Chapter 30: Chapter 30
Riley’s POV
"You can’t leave with her, Ethan, until we say so."
Gunnar’s voice cuts through the room like a command, low and sharp and I turn so fast my neck almost hurts. I blink at him, then at Ethan, my heart slamming hard against my ribs.
"What?" I snap, anger flaring instantly. "And why can’t we leave? You were the ones who brought me here against my will, with your threats, your intimidation, your ridiculous contracts. You don’t get to decide now when I go when my husband is here"
Ethan stiffens beside me, his hand tightening around mine. "She’s right," he says, forcing confidence into his voice. "We’re done here."
Gunnar’s lips curl slowly, not in amusement, not in anger either, but in a colder aura.
"Relax," Cane says smoothly, stepping forward just enough to block the door. "We’ll play it fair and square."
Caden nods. "If Ethan wins, he leaves with you immediately. No arguments. No conditions."
My chest tightens. "And if he doesn’t?" I ask, already hating the answer.
Gunnar’s eyes lock onto mine. "Then you stay here. Until whenever we decide otherwise."
"That’s not fair," I shoot back. "That’s kidnapping."
"No," Gunnar replies calmly. "That’s a challenge we’re offering your husband"
Ethan scoffs. "A challenge? You think I’d agree to that?"
"You don’t have to," Caden says, tilting his head. "But if you walk away now, you walk away alone."
I feel Ethan hesitate, just for a second, and that second scares me more than anything else.
"What kind of game?" I demand. "What twisted thing are you planning now?"
Cane glances at his brothers before answering, like this has already been decided long before I ever walked into this place.
"A Trial of Binding," he says. "Old law."
My stomach drops. "Explain."
Gunnar steps closer, his presence heavy, commanding. "It’s simple. A test of will and truth. The game reads intent, loyalty, and strength. Not muscles," he adds, looking directly at Ethan, "but the kind that doesn’t lie."
Ethan frowns. "Sounds like bullshit."
"You’ll stand inside a marked circle," Caden continues, ignoring him. "You’ll each be bound to a sigil stone. The stones react to truth. They glow when you speak what you truly mean and burn when you lie or waver."
My breath catches. "Burn?"
"Enough to tell," Cane says evenly. "Not enough to kill."
I shake my head. "This is insane. Ethan, don’t do this."
He looks at me then, really looks at me, and nods once. "I’m not leaving you."
My heart twists painfully. "You don’t have to prove anything to them."
"I do," he says quietly. "I have to prove it to you."
Before I can argue again, Gunnar gestures something with his hands and the room shifts.
I don’t know how else to describe it. One moment we’re standing in that familiar chamber, and the next, the floor beneath us glows faintly, symbols appearing like they were always there, just waiting to be seen.
A circle forms. Three stones rise from the ground, dark and smooth, pulsing softly.
"Step in," Gunnar orders.
Ethan hesitates only a second before stepping forward. I try to follow, but Cane blocks me gently, his hand firm against my arm.
"You watch only," he says.
My hands curl into fists as Ethan steps into the circle. The stones light up one by one.
"Speak your truth," Gunnar says. "Why do you want her?"
Ethan swallows. "She’s my wife. I love her."
One of the stones burns faintly.
Oh no, this is not real right!
"And why did you hurt her?" Caden asks.
Ethan stiffens. "I—"
The stone flares hot red, and he gasps, dropping to one knee as pain flashes across his face.
"Answer," Gunnar commands.
"I was angry," Ethan pants. "I was scared of losing her to you people."
The glow dims, but it doesn’t disappear.
The stone flickers hot again.
My heart is pounding so loudly I can barely hear anything else.
Ethan cries out, collapsing fully this time, clutching his arm as the light sears.
"That’s enough," Cane says.
And just immediately the circle fades.
Gunnar doesn’t look surprised. Not even a little.
"It’s decided," he says.
"No," I shout, rushing forward. "No, this is crazy. Ethan, get up."
But before I can reach him, hands grab me from behind.
Strong and firm.. it’s Caden and Cane.
"Let go of me," I scream, kicking and struggling as they lift me off the ground. "Ethan!"
He looks up at me, panic flooding his face. "I’m sorry Riley" ƒrēewebnovel.com
Gunnar turns his back on him."We’re done here."
They carry me toward the door as I thrash wildly, my voice hoarse from screaming, my heart shattering with every step.
"This isn’t fair," I sob.
As we move down the corridor, I don’t stop fighting until Gunnar suddenly stops walking.
He turns sharply, his face dark with irritation.
"Do you think we want you Riley Grayson?" he snaps. "Do you think if it were left to us that we’d choose Ethan’s supposed wife when there are far more beautiful, pure, innocent women out there who would beg for us without hesitation?"
My breath stutters.
"Cooperate," he continues coldly, "or we do this the hard way."
Then he turns and walks off.
My heart sinks so deep it feels like it disappears entirely.
Caden and Cane say nothing as they carry me up a wide staircase, the air growing cooler with every step. We pass through long passages lined with tall arches and heavy doors, everything strange, everything unfamiliar, until they finally stop in front of one room.
The door opens and they toss me inside.
I stumble, barely catching myself before falling flat on my face. When I look up, my breath catches.
The room is stunning, glowing softly with warm light, and standing near the center is a woman.
She’s beautiful in a way that feels unreal. Calm. Powerful and completely ethereal.
Caden speaks first. "Pacifa, get her dressed and ready."
Then they leave. The door closes behind them with a solid thud.
Pacifa bows slightly, then straightens and smirks.
"For the Alphas to personally bring you to me instead of the ladies-in-waiting," she says slowly, "means you’re important."
She looks me up and down, eyes sharp.
"Who are you?"
I look away, swallowing hard. What am I supposed to say?
I don’t even know where the hell I am.
Before I can answer, she grabs my arm and pulls me up with shocking ease.
"Hey," I protest, startled by her strength. "What are you doing?"
She drags me across the room toward a massive bathtub carved into the floor, steam already rising from it.
"You’re being prepared," she replies casually. freeweɓnovel.cѳm
"For what?" I demand.
She turns to look at me, her smirk widening."For a wedding."
My heart slams painfully against my chest."A wedding?" I whisper.
She nods, completely unfazed."Yes," she says.
"Who’s wedding and what business do I have with the wedding?"
She meets my eyes, her gaze steady and knowing.
"You’re getting married today," she continues calmly. "To the Alphas."
