Chapter 72: Chapter 72 Take Me Instead

Hugo’s POV

The words cut through the air like a blade, freezing us all in place.

"Touch her again and I’ll put a bullet through her skull without hesitation. Her life ends here and now if you keep this up."

His threat turned our blood to ice.

The bastard must have seen how we’d gone completely still, because his cruel laughter echoed around us.

"Look at that. Three mighty alphas brought to their knees by one little wolf." His voice dripped with satisfaction. "I’ve spent years dreaming of capturing a grey wolf. Never imagined she’d walk straight into my hands."

My hands balled into fists, rage burning through my veins.

"Then you three show up, all desperate to find her. The moment I saw her, I knew she was extraordinary."

I caught the others stealing glances at me, then at each other. The tension between us was thick enough to cut.

"Makes me curious which one of you is smitten with the girl."

His words dragged us back to those heated arguments that had nearly destroyed our friendship.

"Step up like a real man and admit your feelings, and I might let you mate with her before she dies."

The second those words left his mouth, my jaw clenched so hard I thought my teeth might crack. Derek and Parker were staring daggers at the old man’s hideout too.

None of us could deny it anymore. We were all obsessed with her, each probably more desperately than the others.

The memory hit me like a punch to the gut.

"She means everything to me," Parker had growled, watching Derek rifle through her belongings.

We’d gone to her place early that day, planning to surprise her for her birthday. That’s when Derek started his usual snooping routine. ƒгeewebnovёl.com

He’d always been like that, unable to resist digging into every corner of her life.

Then he’d found her diary again, the same one he’d stolen before and read to us like it was some kind of joke.

Now he was at it again, violating her privacy without a second thought.

"Time to see what she’s written about us lately."

Derek’s eyes had lit up with that familiar hunger for her secrets.

She kept little entries about her daily thoughts, and up until then, they’d all been sweet. She genuinely cared about us, that much was clear. But when Derek cracked it open that time, something was different.

His expression changed instantly. He’d struck gold.

"Holy shit, she’s got it bad for us!" Derek had shouted, shoving the diary in my face like a trophy.

My smile died on my lips.

Parker looked thrilled at the possibility that she might want him, but my heart was shattering into pieces.

Because I’d wanted to be her only choice.

All those hours we’d spent together, I’d convinced myself she felt something special for me alone. Finding out I was sharing that space with my best friends felt like betrayal.

"Hand it over," I’d demanded, reaching for the diary.

But those two idiots just kept laughing, tossing it back and forth like children playing keep-away.

I wasn’t about to lower myself to their level, wrestling over it like we were still teenagers. They’d already read most of it anyway.

"Get over yourself. We agreed that if she chose one of us, the others would step aside. Now she’s chosen all of us, and you’re acting like she’s your property." Parker had planted his hands on his hips, defiant.

The memory faded as Derek’s voice cut through my thoughts.

"You really think you can just hold us here with threats against her life and call it a day?"

Derek was screaming at the old man now, his control finally snapping.

"Not quite. I’ll have my work finished by then."

Those words made us all exchange looks of pure terror.

Everyone knew about his sick experiments.

What the hell was he doing to Bella?

"Touch one hair on her head and I’ll rip you apart piece by piece!" The words tore from my throat before I could stop them.

My friends stared at me in shock, probably hearing the desperation in my voice.

"Think I’m afraid of death, boy? I’ve already got what I came for. Dying afterwards doesn’t scare me one bit."

Ice flooded my veins at his words.

Then it happened. A scream pierced the air, raw and agonized.

Bella’s scream.
