."
"Dad, the people behind Chen Guangzhi shouldn’t be let off lightly," Xu Ancheng’s demeanor shifted, becoming deep and severe. Seeing this, Xu Zongyin was comforted and smiled.
"Rest assured, they won’t be let off. The Ni Family, Jiang Family, Hua Family, and Zhou Family have also gotten involved this time. Even if they survive, they’ll be stripped to their bones," Xu Zongyin thought of the things the Zheng Family had done over the years and could only sigh.
"The Zheng Family, in the pursuit of wealth, committed such heinous acts, not even as honorable as bandits. They should deal with outsiders but instead wreak havoc within their own country, truly not human," Xu Zongyin had always looked down on the Zheng Family despite its powerful connections. Their capabilities may be adequate, but their morals were lacking. In the past, there was no evidence, but now justice should exact the right toll from the Zheng Family.
In Jing City’s Huai West Lane, the residence of the Zheng Family, a grand four-courtyard house with five courtyards, formerly home to imperial relatives, Zheng Zhongyong resided in an east wing specially chosen by his mother for its warming winter and cooling summer, with good lighting, though currently, it was somewhat dim with all curtains drawn.
Upon closer inspection, every detail could be discerned. Zheng Zhongyong sat in a wooden wheelchair, a woman in a green dress lay prostrate before him on the floor, motionless as if unconscious. But in reality, she wasn’t unconscious; she had been knocked out by Zheng Zhongyong.
"Splash, crash," a basin of cold water was poured from head to toe, causing the figure on the ground to twitch, emitting a pained groan.
If Yi Roujing were here, she would recognize the person on the ground as Deng Yiyi.
"Curse-bringer, bitch, it’s all because of you, you caused all this." Zheng Zhongyong sat in his wheelchair, looking down at the drenched Deng Yiyi with bloodshot eyes and a contorted face, "Everything was going smoothly until you got involved. Since then, nothing has gone right, hahaha."
