Chapter 34: Chapter 34 Ice Cold Recovery
Bella’s POV
Ever since everything fell apart, I had thrown myself deeper into understanding my condition. The medical files spread across my makeshift desk demanded every ounce of concentration I could muster.
My phone buzzed again. The caller ID showed another attempt from Camilla. I let it ring out, just like the previous five calls. Whatever she wanted to discuss could wait. Right now, nothing mattered more than finding answers about what was happening to me and my children.
The television blared from the living area, accompanied by enthusiastic singing and the occasional crash of toys hitting the floor. My heart went out to whoever would have to clean up after us, but the kids needed this normalcy. They deserved to act like children, even while our world crumbled around us.
"Leah, could you please turn that down?" I called over my shoulder, hoping to steal a few minutes of quiet to review the latest test results.
I had positioned my workspace by the floor-to-ceiling windows, where natural light streamed in and the city sprawled endlessly below. Under different circumstances, this suite would have felt like a luxury vacation. Instead, it served as our temporary fortress while I fought to understand the nightmare consuming our lives.
The noise level dropped slightly, and I managed to focus on the medical terminology that still felt foreign on my tongue. Each page brought more questions than answers, but I refused to give up.
"Mommy."
Tara’s voice cut through my concentration. Something in her tone made my spine straighten immediately. I turned to find her standing in the doorway, her small frame rigid with worry.
"What is it, sweetheart?" I asked, already pushing back from the desk.
"Something’s really wrong with Leah."
The pen tumbled from my fingers before her words fully registered. The way she hunched her shoulders, the tremor in her voice – every maternal instinct I possessed screamed danger.
I abandoned my chair and rushed past Tara into the living room. What I saw there stopped my heart completely.
Leah lay motionless on the couch, her tiny body locked in an unnatural position. Her eyes had rolled back until only white showed, and her muscles seemed frozen in place.
"Leah!" The cry tore from my throat as I dropped beside her, grabbing her rigid hand between mine. "Baby, can you hear me? Please wake up!"
I pressed my palm against her forehead, willing warmth and life back into her still form. Nothing I did seemed to reach her. She remained trapped in whatever was happening inside her small body.
"Oh God," I whispered, turning desperately toward my other children.
Zack and Tara stood huddled together, tears streaming down their faces as they watched their sister’s frightening stillness.
"Mommy, is Leah going to die?" Zack’s voice cracked with terror.
"No, baby. She’s going to be fine," I said, though panic clawed at my chest. "Zack, I need you to get my phone right now."
Instead of obeying, he shook his head vigorously. freewebnøvel.coɱ
"There’s no time for phone calls. I know exactly where Uncle Hugo is staying," he declared, already moving toward the door.
"Zack, absolutely not!" I shouted, but he was beyond listening.
He swiped the keycard with practiced efficiency, something that would have impressed me under normal circumstances. Now it only terrified me more.
"Zack, come back here this instant!" I called after him as he and Tara disappeared into the hallway.
I started to follow them, then stopped abruptly. I couldn’t leave Leah alone, not like this. My heart felt like it might explode from the impossible choice between protecting one child and chasing the others.
Before I could decide what to do, small footsteps echoed in the hallway. Zack and Tara burst back through the door, followed immediately by Hugo, who was still fastening the buttons on his hastily thrown-on shirt.
"What happened?" he asked, dropping to his knees beside the couch without hesitation.
"I found her like this a few minutes ago," I managed between gasping breaths and tears. "She won’t respond to anything I do."
Hugo gently patted Leah’s cheek, speaking softly to her unresponsive form. His calm demeanor helped steady my racing pulse slightly.
"We need to call an ambulance," I said, starting to stand again.
"The hospital won’t know how to help her," Hugo said firmly, still focused on Leah. "I’ve seen this happen to other affected children. Traditional medicine doesn’t understand what we’re dealing with."
"Then what am I supposed to do? Just watch my daughter suffer?" I cried, feeling utterly helpless.
He glanced meaningfully at Zack and Tara, reminding me that my panic was frightening them even more.
"Bring me cold water and ice," he instructed calmly.
I rushed to the mini refrigerator, grabbing everything cold I could find. Hugo began rubbing ice cubes along the back of Leah’s hands while I worked on her feet. Zack and Tara wanted to help too, their small fingers red from the cold as they gently massaged their sister’s arms.
Gradually, miraculously, Leah’s rigid muscles began to relax. Her breathing deepened, her eyes slowly returned to normal, and the terrible stillness left her body.
I collapsed in relief, overwhelmed by the magnitude of what had just happened. The fear, the helplessness, the desperate love for my children – it all crashed over me at once.
"She’s okay now," Hugo said gently, his hand finding my elbow and drawing me closer.
I found myself leaning against his chest, my face buried in my hands as I sobbed. For those few minutes, our complicated history didn’t matter. Only the shared relief that Leah was safe.
When I finally lifted my head, our eyes met. He had been watching me with an expression I couldn’t quite read. I pulled away quickly, wiping my tears and trying to regain some composure.
"Mommy, is Leah really okay?" Tara asked, squeezing between us and wrapping her arms around my waist.
I cupped her worried face and managed a small smile.
"She’s going to be fine," I whispered, praying I was right.
Hugo turned his attention to Zack, extending his hand with a gentle smile.
"Are you alright, buddy?"
Zack hesitated for a moment, then slowly placed his small hand in Hugo’s larger one. The trust in that simple gesture made my chest tighten with emotion I wasn’t ready to examine.
