Chapter 20: 44.5%

A shiver ran down Moon’s spine.

His hand raced to find his Liquid Mountain.

Ding!

[Fate Alert]

30% → 40%

Danger.

Real danger had just passed by his neck.

He couldn’t even see what was threatening him. He couldn’t follow his instincts, nor could his mind comprehend the situation.

"Little Moon." Unable to tell what was actually happening, Uon called.

He didn’t feel any danger, nor did he need to feel danger inside the facility.

Moon, on the other hand, by sheer instinct, rotated his body in a full 180 motion, facing the direction where the threat moved.

But what met him was not an enemy, not ghosts, not wind either.

Nor was it empty space.

But—

"WHERE DID THEY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

A soul-wrenching growl.

’What the hell am I facing now...’ His mind raced, ’Dying goblins sounded better.’

His mind tried to make any sense of the situation, but his thoughts couldn’t help comparing it to past events.

"Oh." As if he had now figured out the mystery of life, Uon let out an innocent sound.

’That giant bastard doesn’t have the slightest sense of danger?’ Moon questioned. ’Does he knew this screaming thing?’

He knew the guy was more than what met the eye, but his reactions left him puzzled. Was he faking it, or was that the new common sense he must understand inside this place?

"Lower that banshee scream of yours." A calm voice came from behind.

It was Teacher Samuel.

’Banshee what?’ Moon didn’t know what a banshee was, but that wasn’t important now.

His eyes darted to the status window.

The 40% was still there, unmoving.

"Teacher Samuel, did you see them, THESE BASTARDS!" another scream came, speeding in their direction.

"There’s nothing here," Teacher Samuel replied firmly, seemingly trying to reason with the approaching screams.

"But I did smell them, I am sure." The screaming source was getting closer after a slight pause. "Huh, who’s that kid?"

Out of nowhere, Moon found someone standing in front of him, a figure of similar height aimed directly at his face, wind blasting against his clothes.

For a moment, the skin on his face started flapping, but he tried to keep his eyes open... yet, that didn’t offer much resistance.

"A new ascender, obviously," Teacher Samuel answered.

"Teacher Rowa, how have you been?" Uon waved both his unreasonably long arms happily, welcoming her.

Irritated, "Shut up," she dismissed him aggressively.

Moon now could see it was a person, but that person was hooded with eyes producing faint light from the shadow of the hood that was obscuring the face and features.

She stepped closer to Moon, who still had his Liquid Mountain unsheathed, aimed at her.

She walked around, getting closer.

Sniff.

Sniff.

Sniffffffffffffffffff. freewebnøvel.com

Moon, unable to comprehend the situation, was frozen in place.

’Is this the mating season of her species?’ He wondered.

She pulled her face away from him, her eyes squinted unevenly, looking even more horrefic.

"You!" a slender finger with long nail was aimed at Moon’s face..

"How did you come at this time?" she asked.

He was prepared for this.

Everything had time to fall into place.

"I lost track of time inside the trial. Not sure how much time passed, but I think I took longer than I should have inside."

"How many goblins did you face?"

"15."

"Did you face other monsters?"

"Yes."

"What kind?"

"Swamp wolves."

"How many?"

"6."

"How big were the trial grounds?"

A new question he didn’t prepare for, but that didn’t hinder him.

"Around twice the size of this area," he answered, pointing with his chin to the large platform they were standing on... his mind raced to make sense, produce logical answers, and keep up with her.

He knew what she was aiming for and knew he must answer fast.

"What day did your trial start?"

"I do not know."

"What day is today?"

"I do not know."

"Where did you come from?"

"First floor."

Ding.

"Where did you live?"

"Mountains of Gru."

Ding.

He could tell, something was off.

But he didn’t look at the window.

His eyes were wide open, in direct contact with hers.

His raised blade was slowly lowering, but his grip was tightening further.

"Where are they located?"

"Far south."

"What did you do before ascending?"

"Gate suppression mercenary."

"Your name?"

"Moon."

"Family?"

"Dead."

Moon was starting to loosen his grip.

He was being forced into a corner, driven mad, asked questions he had never dared to ask himself.

Teacher Samuel didn’t interrupt; he stood still watching.

Uon involuntarily started taking steps backward, unable to bear the brewing tension.

Moon was on his own.

He wasn’t sure if he should attack.

But his instincts assured him—

He was only alive because this crazy woman hadn’t attacked him yet. free𝑤ebnovel.com

It was because of her decision not to attack.

He wanted to lash out, to question her back.

But he was also sure that if he did, it would be the moment everything fell apart.

The clean state of his... it was still fragile.

He was weak.

Even his name was only a single day old.

He wasn’t certain about anything.

Living as a free man, not a slave, was new to him, and he was unsure what should be done, what action should be taken.

Was there even a way to defend himself?

"When?"

The questions didn’t stop.

The luxury of thinking didn’t exist for him.

"Before I can remember their names or faces."

"Where did you get these clothes?" she asked.

This time, he paused.

Unsure how to react.

They were trial rewards.

But he didn’t know how the rewards system worked.... nor the exact pattern.

Would saying they were from Gru give him away?

Would saying they were trial rewards expose him?

Which was worse?
